  1. AdelphosHume scored this whisky 83 points Expert Senior

A great representation of an older style of single malts, with its very subtle peat and bold, slightly challenging, complexity. Without water, the malt quietly lingers on the palate for a long time. A bit of water sweetens the nose and palate, and makes the notes more distinguishable.
    • Nose
A touch of sea salt, dried fruit (raisins, apricots, and pineapple) and oak, malt and citrus peel, nutmeg and freshly cracked pepper, honeysuckle, vanilla and caramel, sweet cream and fresh strawberries and blackberries, and an earthy leaf-litter note.
    • Taste
Malt and sweet citrus, baking spices, oak and char, smoked dried fruit, smokey caramel, and a touch of peat, ginger, and licorice.
    • Finish
Dark chocolate and smoked almonds, smoke-infused malt, a hint of smoked preserved meat and dried fruits, a flash of basil, and oak tannins.

Interesting whisky from one of the oldest distilleries in Scotland. Sweet maltiness, cereality, honey, caramel, orange zest, dried peaches and apricots, slightly minerality in the background, cashew, oak. Strong ginger spiciness - 48% ABV. Bodied, intense and complex. Lovely long sweet and warming aftertaste with earthy character. I highly recommend, very goof quality for that price.

Color: ocher, medium dark. From a sample bottled by Vita Dulcis.

An excellent whisky with no particular character, with the exception of 48% is easily confused with its Glen-cousins (speaking of "entry level").

Mental Image: Wheat ears dipped in honey and caramel.
    • Nose
      82 82
Oranges, dried fruit, and a floral touch. Honey and vanilla. Caramel. Inviting.
    • Taste

Classic highlander with soft and sweet scents. Drink easy, good alcohol content, honey and vanilla, red apple and orange blossom. Average quality of the distillate.
    • Finish
      84 84
Medium. The 48% degrees are well integrated, a very slight initial spiciness, with notes of walnuts and barley malt, a fresh herbaceous comma, continues well and in harmony. The finish is slightly salty.

Great stuff, not at all lost to those Distillery's whose prices have been hyped.
I heard that Garioch means "smile", indeed, when I drink such a great core range whisky, I really smile happily :)

The taste score is 86 points, and the price does not affect the score.
    • Nose
The bottle I have in hand seems to be leaning more towards Sherry.
Very sweet dark berry flavour with honey, toffee, oak, some creamy biscuits, very good nose.
    • Taste
48% of the abv did its job, and the heavy body caused a very strong impact on the taste buds. The nose spreads evenly on the tongue, adding caramel, dried fruit, pepper.
    • Finish
Compared to the excellent performance of the nose and taste, this part of the performance is not so outstanding, but I still really like this bottle of Glen garioch 12yo which is very affordable.

    Nose

French nougat, milk chocolate, butter biscuits, forest honey, subtle umami (glutamate) plums, plums seasoned with a few herbs from Provence, very subtle smoke.

The taste reflects the nose very well, nice and strong and full.

Unfortunately, it weakens a bit on the finish. It is rather short to medium-long at most with honey, nougat and dark chocolate.

Simply a very fine Everyday Dram. Value for money just great!

  13. Don Cassi scored this whisky 83 points Expert Senior

it definitely needs time to breathe, so let it sit for now, the longer the better...

then a relatively classic profile reveals itself with a nice combination of typical virtues of bourbon and sherry casks: preserved fruit, stew, dried apricots and underneath a nice vanilla note. Slightly dusty behind. The alcohol content is perfectly chosen and carries the aromas.
    Length: 5/10

A small, overlooked gem when compared to many modern and artificially sherry-charged standards. However, it also needs some time to develop its potential.

    Rating: B+

Confidently solid whisky with notes of tropical fruits and much less sherry notes.
    T:21 N:21 F:22 B:21
    • Nose
Burnt grass, lollipops, steppe herbs, caramel, vanilla, malt, burnt husks, fruit bomb of fresh and dried garden fruits, minerality, traces of tropical fruits, light acetone varnish tones and cardboard
    • Taste
Bittersweet, tannic, fruit candies, husk burnt, burnt sugar, fruits and dried fruits, lemon sourness, ginger, citrus zest, vanilla, pineapple/
The air reveals more saturation and tannins, but not woody.
    • Finish
      Tannins, oak, cask, fruity sweetness.

As someone who has not had access to lots of "old style" whisky, a bottle like this with a reputation for representing that older style, whatever that is exactly, is very interesting to experience. I have had a couple of bottles of this over the past years I feel I can now review the liquid with some precision. It does indeed convey a classic sherry profile, but not soaked in red fruits and sugar. You do get some notes, especially in the taste that are reminiscent of 15 or even 18 years in a good cask. A great malty sherried speysider, at good strength, not chill filtered, but likely coloured, so not full marks. Very good value for money in the big 100cl bottles I have had the fortune of obtaining at less than 45€ - and at that price its a no brainer.
    • Nose
      87 87
Bready malt meets red fruits right away. Slight ripe banana, cereal, brown sugar. Some warm spices and oak sap, and even some lemon zest freshly peeled.
    • Taste
      86 86
Lemon juice, strawberries, red berries in general. Malty sweet bread, 65% chocolate, drying on the oak. Raisins, walnuts, tobacco leaf, coffee beans. Interesting aging flavours, but a little busy.
    • Finish
      85 85
Sultanas mingle with lemon juice and cereal. Drying oak turn to white cracked pepper. Medium length.

The NAS Highland Tradition of the 90s was my 3rd or 4th Bottle I had in my collection those Days. Since those Days Glen Garioch is always on my Sympathy List, and I like many of the New Bottlings and love the 70s peaty Bottlings.

This 12yo Standard release comes with 48% and delivers a great, balanced Mix of Barleysugar, Maltiness, Oak and some fruity moments inbetween (almost in the Nose). A Standard that shows with its 35€ that not everything in the Whisky World went Nuts.

Wet moldy cellar notes (I find this quite often in young sherried whiskies), red fruit, plum, vanilla - the mix of Sherry and Bourbon casks shows. Very typical and straight forward so far. Then it gets a bit spicy on curry powder and white pepper. The alcohol comes through - there's a bit of clear all-purpose glue (Uhu-Kleber for German-speaking readers), but it's decently integrated.
From time to time a certain sweetness shows up - some kind of sugary syrup, maybe maple or sugar beet (as someone else suggested)?
I don't really find smoke on the nose.
    • Taste
      80 80
Red cherries at first. Then it becomes quite bitter, with nice tobacco notes, a bit of leather, soft smoke, pepper - for me this evokes faint memories of an old library, but it isn't totally immersive. Probably because no one really smokes tobacco in libraries and the other notes aren't that fitting either.
The bitterness is a bit harsh at times and disrupts the overall experience.

I have tasted this over multiple sessions. In later ones I also found salty pebble stones on the palate, as well as a peculiar sweet and earthy vegetable note... Carrots? That's a first.
    • Finish
      78 78
The bitter tobacco stays for a while, the smoke and some mineral salty notes are still present as the taste fades away. Not totally unpleasant, but the finish isn't great.

      Comments:

At the price I got it (34.99€) this is a fine Highland whisky. Certainly not a manufactured 'new style' Scotch. I found quite a few interesting notes, but overall the bitterness (and I'm certainly not opposed to these notes) doesn't work out great in this one. Props to Glen Garioch for bottling at 48%, I'm always happy to see OBs at 46% and above :)

The sherry influence tends to vary from batch to batch. My first bottle was noticeably more bourbon-based, while the 1-liter-travel-retail bottling I have going right now is pretty "dark" in character.
    • Nose
      86 86
Acidic / tart / mineralic in character. Lime zest, sour fruit gums, hay, chalk, gravel, wet pebbles. An austere style that may scare off the uninitiated. Well sherried, a lot of cask influence, pretty spicy. Pretty complex for a 12-year-old OB.
    • Taste
      87 87
Intense, the strength works wonders at 48%. Great mix of tart fruit notes (lime, redcurrant), floral impressions (elderberry, lilac), and minerality.
    • Finish

Still on the tart/sour side. A bit uneventful, with oak galore.

it starts quite vigorously with fruit and fruits, seasoned with a bit of herbaceous peat smoke, which is noticeable but quite subtle, apricots, pear, dried fruit, nutmeg, a little lemon, vanilla, butterscotch, all combined well and with 48% it also has sufficient strength

This is a great starter malt for the beginning of a tasting. If you're looking for a fresh starter or a light dram.
    • Nose
      84 84
Fruit driven distillate. Light and fruity, hints of bitterness and a rough herbal note. Fresh and zesty, alcohol prickles all over but it keeps the malt sweetness up. There's almost a dill note like very good ry, and also some more farmy/forest floor notes.
    • Taste
      81 81
Sharp, oak and spice dominate the start, herbal notes follow, almost a touch of camphor. The heat comes up quick and follows with sweets. There's some very old school notes in here, wet dog and dry leaves. Almost a hint of peat, but comes off a little more earthy and a touch of sourness.
    • Finish
      82 82
Bitter oak and vanilla comes up in the finish. Very bright, more of the herbal camphor/bay leaf note and some damp oak, vegetal notes.

    • Nose
Fruity and herbaceous opening. Butterscotch, ripe apricot, clove and leather. A very appealing profile. Oak is spuerbar, but at the same time floral and pleasantly sweet. The alcohol cools the nose and provides a strong note that does not bother. In the background forest floor and earthiness.
    • Taste
Creamy-pleasant, initially slightly peppery-earthy, then again sweet and floral with apricot, orange, syrup. At the same time herbs and oak, leather and carnation.

Great nose, strong and pleasant mouthfeel, for me a somewhat one-sided bitter finish.

    • Nose
      From a blind tasting.

In fact "light", but nicely varied: malt, some honey sweetness, fresh citrus notes, vanilla, with (herbal? -) seasoning. By the time I think of dark fruits - raisins and plums - to find.
    • Taste
Oha, at the beginning almost spicy and peppery on the tongue. The longer it is in the mouth, the more the fruity notes come through: now orange, a little raisin, honey, a hint of cough drops.

Nose: incredibly strong and full. Much malt, wet hay and honey. Red overripe apples, slightly sparkling alcohol (so a Gärnote), pepper, a little curry (very spicy whisky), vanilla, lemon tea towels and a touch of sherry sweetness. He has a lot to offer but is a little too strong and spicy. Water makes it milder but robs a lot of flavors variety. Unfortunately, the "balance" is not quite right here.

Taste: intense strong onset, malt, lemon and orange peel, grass and heather herbs, sweet and peppery at the same time, on the finish again very malty with neat honey sweetness and a slightly bitter oak in the background. Medium-length finish. Also really nice for his age but can not quite keep up with his nose. With water it loses a lot of body tension and aroma. The 48% have certainly not been chosen for no reason.

Ouhja, he still can. The more% than other standards do him very well, make him look grown up. The mixture of fruit, pungency and dryness are exactly what I like, I also discover unlike some nothing juvenile / metallic here. A certain sweetness at the back rounds off nicely, great thing, PLV unbelievable.

Delicious! Warming, with some depth. A pleasure for the time of the onset of autumn.
    • Nose
Strong and spicy in the scent. Malt, heather, a potpourri of spices, all Glen Garioch, all there. Strong oak notes & oranges marinated in alcohol complete the whole thing. Some water puts spicy oak in the foreground and adds a seductive chocolate touch. Add a little sherry and a touch of new leather.
    • Taste
At the beginning velvety soft, but the appearance is deceptive ... soon the 48% pack up and clean up in the mouth. They create space for strong oak notes with a few soft sounds of malt, heather and pepper. Water softens the oak enormously & adds notes of honey to the heather. Over time, sweetened oranges and a mix of preserved berries hit the palate.
    • Finish
A good spice of spices, a pinch of pepper & a hint of tannins complete the palate experience. If water was added at the beginning, a soothing sweetness is spreading that seems to increase. The berries and oranges stand well for the passage of mild white pepper.

The nose is intense and somewhat heavy. Full and spicy. Dark fruits abound: Plums, figs maybe some forest berries, some rising bread in the background. After a few minutes the fruit disappears and I get much more substantial aromas. Some game stock and cured bacon from a backwoods butchery. This nose is a meal! Could I order a side of curly fries?…back to work! Tastes sweet and spicy. There is a zippy and quite peppery oak but that remains pleasant. Dried apricots and seaweed. There’s something to try! In the background there is a trace of strong Ethiopian coffee. The finish is medium long and getting dryer. I like this heavy nose a lot, too bad the palate doesn’t deliver. Still, very solid uncommercial style and very nice strength for a standard bottling…

As with other Glen Gariochs, I also find the finish here best. The taste is a bit too alcoholic and unbalanced to me.
    • Nose
light sherry; sweet, red apple; a little bit of chocolate; with raisins; a minimal menthol note from the alcohol; with some time come rye, barley and malt; Add to this the typical Glen Garioch touch, which I find to be metallic and mineral (but not distracting)
    • Taste
at first slightly bitter; then floral notes are added; a decent tingle is on the tongue; a bit too sprightly; the second sip makes it a bit chocolatier with a little sherry and raisins; the alcohol stays very clear
    • Finish
medium; spicy and slightly mineral; a little salt and pepper; on the palate, chocolate and raisins are left behind; At the end, the oak presses briefly again

    Tasting Notes by Glen Garioch;

Nose - The colour of sharp honey, on the nose heathery floral notes are balanced with the richness of poached pears and the sweetness of malted barley.Palete - Crème brûlée and sweet ripe banana at first, then comes a light oakiness with pear fruitiness, leading to a long smooth, creamy and fragrant finish.Cask: Bourbon and Sherry

    Glen Garioch and cheese..
What is Parmigiano - ReggianoAlso known in as Parmesan, is a hard, granular cheese, named after the producing areas near Parma, Reggio Emilia, Modena and Bologna. It is made from raw cow's milk.Cheese pairing
The first thing you notice about a long aged Parmigiano is the texture – small tyrosine crystals, giving you the crunch in the mouth. The whisky is the complete opposite, providing a unique contrast. The 12 year old initially binds the dryness of the cheese, whilst the cheese provides a platform for the sweet fruitiness of the malt and enhances the clean barley notes. The cheese continues to glitter under the surface of the malt, offering jabs of refreshing saltiness to the finish. If you can't get Parmigiano - ReggianoTry another hard Italian cheese.

The 48% are not noticeable. With water, the whisky loses very quickly to substance and is boring, without water, however, a quite interesting Malt.
    • Nose
Sweet malty notes followed by herbs.
Light bourbon note, maple syrup, light citrus note, honey.
      Very nice fruity nose.
      Oak flavors are also present.
The second glass: There is also something very fruity, any wine gum with artificial fruit note. Raspberries (?) I think I smell a hint of smoke.

      fresh plum (mirabelle?)
      liquorice
Oak Lemon peel (with white portion) light beer taste (yeast)

N: Something of an old dry forest on a warm spring day. Woody, yeasty, dusty, and some fruity malt coupled with floral notes.  Its a bit muddled but lots here.
T: Spicy, malty, earthy, sweet and oily with a sherry note.
F: Powdered milk chocolate with a touch of salt and chilli/peppery spices surprisingly emerging with the cocoa powder. A hint of fruits add to the creamy, malty lingering finish

    • Nose
Undiluted, unfortunately, a little alcoholic pungent. Behind it, soft smoke and sweet caramel. A fine trace of honey. A little fruit (pear, but already a little more mature).

With a few drops of water it opens up unbelievably: an intense vanilla sweetness comes out of the glass. In addition, fresh and floral notes of fresh hay.
    • Taste
Undiluted a strong onset on the tongue, unfortunately also slightly alcoholic. Intense nutty aroma, with a little sweet malt. In the background a little banana, also more mature (already with brown spots), like the pear in the nose.

After dilution, the alcoholic sharpness disappears, but the onset remains powerful. Here, too, comes the fresh note of hay and the malt is a little more intense. In addition a gentle pineapple sweets.
    • Finish
Medium long, rather dry. With malt and a little smoke. Again, the ripe bananas from the taste.

gooseberries, but als osome crème brulée and a clear hint of smoke. This

    • Taste

toffee. Good body. Sweet malt and again that old edge that I cannot put my

A unique Highland character resulting from the distillate in 2 parts to ripen, the first period in American bourbon casks followed by a period in Spanish sherry casks. Both barrels give some unique characteristics with the whisky. Bourbon whisky makes the softer and the sherry gives him more depth.
