This is the best highland park I ever had. Wow, I’m in love. If you like the Glendronach 18yo or 21yo and other better single cask editions from Glendronach, if you like Macallan exceptional single cask series, if you like grate Glenmorangies… you will surely love this excellent Highland Park Whisky from Tara Shop in Munich from the very first sip. This is exceptional stuff! Truly amazing. Thank you Tara for the excellent recommendation. Great pick!

This 2007, 12-year-old Highland Park single cask was matured in a 1st fill European sherry hogshead and bottled at a massive 65.3%.

I was quite skeptical at first because of the very high ABV, however, my skepticism was blown away quickly. Even without water, this HP is not alcohol-driven on the nose at all. It comprises thick and fat sherry notes of figs, dry plums, roasted coffee and some chocolate. With some water it opens up a lot more and becomes more fruity with hints of orange zest and mirabelle.

Unsurprisingly, the whisky arrives on the palate very powerfully and I had a feeling that water would probably help. And it did - a lot! This malt can take water perfectly and it profits a lot from some drops of water. Like this, the Highland Park can reveal its very oily and thick texture with lots of roasted coffee, orange jaffa cakes, spicy cinnamon, some ginger and hints of heather. There is also some very light smoke (which becomes more prominent if you add some more water). This is fun!

The finish left me with lingering roasting flavours and notes of wet tobacco leaves, paired with some sweet chocolate.

This was my second Tara Whisk(e)y Shop exclusive this year (after a wonderful Springbank, which we reviewed earlier this year) and I honestly have to say that I am probably going to buy the next shop exclusives blindly - very good cask selection!
