The Arran Entry Level - NAS, Bourbon Cask, 43%vol, White Wine Color. But at least natural color. There is nothing on the label for chill filtering, at 43% vol. but it can be assumed.

    • Nose
On the nose it offers what such a whisky can offer - light fruits, apple, pear, some fruit acid, some malt sweetness. And the young, immature impressions of rough, hard pear skin.
    • Taste
He reflects that on the tongue, a little thin fruit juice, a few herbs, youthful bitterness. The bitterness disturbs a little and takes away the aroma from the fruit. These are unripe fruits with a lot of hard, bitter skin and a few apple or pear stalks from which you can chew a light woody note.
    • Finish
The aftertaste is bitter marzipan, no bitter almonds, more apricot kernel. But there is also some wood.

The fresh island character that is stated in the notes doesn't really make sense to me. The freshness is rather immature youth and bitterness. It's quite ok for a young whisky but has nothing to offer for an experienced whisky drinker. But it doesn't hurt either. It's young whisky made from American Oak.

Quite decent for an entry level, budget friendly malt. Enjoyable and approachable with very little complexity, and that herbaceous touch prevents this from becoming completely generic and forgettable. A nice and easy (and I do mean nice) sipper which may not excite many people, but is unpretentious and doesn’t pretend to be something that it’s not. If you like the Tomatin Legacy, you’ll find this Arran Barrel Reserve to be a decent alternative.

Crisp, bright and friendly. Honey, sugar and a soft flower - herbaceous note of geraniums and parsley. This gives way to a shy grassy – hay note which adds a bit of depth, preventing things from turning into a syrupy, liquid candy.
    • Taste
      79 79
Gentle wood and a soft prickle. Dry and medium-full mouthfeel. Overall considerably less sweetness compared to the nose, but rather there’s a creamy, porridge like grainy element which shows the youth. In the back those garden-herbal notes hum a quiet, subtle tune.
    • Finish

      Rather short, herbaceous and dry.

Arran Barrel Reserve, 43% alc. Original bottling (2021). Expansion: Bourbon casks (first fill, barrels)

Nose: First of all, slightly tart and bitter aromas, various kitchen herbs and hops. After that, the whisky opens up slowly and classic fruit aromas emerge. Crunchy pears, some woody apples, malt and a delicate note of vanilla. In the background a baking sheet with Christmas cookies, fresh from the oven.
Palate: Slightly sour fruit, lively, not only the color is reminiscent of a light white wine. Lime, tart apples and especially apple seeds, caramel, grapefruit, bitter oak tannins. Again a little malt and vanilla, a very delicate cinnamon aroma. It sounds complex, but it isn't, the aromas are tightly and harmoniously interwoven.

Finish: Medium long, continues on its way calmly. Dried apples, milk chocolate and caramel, very light pepper.

Conclusion: Harmoniously fruity, simple, easy to enjoy. This arran is intended to introduce the entry into the core range, this bottling is probably also basically suitable for entering the world of whisky. 82/100 points (2022)
