A nice representative of the "12CS" family. If the funk gets to overwhelming, then I recommend a trip to the fridge. There is definitely some cheese to go with it.

    Incredible: Subtle. Effervescent. Alluring.
Lovely citrus vanilla pastry finds salt and pepper astringent smoke.

The aroma is subdued, sweet. Citrus, vanilla, berry pie, dusty dried fruits, coniferous theme.
Waste motor oil, light minerality, spicy spices. After prolonged aeration, notes of peat appeared.
The taste is bright, rich, sweet. Citrus fruits, lots of ripe fruits and spicy spices, custard, vanilla, dark berries, juicy apricot, motor oil.
The aftertaste is long, sweet with bitterness. Vanilla, zest, dark chocolate, dried fruit, some tobacco and pepper.

Sample from a club member. Great whisky, but I prefer the tart fruitiness of the 10! Actually the 15 as well... The outstanding facets of this were for me: the sulphury and caramelised effects on the nose, the salty palate and floral finish.
    • Nose
      88 88
As expected, a bit closed on the nose at cask strength, with medium alcohol prickle. Sweeter and less tart than the 10 - looks like more sherry influence. Still pineapple, a bit of gooseberry. Sweet vanilla, sultanas and dried apricots, phenolic herbs (wild thyme). With water opens up to a lot of honey, honeysuckle, marzipan, sweet orange, sea breeze. Sulphury spirit (rather than contaminated casks), nice fat and caramelised as well.
    • Taste
      87 87
Salty, spice, peat, fruits. A whirlwind of flavour, definitely needs water. Pear, apricot, orange peel, sweet-pea flowers, honeysuckle. Black pepper, cardamom and ginger. Thyme and honey.
    • Finish
      88 88
Long. Ahh, very interesting. Fairly peaty and floral-herbal with heather and thyme. Fruity as well with apricot, pear, peach, gooseberries. Orange and lemon peels with dry malt biscuits.

salty caramel and hints of blackberries. Something "dirty" that I know (and love) about a jumper.

Again a delicious Springbank 12 CS
    • Nose
Immediately very fresh with a pile of citrus and other light fruits, with a bit of muff behind it. Earthy, vanilla, malty, buttery with light billows of smoke. Over time, this muff will prevail.
    • Taste
Not a little alcohol. The earthy muff is right in the foreground. Here, too, the smoke is discreet. Then again citrus freshness, a little honey, malt, caramel. Alternating sweetness and acidity paired with the earthy muff. Like.

    Numbers aren't compulsory.
    • Nose
Golden yellow with a faint green tinge.

Subtle peat on the nose with just a whisper of smoke; gentle, complex, earthy, herby, vegetal. Apricot kernels, grainy, mineral warehouse or toolshed, grubby, earth or dust and oil; a fantastic nose. Honeycomb, both dried and cooked apricot, mealy, mash. Later gaining malt biscuits and oak cakes, and a hint of airfix glue; salted lemons and the ozone smell of crashing ocean waves.
    • Taste
A tingly, zingy palate showing a little more peat than the nose; herby, mealy, motor oil, wood resin, mineral, whitewash on concrete walls, dusty, steel, grease, redolent of a workshop or warehouse. Gentle alcohol, no astringency; one is reluctant to add even 3 drops of water. A fresh attack, peppercorns both white and pink as well as apricot, dried mango, and a hint of caramel. Sweetness at first but gradually emerging saline, smoky-salt notes.
    • Finish
A long, even, lingering finish. A wonderful whisky; sheer quality and great individuality.

Light smoke, band-aid medicinal smoke, a surprising amount of brine, then lanolin, perfumed jelly beans, vanilla, toffee, marzipan. A very vague sulphur note also. Honeysuckle, herbs. Not bad, but also not great. Definitely not what I expected.
    • Taste
      90 90
Oooh, on the palate it's much better. Alcohol has some bite, but it's fine, then comes nice juicy sweetness, cane sugar and mango juice, candy cane, cereals, lot of barley, malt sugar, very light smoke, just a touch of oaky bitterness. Second chew immediately brings that sulphur note, but it's really light and almost tasty. In spite of the strength, this is actually a pleaser, though a bit on the sweet side for me. Candy sweetness with jelly beans and candy cane, luckily there's a bit of smoke also. Almost prune sweetness coming out here. Third chew is really warm, full, and delicious. It's creamy, even, now with notes of chocolate milk and cream, along with very ripe pear or pear juice. Very nice.

There is a carmel corn thing going on here. Very sweet when compared with the usual batches, at least before 2020. There is also Karo syrup on the nose. I'm trying to figure out what sort of casks were used. There is an almost sacharine sweetness that is unusual for Springbanks of any sort. A strong putty note. Mechanic's shop industrial notes. Vaseline. Watermelon Starburst (artificially flavored). Teak wood oil. Oak saw dust. Gunny sack (Hessian cloth). A somewhat atypical Springer on the nose.

Palate has more classic Springbank notes. A bit like the Local Barley series. A very rich malt this time. Is it local? Rock salt candy. And Burl "33" Ives singing Big Rock Candy Mountain. Dry straw. Knife blade oil. Exterior wood stain (Sikkens). Old lady's house (an old house in 1974 with an old lady living there who is about 85 years old and has been living there for ages, with just a touch of dry rot attic wood in summer time heat, along with Russian tea cakes on the kitchen table that were baked in the oven within the past few hours). Playdoh on the tongue as the vanishing death note. (Yes, I tasted that stuff as a lad many times; it was a touch salty, but with cheap salt, not good high quality salt).

What happens after the whisky is gone? The tongue is juicy and watery. No astringent bitterness as with some of the older Springbank 12's. Rather, a kind of putty-like salty mouth feeling with a touch of the scent of Vaseline. Kind of a raw (holiday sugar cookie) dough thing too.

"Orange Peel Li Er Xing Er". It is indeed a little oxidizing, even a little nut and rice wine? But what is true is that there is a handful of spices in front of me: probably aniseed, bay leaf, cinnamon, mashed anise. Oil wax, lemon essential oil, orange juice, millet spicy, micro meat, peat should be considered medium in 12cs, anyway, bourbon dominated. 89
    • Taste
      88 88
Slightly spicy. But the balance is still good, and the structure is probably a bit simpler. Stop talking about soup, supa sweet! Honey, honeydew melon, ginger sugar, heavy caramelized meat, light yellow wine, light grapefruit peel vinegar, light orange wine, fennel, fleshy, balanced spicy. The wine is lighter and thinner, with a medium-greasy feel, and slightly astringent. The overall performance is good, probably due to the oxidation of the sample, which tends to be fruity. b90-p86
    • Finish
      87 87
It has a strong sense of spiciness, but you don't need to be picky about it. Compared with grapefruit peel, orange fruit, slightly astringent, scorched, comfortable to close, and full of citrus. 87

Finish: medium long to long. oaky bitter, spicy. Could be more complex.

    Rich, well-balanced, complex and satisfying!

This is pretty good to enjoy straight up. However, I personally recommend pouring a second dram and slowly sipping this Springbank over the course of 3 – 5 minutes to really uncover each layer. Let the whisky breathe a little for at least 3 minutes and the alcohol burn gets down to a more manageable level. This lets you get at the more nuanced “teriyaki sauce” flavours I was talking about.

Well-crafted, well balanced and a robustly-flavoured dram that serves as a great introduction to the unique slight motor oil-evocative flavours of Campbeltown

    • Nose
In the glass, a burnished gold colour similar to pancake syrup.

On the nose, a surprisingly intense and colourful bouquet that does not overwhelm the nose. The bouquet opens with a rich and strong maltiness reminiscent of McVitie’s digestive biscuits and vanilla spongecake. It develops into sweeter notes of honey, caramel and a tinge of orange peel. Malt and vanilla really takes the centre stage, with fresh orchard fruits playing a more secondary role. There is a minor component of sherried notes of raisins and preserved sour plum. The nose profile readily comes across even when the glass is held an inch away from the nose.

Slight malt biscuit muskiness and a tinge of spice builds up mid-way through nosing. This is accompanied by mild smokiness (of the sort you get from parma ham) and a very light but distinctive smell of motoroil from a petrol station.

Adding several drops of water causes the maltiness to subside, and somewhat brings the notes of raisins and plum into the foreground.
    • Taste
On the palate, a moderately-rich texture with some oiliness coupled with substantial maltiness. Again, notes of digestive biscuits, some honey, and some banana topped with ice cream. This develops into mildly sweet raisins, figs and preserved sour plum. There is some brininess and minerality that cuts through the sweet fruits and maltiness in an even and balanced way, and the saltiness lingers on the tongue for a decent duration. Slight drying sensation on the back of the throat.

On a second and smaller sip, I begin to somehow detect… a BBQ teriyaki sauce note? Sweetness and saltiness is combined and captured in a rich runny texture- add to that equation a component of mild smokiness and some heat - voila! Chargrilled BBQ teriyaki chicken with some burnt ends!
    • Finish
Moving on to the finish that is long with some warming spice and some refreshing spearmint. There is also a strange but pleasant mixture of lingering umami soy-sauce – similar to Brand’s Chicken Essence, and a fading motoroil aroma.

Intruged yet? You may wonder how notes of motor oil and saltiness can create a good whisky. Yet, for decades Springbank remains one of the most sought-after whiskies in whiskyland. Grab a dram to find out why!

Tasting notes based on a 2cl sample from the "Springbank New and Forthcoming Releases - Virtual Tasting 2021" tasting pack. This sample convinced me to buy a 70cl bottle on release, which I look forward to revisiting in the future to see if my initial enthusiasm persists.

Peppery notes, sweet honeycomb, pastry. Nuts: macadamia, walnut. Sea air, salt, wet rocks, soil. After some time, a savoury note appears, like cured meat. Some slightly floral notes emerge in the background.

The quality is still very high. Slightly fewer sherry portions in 2021 than in 2020, but almost 70 percent surcharge (€ 65 - € 110). No go!

Fruity, custard, caramel on the nose. More reminiscent of a first fill bourbon cask than a mixture with sherry. Little salt, little dirt. Pretty clean for a jumping bench. Dirtier with water ;-) Also sweet, white chocolate in the mouth. I would call it a beginner's bottling for the Cask Strength Springbank range. Nice and round, not too strenuous, but also not outstanding.

It's been a while since I had a 12 CS, I believe it was batch 18. It started a little brash on the nose, so I let it rest for an hour before nosing. At first I didn't get that distinctive Springbank note, but it delivered on the palate. Again a very good batch where I without a doubt would like a full bottle of!

    Based on a sample.
    • Nose
Opens up very mineral and fruit driven. Sour apple, raspberry, pear, orange marmalade, sultana, salted caramel, honey, cacao dusting, soot and a little note of pickle. Not that funky and typical yet, but it's good so far.
    • Taste
This is where the fun(k) begins and it brings an immediate smile on my face. Faint smoke and peat, salty sea air, something farmy unique to Springbank, apricot, cranberry, sour cherry, banana, marzipan, dark chocolate, manuka honey, salted pistacchio, olive bread, a faint old cheese note and something waxy. Love the balance all together.
    • Finish
Medium to long with salted crisps, caramel, subtle smoke, cinnamon, milk chocolate, honey and sultana.

I suspect that the distillate cuts for this batch are abit wide, contains abit more of the heads

  74. gossm01 scored this whisky 89 points Expert Senior

It is of medium viscosity and its bouquet is also of medium intensity. I have aromas of pear, vanilla, maritime notes, creme brulee, pear and sulfur. Relatively complex. A good balance between sweetness and dryness in terms of taste. The alcohol is relatively well integrated and it has a moderately heavy body.

  75. erwinnlim scored this whisky 86 points Expert Senior

Well what a difference this batch is to the previous one. Now a 50/50 split between bourbon and sherry (lots of refill sherry maybe?). This demonstrates classic Springbank characters similar to the 10 with all the flavours just levelled up. Value (£50) : 9/10
    • Nose
I really enjoy this nose. A big coastal mineral note comes through. Dying embers of smoke along the seas shore. It's got fresh fruits, I'm thinking pears, apricots and lemons. Fizzy lemonade even! Its got a nice kick of black pepper spice to it as well as a roasted hazelnut note. This is what classic Springbank should be!
    • Taste
Nice thick, oily mouthfeel. Immediately I notice a few things. There is a delicate sweetness of cooked apples and pears with a vanilla caramel sauce. The black pepper warmth comes through perfectly, nice spice but never burning. Then the most prominent note of salt, I could convince myself some salt flakes were added to my glass. It's absolutely wonderful and coastal with wet rocks and sea spray.
    • Finish
Again, salt is present but it now makes way for more oak spice and tobacco smoke. It lasts quite a long time with some more bitter hints coming through.

    • Taste

In addition to the Springbank 10, the Springbank 12 CS is THE incarnation of the distillery character of Springbank for me. The previous batch # 21 with the crazy barrel mixture was a small outlier, whereby one of the characteristics of the 12 CS is that it is basically never repeated, always different. The current batch # 22, with 50% ex-bourbon and 50% sherry casks on the leaf, has the same composition as batch 18 with 54.8%, has some similarities with this batch, but is ultimately completely different. Despite all the differences, one thing has always been relied on: the outstanding quality. Batch # 22 confirms this once again in the best possible way.
    • Nose
      91 91
A nose that one could only wish for in a Springbank 12 CS: salty, maritime, mineral and with a hint of moist and loamy soil. Smoked apricot and peach pieces, curry powder, thyme, pepper. Fruitiness and spiciness complement each other very well, above / below / next to it always this beautiful mineral note, these saltwater-wetted pebbles, this hint of warm machine oil. Mashed bananas, vanilla, rapeseed honey.
    • Taste
      91 91
Yes! Here you can look forward to the (hardly ingenious) 12CS standard program: mineral, salty, peppery and provided with perfectly balanced fruit notes. The start is (of course) strong, but only warming and very quickly completely mouth-filling. It looks like dry wood, but this could be one of the few batches where you can also make out a certain smoky note. Hand-warm toffee, vanilla ice cream with red fruits (currants), marzipan bread, nougat, coffee with milk. There is a lot going on here, there is real joy. Pepper, thyme and grated nutmeg are omnipresent, as is the mineral and maritime note.
    • Finish
      90 90
Noticeably scratches on a long finish. Salt liquorice, marzipan, nougat. The smoke aroma that is noticed on the tongue lingers for a very long time. Smoked apricot pieces, pepper & salt.

Strong Springbank character, albeit leaning more towards its fruity and mineral side.

The bottling is not exactly what I know from Springbank, but unfortunately it doesn't convince me more than others from the distillery. The taste of chewed apple pits is too dominant for me and there is too little to discover for a large barrel whisky. I like the nose and taste better with water, the finish better without. All in all, it seems immature to me. The purchase price of around € 80 might convince Springbank fans, but unfortunately not me.
    • Nose
      83 83
Reticent. Somewhat mineral. After a while in the glass, a little more spicy notes emerge. I have to try to get anything out of the glass at all. The whisky seems closed to me. After trying it for the first time, I added a little water in the hope that something more varied aromas would emerge. And yes, the water opens up the whisky at least a little. I imagine a tiny sulfur note. The whisky now looks more voluminous and I like it a little better on the nose. But I wouldn't describe it as particularly complex. For me there is little more to discover here today.
    • Taste
      82 82
Medium strong start. Slight sweetness from light fruits, pears and nectarines maybe. After a while in the mouth a bit tart. With water: Slightly peppery, but not too strong. A little less bitter. I also like this filling with water better in the mouth. The sweetness is still there and has hardly changed, maybe just got a little less direct and is spreading rather slowly. But not a big win for me here either.
    • Finish
      79 79
Pears, apple pits, light stone fruits. A hint of vanilla when I let the air slide over my tongue. Rather long and not really my cup of tea. The bitter, woody taste of apple seeds is too dominant for me. With water: The woody apple pits come to the fore even more. I found the finish a little better without water.

Nice to have a less sherry-laden Springbank in your glass again!

The 50% ex-BC leaves its mark, light fruits dominate (ripe pears, kumquats, light grapes), fresh raspberries, vanilla, honey and the characteristic chalky-mineral note. A soft whiff of smoke hovers over everything.

On the palate there is also a slightly peppery start, some milk chocolate and a gentle acidity (orange zest).

The finish is medium-long, warming, fruity-sweet
