Different from most previous CS 12 editions: Less sherried and less typical Springbank sulphury notes. It's very fruity: yellow fruits(ripe pears) and red fruits(raspberries) too. Not what I expected but very good once again.
I might raise my rating once I have a whole bottle instead of just a sample. :-)

Thanks to every non-megalomaniac that managed to describe the whisky on it own, instead of comparing it to X other batches.
All the "it was not as it used to be" moaning should be kept to oneself.

In addition to the Springbank 10, the Springbank 12 CS is THE incarnation of the distillery character of Springbank for me. The previous batch # 21 with the crazy barrel mixture was a small outlier, whereby one of the characteristics of the 12 CS is that it is basically never repeated, always different. The current batch # 22, with 50% ex-bourbon and 50% sherry casks on the leaf, has the same composition as batch 18 with 54.8%, has some similarities with this batch, but is ultimately completely different. Despite all the differences, one thing has always been relied on: the outstanding quality. Batch # 22 confirms this once again in the best possible way.

A nose that one could only wish for in a Springbank 12 CS: salty, maritime, mineral and with a hint of moist and loamy soil. Smoked apricot and peach pieces, curry powder, thyme, pepper. Fruitiness and spiciness complement each other very well, above / below / next to it always this beautiful mineral note, these saltwater-wetted pebbles, this hint of warm machine oil. Mashed bananas, vanilla, rapeseed honey.

Yes! Here you can look forward to the (hardly ingenious) 12CS standard program: mineral, salty, peppery and provided with perfectly balanced fruit notes. The start is (of course) strong, but only warming and very quickly completely mouth-filling. It looks like dry wood, but this could be one of the few batches where you can also make out a certain smoky note. Hand-warm toffee, vanilla ice cream with red fruits (currants), marzipan bread, nougat, coffee with milk. There is a lot going on here, there is real joy. Pepper, thyme and grated nutmeg are omnipresent, as is the mineral and maritime note.

Noticeably scratches on a long finish. Salt liquorice, marzipan, nougat. The smoke aroma that is noticed on the tongue lingers for a very long time. Smoked apricot pieces, pepper & salt.

The bottling is not exactly what I know from Springbank, but unfortunately it doesn't convince me more than others from the distillery. The taste of chewed apple pits is too dominant for me and there is too little to discover for a large barrel whisky. I like the nose and taste better with water, the finish better without. All in all, it seems immature to me. The purchase price of around € 80 might convince Springbank fans, but unfortunately not me.

Reticent. Somewhat mineral. After a while in the glass, a little more spicy notes emerge. I have to try to get anything out of the glass at all. The whisky seems closed to me. After trying it for the first time, I added a little water in the hope that something more varied aromas would emerge. And yes, the water opens up the whisky at least a little. I imagine a tiny sulfur note. The whisky now looks more voluminous and I like it a little better on the nose. But I wouldn't describe it as particularly complex. For me there is little more to discover here today.

Medium strong start. Slight sweetness from light fruits, pears and nectarines maybe. After a while in the mouth a bit tart. With water: Slightly peppery, but not too strong. A little less bitter. I also like this filling with water better in the mouth. The sweetness is still there and has hardly changed, maybe just got a little less direct and is spreading rather slowly. But not a big win for me here either.

Pears, apple pits, light stone fruits. A hint of vanilla when I let the air slide over my tongue. Rather long and not really my cup of tea. The bitter, woody taste of apple seeds is too dominant for me. With water: The woody apple pits come to the fore even more. I found the finish a little better without water.

Leather, orchard fruits, mineral, bit of smoke, toffee, very enjoyable, great quality for that price

Well what a difference this batch is to the previous one. Now a 50/50 split between bourbon and sherry (lots of refill sherry maybe?). This demonstrates classic Springbank characters similar to the 10 with all the flavours just levelled up. Value (£50) : 9/10
    • Nose
I really enjoy this nose. A big coastal mineral note comes through. Dying embers of smoke along the seas shore. It's got fresh fruits, I'm thinking pears, apricots and lemons. Fizzy lemonade even! Its got a nice kick of black pepper spice to it as well as a roasted hazelnut note. This is what classic Springbank should be!
    • Taste
Nice thick, oily mouthfeel. Immediately I notice a few things. There is a delicate sweetness of cooked apples and pears with a vanilla caramel sauce. The black pepper warmth comes through perfectly, nice spice but never burning. Then the most prominent note of salt, I could convince myself some salt flakes were added to my glass. It's absolutely wonderful and coastal with wet rocks and sea spray.
    • Finish
Again, salt is present but it now makes way for more oak spice and tobacco smoke. It lasts quite a long time with some more bitter hints coming through.

For around 70 € this is a great whisky and I probably wouldn't be able to resist. Unfortunately I tried it too late for that ;-)
    • Nose
Slightly dirty with tart fruit, the whole thing is led by vanilla, but even then quickly superimposed, light roasted aromas, orange, almonds, a little tobacco, minimal smoke, shortbread, very varied
    • Taste
Sweet and sour start, creamy, orange, orangeat, like a Christmas cookie, nut, spicy, slightly chocolate, but dark, dirty, light smoke, looking fresh, the orange is dominant, somehow also Christmassy, it's fun
    • Finish
Nutty, a little orange, tart, now more the orange skin, still very intense, fresh, still there for a long time, slightly sweet, almost vinous

  9. Ostap scored this whisky 89 points Connoisseur

The series continues to hold a high bar. High quality, bright, tasty, very drinkable.
    • Nose
      89 89
Dessert, oatmeal cookies, iris, mineral, licorice notes, branded salty note, degree felt, citrus (lemon peel), dried fruits, candied fruit, notes of tropical fruits, industrial nuances, barely hints of smoke and ash, smoky notes and farm .
    • Taste
      89 89
Candy, kaleidoscope of fruit explosions, juicy tropical fruits, very dessert, oak, mineral, vanilla.
    • Finish
      88 88
Long, warming, salty hand candies, very concentrated fruitiness, bitterness of apple stone, oak and minerality, a hint of soot and smoke.

  10. OJK scored this whisky 89 points Expert Senior

Motor oil, clementines, cream, toffee and macadamia nut on the nose, carrying through to the palate with a fizzing orange sherbet, some prickling black pepper and soft smoke carrying through to the salted toffee finish. Strong Springbank character, albeit leaning more towards its fruity and mineral side.
