I happened to be a in a local whisky bar the day after they got a bottle of this in, and tried a dram at a fairly reasonable price. After reading about the story and the inevitable hype behind this bottle, I was fairly sure this would be an interesting, overpriced failure.

What a nice surprise to find that it was actually quite delicious!
    • Nose
Classic Ardbeg peat up front (petrol, oil, ashes), but with an interesting softer layer underneath, with citrus, lemon zest, passion fruit and fresh floral blossom. Much lighter than expected. There is also a slight note of smoked meat evident.
    • Taste
On the palate, smoked and cured meats like chorizo. A warm breadiness/maltiness. Quite savoury. A drop of water brings out some more sweetness, but overall the taste is quite savoury, dialling down the peat a bit, and all is in good balance.
    • Finish
Excellent balance on the finish, with the lingering meatiness/saltiness complimented by the returning soft peat and fruity sweetness.
