A wonderfully impressive second showing from Torabhaig, who are really starting to win me over.
    • Nose
Warm and inviting. Savoury, sweet peat with notes of burlap, tobacco leaves and a whiff of mint, but also sweet orange zest and a touch of chalk. A gentle coastal breeze as well. I’m impressed with the balance and find it somewhat reminiscent of Ledaig sans the sauerkraut.
    • Taste
Oily and mouthcoating. A sooty arrival with plenty of barley husks, wood smoke and a subdued salinity, but also a touch of petrol. Some proper farmy notes as well as fennel.
    • Finish
The finish showcases a more mature side. There’s notes of tobacco, menthol and a gentle peat influence I normally associate with (much) older releases.

    Friendly.
    • Nose
Lemony nose, light maritime peat. A little background from a hospital waiting room that gives a little lemon confit.
    • Taste
Very fruity on the palate with candied lemons, hospital bandage peat.
    • Finish
Finish on a vanilla wax cream, slightly iodized. Always this background of hospital in common thread.

Quick hit review. Whisky calendar - Day 4.

Torabhaig is quickly building a reputation, so I was happy to find this sample. On the nose, briny peat smoke, rock pools and lime juice mix with mineral, earthy and sour notes. I'm getting Caol Ila vibes. Citrus fruits, pepper and eucalyptus follow on the palate, while the vegetal peatiness intensifies. Something sharp/hot stirs. Grapefruit and a dash of salt linger in the peaty finish. Allt Gleann hides its young age well, which is impressive, but I don't see a clear signature (yet).

    Quick review. Advent calendar 4.12.
I've done a review of this on another bottle code, and since I don't know the code of this one I'll put it on the default.
My score from that one is repeated here. For a 3-4 year old distillate this is pretty solid.
    • Nose
      84 84
I'm a fan of young peated whisky, so this is right up my street.
Very clean with low alc fumes.
      Sweet, phenolic and lightly fruity.
Here as on my previous encounter it's mostly yellow fruits, pears and peaches.
A hint of bread dough and barley which I didn't pick up at first.
    • Taste
      86 86
There's a puff of peat at arrival before it goes more clean smoke.
Tasty fresh young wood without much tannin.
Fruity sweet, again bright and yellow.
    • Finish
      87 87
The sweetness fades into a well medium finish.
And as it fades it leaves room for some salty maritime notes.
On this one I get a nice mint on the death that I didn't notice on the other.

Luckily he had a certain sweetness, otherwise I found him to be rather unspectacular. A little bit of a lot but not enough of something specific that would stick in my memory.
    • Nose
Light smoke and quite restrained, over time the smoke subsides and releases citrus aromas and tangerines, I also find subtle floral notes and a light sweetness and nuts.
    • Taste
Sparkling, a freshness and smoke with floral notes. The tingling becomes a burning sensation on the tongue.
    • Finish
Thin, warm and smokey on the exhale and malty with slightly musty old flowers. Long and a fermenting burn lingers.

Excellent! Is it young? Yes, but surprisingly complex for that age. Really looking forward to future releases from this distillery!
    • Nose
Peat, cream, strawberries, orange soda, and the strongest menthol.
    • Taste
Sweet and spicy. Sweeter than the inaugural release. Tangy and effervescent. It’s not complex, but it’s enjoyable. Very ashy.
    • Finish
Peat, ash, smoke, and menthol. Not particularly strong, but just not a whole lot of additional complexity. It’s a little hot and spirity, with some bitter oak.

This is a very unique/original/interesting/surprising whisky. For something that is not older than 4 years, it is actually f.....g brilliant! Peat, smoke, honey, light fruits (think yellow/green apples), some citrus and tobbaco. Tobbaco in a 3-4 years old whisky? Yes! When buying this, I was affraid of metalic notes, but there are none I can find when tasting it, luckily. Not overly too complex, but not a simplistic whisky either. This distillery has clearly a lot of potential...

    S 7
Thin, heavy legs. A whisky for the peathead. Not much complexity, very young, but wonderfully peated. It smells like Islay peat.

[78-82] I'll gladly welcome another dram.

    N 25
Heavily peated. Cigar ash. Sweet malt. Almost like nosing an Octomore 10.1. A whiff of vanilla and coastal breeze.

    P 24
Soft, earthy peat, a slight tune down compared to the nose. Then a punch from chilli and black pepper. A trip around the farmhouse, fresh hay. Much sweeter than expected from the nose, sweet malt all the way to support. A touch of menthol and brine in the background. The oat is faintly noticeable.

    F 24
Long-mid finish. Juicy fruits and moderate peat lingering. Young oak.

For me personally, the whisky is not a disappointment, but it is not a revelation either. Perhaps a whisky along the lines of “We are young and need the money”?

But if you know in advance that it is a very young whisky, you can definitely get involved with it and deal with it. I don't think he's bad for his age, I didn't miss any grades, the 46% really suits him. From my point of view, it already shows a bit of the potential and increases the anticipation for older bottlings from Torabhaig.

Very present, warm and pleasant smoky notes, sweet malt, there are a few reminiscences of a butter croissant, definitely maritime reminiscences with a slightly salty sea breeze, I can't find any fruit and unfortunately miss them a bit. Quite similar to its taste, pleasant spicy notes with a minimal bitterness are added relatively quickly, it then quickly becomes dry in the mouth, but always remains on the pleasant side. Medium-length, slightly sweet-malty and drying finish.

scbp-5253, very comfortable, peat whisky with heavy handmade traces, the peat is weaker than Islay Nansanjia and Longrow, far stronger than Genting, the charm is similar to the slightly heavier Genting bourbon barrels of single-digit years, far more A special release from his neighbor. The flavor has a strong sense of stimulation, so reducing the degree is the right choice. I can give you a copy of this product as a release in this aging range.
    • Nose
      89 89
Light straw color, a bit like agave smoked in a pit, lavender-style smoke, lime, youthful aloe vera, swimming pool disinfectant, and strong malt temperament, you can see the steps before distillation. 89
    • Taste
      89 89
The flavor is a little dull, the barrel is not much involved, and the aging time is not up to the standard, showing a very young, slightly sour, maltose, smoky, salted fish, pepper salt as the main axis, and the finish is warm with a lot of ginger . The wine is warm and comfortable, without excessive bitterness. p90b88
    • Finish
      88 88
Slightly astringent, cool, long finish, comfortable, full, without annoying low-quality tannins. 88

This whisky comes from the still young Torabhaig distillery on the Isle of Skye. It is therefore not surprising that visually I have a straw-yellow whisky with quite narrow windows in the glass. But it is neither cold-filtered nor colored and is bottled with an alcohol content of 46% vol. So you might expect a young savage.

This expectation is partly fulfilled. It is definitely not an off-the-shelf whisky and I will definitely keep an eye on further developments.
    • Nose
      82 82
Phenolic smoke, smoked ham, herbs like bay and juniper. On the fruit side, green notes like bergamot, quince and lime. It's a rather subdued fruit that's almost floral: verbena and white lilac come to mind. The sweetness is there, but only subdued.

Quite exciting from the first perception; I think it would go very well with oysters.
    • Taste
      84 84
Surprisingly, the smoke does not dominate but is relatively subdued. This young dram appears somewhat oily, with a slight sharpness at the tip of the tongue, herbal and with fresh mint. The fruit and sweetness remains rather vague, but reminds me of an unripe honeydew melon on oatmeal.

The mouthfeel is fresh and pleasant, even if it doesn't quite meet my taste. But the whisky is well made and certainly an individualist.
    • Finish
      82 82
The finish is medium long and initially dominated by white pepper and mint. After the onset of salivation, the smoky flavor spreads, followed by green tea and lime zest. A gentle medical note spreads and the whisky leaves a very straightforward and clean impression.

So far, the situation on the Isle of Skye has been clear: Whisky from Skye was Talisker. Made by the Sea, i.e. colored, filtered and matured on the mainland. Now the whisky world on the island is coming to life. Torabhaig brings the first whiskys onto the market, a young distillery on the south east coast of the island. Also quite smoky, in contrast to the Talisker but not chill filtered and above all not colored. Ok, this distillery doesn't have warehouses on the island (yet?). It is young whisky and therefore also correspondingly light.

    www.glen-efze.de
    • Nose
A strong smoke is immediately noticeable in the aroma, which is significantly stronger than the Talisker smoke and is reminiscent of Islay. The smoke is mineral with an ashy note, somewhat similar to Caol Ila, but also has a maritime touch. The smoke is very direct and straight, which of course is also due to the young age and the aging in ex-bourbon casks.

Behind the smoke the whisky becomes sweet with notes of biscuit dough and vanilla, maybe some mirabelle plum. All this is not mature and complex, but wild and direct.
    • Taste
The smoke is there in the taste, but there are also woody tones. Here the sweetness starts at the beginning, then the whisky becomes tart and slightly astringent, which is not unpleasant. It lacks the often obtrusive sweet pears of other young whiskys, the smoke gives an aspect that masks the youth, curbs the sweetness and makes the whisky interesting. But the taste is not complex. The alcohol is only 46% vol. strong but not biting.
    • Finish
The whisky is young and therefore not long lasting. At the end, some ash remains on the palate, a hint of fruit syrup and then it's good.

A thoroughly drinkable young whisky, which still needs time to mature. Definitely going to be an interesting distillery, starting with a edgier, clearer smoke than Talisker and has the potential to produce whiskys with real Skye cred. This one is good - it will certainly be exciting in three or four years ...

I had the Torabhaig Legacy and I liked it a lot, rated it 85 points and the only reason I did not rank it higher was a very short finish. But Torabhaig is definitely on my radar and I am happy that I got this release as well.
    • Nose
      86 86
A very clean nose, Smoke and Salt immediately fills my nostrils, I get smoke, seaweed, limes, even more salt, generall grassy notes, burnt hay, and some burnt seasoning. In the nose it reminds me of Ledaig (without the horse stable notes) and of Inchfad.
    • Taste
      87 87
Seems quite young, fills the mouth perfectly, quite oily, lot of barley notes, that are again followed by grass and strong smoke notes, there are also some lemons in there and even more salt, I’d say burnt salt pretzels which is really nice.
    • Finish
      84 84
Medium long but definitely longer than in the legacy series which was gone quite quickly. Again a nice seabreeze and smoke, followed by strong but perfectly balanced barley and grass notes. A little bitter oak notes come to the forefront as well and in the end I get a sweet mint note.

A solid young smoky malt. He's doing well for his age and has a few grades of his own. You really can't expect much more than that.
Now you just have to wait a few more years until there are older bottlings. There is definitely potential.
    • Nose
Relatively fresh and smoky on the nose. I'll describe it visually. You make a fire on a pebble beach with a good sea breeze and throw peat and herbs into the fire. There is also tequila with lemon and salt to drink :-)
    • Taste
Quite mild and oily start. sugar beets. Glucose. Then it tingles. Sour yellow and green wine gums. Bit of white pepper. Anise. cloves. Some incense. Generally less smoky than still on the nose.
    • Finish
Some orange oil. The smoke is getting drier. Bit of salty liquorice.

    Old Valley

After the successful launch of their Inaugural Release, the Torabhaig distillery founded on Skye in 2017 came up a few months ago with this second release in their so-called Legacy Series. The young malt, composed from around 300 bourbon barrels from 2017 and 2018, listens to the name Allt Gleann, which means as much as Old Valley. Like its predecessor, it is bottled at 46%.

I stick my nose in the glass and immediately get the feeling of standing with an old pharmacist’s shop. Burn ointment, plasters and something that reminds me of jute bags. Soft, sweet peat, white fruit and orange peel with a hint of kelp. In all honesty, reminds me a bit of Caol Ila or even Ledaig.

It is surprisingly soft on arrival. The body is even a bit on the light side. But immediately peaty on soot, brackish water, aniseed, vanilla and icing sugar. A little farmy. The comparison with Caol Ila and Ledaig is again valid, much more than the often made comparison with Talisker.

The aftertaste offers menthol, peat, green herbs and a slight bitterness. Gently drying.

For his young age, this is already quite a malt. As it is also friendly priced (about 55 EUR), I can only be happy about this release. They are making good progress at Torabhaig.

Still young and therefore slightly too alcoholic/sulphuric. I can see where this is going though with its not too overpowering peat level and peasant saltiness.

  44. Stanzeflasche scored this whisky 85 points Expert Senior

From the start, coarse salt, the foam, the tide, the sand saturated with sea water, the sea breeze. On top of this a thick and fairly frank peat, the rest is marked by the influence of Bourbon barrels, especially creamy vanilla and a few grapes Italia. On the palate, it is very light, with vague smoky hints, a good pile of vegetal peat and a grain of salt. Nice finish, earthy and iodized, not very long but correct. Fleur de sel. Mirabelle plum.

    (TASTED BLIND)
NOSE: Peated. Mild / relatively light and sweet ashes. Vegetal dry peat notes with some Juniper and coniferous shrubs but also iodine and bandages. Later roasted black pepper and licorice. Not your typical Port Ellen Maltings peat, still I think it must be Islay peat. Nice. (89p).
TASTE: The arrival is semi-sweet and moderately peaty. On the mid palate mild black pepper, a little licorice. Sugary barley sweetness. Delicious but not very complex. (87p).
FINISH: Black pepper, a little ash and licorice. (86p).
OVERALL: A medium young to medium aged Islay whisky? And if so, which? To little bacon and ashes to be Caol Ila, not enough citrus to be Ardbeg, the medicinal side is not rich or fat enough to be Laphroaig, close to Port Charlotte on the nose but too light and sugary in the mouth. Also to clean to be a Ledaig. Hmmm... Total score 87 points.

Semi-long. Salted meat, and definately cereal and malty. Woody. Herbs and licorace candy. More towards the sooty and tobacco side towards the very end

Impressive dram that keeps on giving. Broad flavors, great for rather wild nose and taste associations.

Leather, onion, parsley, mint, mint tea, fennel, but also: leather polish, slightly medicinal even, like the scent of bandages, and a sweeter burnt sugar overtone.

Arrival: warm, sugary, honey, orange juice, for Dutch people; punica oase, pineapple or mango, mostly mango. Development: oily texture, mouthfeel centers on the tongue, not the cheeks so much, more warmth, warm honey, orange peel, warm sangria. Incredibly layered but very accessible, still.
    • Finish
      87 87
Finish: sweet/sour/salty all represent. There is a softer bitterness that remains in the end. Not overly smoky, but definitely peated. Fresh bacon, as opposed to BBQ'd or honey glazed bacon. Green herbs return to support some of the bitter, particularly green onion. Good length, with eventually the return of tropical fruit like the flavor of warm pineapple on a pizza.

A really impressive and characterful malt. It is sweeter than Ledaig but has it that dry coastal wood smoke, it has touches of petrol from Ardbeg, plus a peppery salinity from Talisker. The spirit is quite oily, and there are some intgeresting farmy notes. With high quality casks, we could see wonders in the future from that distillery, because the spirit has plenty of character.

My first impression was that it immediately crushes your sense of smell in an unbelievably sharp way. Let it stand... And then it was a lot better. Similar to the previous one, only less pronounced the smell of leather and citrus...

Finish picks up where the flavor left off. The pepperiness quickly disappears, and a salty oily taste with a bitterness and in the distance notes of vanilla and maybe some honey linger. The finish is the most pleasant of this whisky.

Crafted pretty well, but still a bit angular. With better barrels and longer maturation, very interesting bottlings could be created here in the future - the distillery character obviously has a lot to offer.

Nose: mineral, musty and fresh, sea breeze, oysters, lime, green apples, floral notes, vanilla, cold smoke, somewhat greasy, slightly mint

Palate: mineral and tangy, oysters, lime, vanilla, cold smoke, a few green apples, sea breeze

Finish: warm, short to medium length, vanilla cream, cold smoke, somewhat metallic

Rating: yeah, is okay. Sea breeze, cold smoke, vanilla. Just too young, not particularly great barrels, and the 46% make it appear a bit flat. It doesn't go far, but it's rock solid for three years and well made for me, I still find the distillery exciting, but the whiskys still need a few more years. That being said: the price (60 €) doesn't work at all! I found the 'The Legacy' predecessor from 2020 a bit better (just for comparison in the glass, and it is significantly better, but also 'just' good).

Alluring and pleasant. At the very start of initial nose, a light note of smoke, sweet peat and sea breeze occupies the centre of the aroma palate. Then, citrus fruits of orange, lemon with hints of menthol following closely. Allowed it to breath and with drops of water, it give ways to beeswax, gunny ropes, grated ginger and malted barley. The salty component becomes increasing more precise. Gradually, a very pleasant sensation of fullness, floral and fruity can be discover at the end.
    • Taste
      87 87
Rich and oily on arrival. A very confident smokiness and saltiness on the first sip, supported by a backbone of malt and barley, it gradually reveals wild honey, pear and candied citrus fruits. With water: sweetness elevated following closely by the briny notes, it then develops into mentholated with touches of camphor. The end of the palate steps to the edge of the cliff with more sea air with tobacco ashes.
    • Finish
      87 87
Medium long, generous. Distinctive mouthfeel brush across the taste buds, gently leaving setting down notes of saline, smokes and honey. It also allows a glimpse of floral notes and a wee bit of minerality. Simultaneously, the retro nasal and empty glass reveal an evanescence that is full of characters that lingers with the notes of camphor and saltiness.

It has a relatively oily viscosity and its bouquet is of a relatively strong intensity. I have aromas of marine peat smoke, citrus fruit, vanilla and pear. Not very complex yet, of course. A good balance between sweetness and dryness in terms of taste. The alcohol is very well integrated and it has a medium body.

Aroma: lots of smoke, fruity, vanilla, umami

Taste: smoky, surprisingly oily, creamy, spicy, a little pepper, a hint of salt

Finishes: medium to long, a little fruit
