The Talisker 10-YO remains one of the decent classics and the 2021 edition still lives up to the name. With it's profound Gold Amber Color, notes of seaside, leather, pepper and smoke it can be easily distinguished.

Adding a few drops of water opens up more of the smokiness of this dram on the Nose reminding of Newly Lit Charcoal.

Seaside Spray, Dried Leather, Peppercorn, Light Smoke, Coffee Caramel.
When going deeper into the scent hints of Sour Apple and Sour Cherries can be observed.

Sweet with a touch of brine, Light Smoke, Dried Leather and Chilies.

Maritime, more peaty and smoky than it used to be in the past but good, very drinkable, very good price value ratio, serves well as daily dram for me
    • Nose

Seabreeze, iodine, liquorice, ripe yellow fruits, tobacco, whiffs of peat and smoke, hint of honey and herbs, peach, apricot - quite nice
    • Taste

Little punchy, fruity, liquorice, honey, ripe orchard fruits, subtle sweetness, spices, hint of peat and smoke, tobacco, little herbs, iodine, brine, seaweed, green tea, hint of oak wood - really not bad
    • Finish
      88 88
Medium long, warm, spices, liquorice, some peat and smoke

At this price point it's a very good choice. I would say almost a must-have.
    • Nose
      86 86
smoke, pepper, maritime-salt, sea breeze and hint of a leather
    • Taste
      87 87
similar to nose, but pepper is more prominent, a bit of sweetness, maybe a hint of caramel in the back
    • Finish
      87 87
smoky, peppery, hint of spice (chili), medium-long, rather dry

  8. Boletus did not rate this whisky Connoisseur

In my eyes still a good malt, but compared to the previous version somehow softer and more boring, but at the same time more unbalanced in terms of the distillate.
What used to be a peppery note of spices on the finish was more like a mixture of alcoholic afterburner (“hot spirit”) and ginger spiciness when I tasted it.

New packaging (since I bought a bottle for the last time), new recipe? I’ve been offered two 2cl samples that I took some serious time with at 2 completely different moments. Here’s my thoughts…
    • Nose
Instantly Talisker characteristics with smells of salty seaweed and light peat. Something I almost always get with Talisker expressions. Pleasant salty flavors and sweet peat. On top of it there’s a certain fruitiness that I associate with gold berries, Elstar apple and dried apricot. There’s also something like green tea and freshly jacked up black pepper. It gives this nose a certain depth. Although an entry Talisker I think it’s just a lovely nose. Not overly complex but tasteful and with pleasant balance. First or second time didn’t really change anything in terms of the nosing.
    • Taste
Tastewise this offers quite some sweetness with honey, malted barley and subtle fruitiness. Kid palate I get a clear hint of coastal peat that increases in dominancy while swallowing. During the second time I had the feeling it gave a little more spices on the palate which is a good thing.
    • Finish
Medium length and with. Very pleasant smokiness that’s covering the mouth. It’s like chewing on a sweet cloud of soft and gentle peatsmoke. Smoky barley, sweet earthy flavors and some subtle black peppers are calling the shots here. There’s not a lot of fruitiness in the finish. The second time I got a wee more barley-like flavors. It’s pleasant and lingers on for quite a while but in a subtle way of speaking. And that’s fine since it’s a lightly peated 10yo aged in not to dominante casks.

Since the rebranding took place and it all looked quite ‘cosmetic’ I was afraid that the flavor and smell would also have been affected. But I have to admit that this is still unmistakably Talisker. The seaweed, the saltiness and the peaty flavors are all still there. The last bottle of Talisker I had was around 2020 in the old label. What does pass my mind is that the peat level seems to be a little more subtle, but then again, that could be a batch difference. Wat me wel opvalt is dat in vergelijking met toen, het turflevel iets minder lijkt te zijn. It has never been a peatbomb. It seems to be a little less fruity and a little more spiced in the finish but other then that I can’t really find big differences that suggest a lot of change. I guess I’ll have to buy one or two now there’s a big discount here in the Netherlands at the moment of writing!

    • Nose
Sweet peat smoke, oranges, something dusty, red apples, oysters and smoked fish.
    • Taste
Smoky oranges, pepper, salt, lemon, red apples and oysters.
    • Finish
At least medium. The herbs with orange and lemon remain behind.

      Good price/quality.
I had a bit of a hard time opening the bottle, there was something disturbing that seemed like an excessive amount of paprika. But that completely disappeared after a while in the bottle.

Feels a bit peatier than past bottlings of Talisker 10. The typical peppery notes are there. But there is also something rougher about this one, like the casks are tired and it’s coming up bland for me now. I’ve always liked the Talisker variation on Islay peat, but I don’t think this is a bottling I’ll be getting anymore.

  18. effective_frame scored this whisky 83 points Member Senior

It's a classic for a reason - those salty coastal notes are just so unique and characterful. This is a great intro to peat as well, since it lacks so many of those "off-putting" tarry, industrial notes that a lot of Islays have and some find challenging. Nice clean and mild smoke. It’s not overly complex and the bottle hasn’t changed much in the year it’s been open, but the flavors that are there are punchy, fun, and complimentary. Great whisky that’s carved out its own little flavor niche, readily available at a fair price to boot.
    • Nose
Very coastal. Briny sea air with some light and dry peat smoke. Quarry dust. Cracked pepper toasting in a pan. Faint fruitiness, red apples and some banana? Powdery chocolate shavings.
    • Taste
Enlivening and spicy on the front of the palate. New forms of pepper showing up - fruity chilies and mouth-watering Szechuan peppercorn. Tangy and salty with a deep, chocolate-caramel sweetness looming.
    • Finish
Tingly pepper notes hang around for some time, the briny sea flavors turn slightly halogen-y (iodine, chlorine). Dry finish, leathery.

The iconic whisky from the Isle of Skye, matured for 10 years, peated, part of the Classic Malts and therefore one of the whiskys that many whisky connoisseurs have known for years. But also colored and chill-filtered. Made by the Sea?

    www.glen-efze.de
    • Nose
Talisker is powerfully smoky and quite on par with some Islay smokers. The smoke isn't primarily medicinal/phenolic or sooty, it's the nice smoke of a warm campfire. This makes it comparable and confusing with Caol Ila. Behind the smoke come fruit, some dark cherries and some orange zest.
    • Taste
In the mouth it is oily and the smoke is powerful here too. The fruits are quite restrained, are only slightly sweet and are then replaced by a smoky wood note. It's all delicious, but without a big highlight. The nice smoke determines the taste. Chilli Catch? I've never been able to do much with it... There is a certain sharpness, which can also come from the alcohol, but it doesn't bother me.
    • Finish
In the aftertaste, the whisky becomes dry in the mouth, but the plum is still noticeable. Not too complex but easy to drink.

Talisker 10 is a good whisky to drink again and again, but not particularly exciting either. Sure, in the end it's just a Diageo mass product with all the features that you don't like about this group. And although it was distilled on the Skye coast, it is believed to have matured at Diageo's central warehouse near Sterling. Because on Skye they definitely don't have the sufficient amount of warehouses. Nevertheless, a good, tasty whisky that you have to have on the shelf every few years.

The newer bottling has increased for me in terms of smoke, I also find it more maritime and pleasing. The aromas run through like a red thread. Always good the Talisker 10, shouldn't be missing in the bar - 05/25/2022
    • Nose
      86 86
Sweet, warm smoke, the smoke seems more intense to me, that's my final impression, maritime, salted caramel, ripe fruit flesh in the background, lemongrass, mint, freshly ground pepper
    • Taste
      86 86
Malty and creamy, buttery avocado, subtle citrus aroma, more like lemongrass, here too the smoke seems more intense to me than in the older bottlings, maritime, salty caramel, the chili heat remains at the end
    • Finish
      84 84

Easily the best of the three. With Lagavulin 16yo now premiumised, this is now the go-to malt when you find yourself out & about [limited]. This typical experience only goes to further highlight where Waterford is in comparison to the global standard fare. Waterford is making cracking whisky and their journey has only just begun.

It used to be a no-go malt for me, today it's almost pleasing. Is it me or the malt? Who knows. Still, what you get here for cheap money is fantastic. Nice peat, fruit, a bit salty maritime, citrus and I think that's where the complacency really comes from, embedded in a bed of vanilla oak. Nice whisky.
