The quality of the vintages or “batches” of the past few years at the 16yo from Lagavulin fluctuates, but if you are lucky you will find a bottling that is reminiscent of the old days. In any case, this 2021 is playing up there and is really fun.
    • Nose

Warm peat smoke over dried apricots. Sweet and spicy with mild pepper and clove powder, nougat chocolate and fudge. The smoky note is delicate and you might think that it would even have disappeared after a while.
    • Taste
      88 88
Sweet and smoky start, mild. The smoky note is present, but at the beginning still withdrawn. Drought spreads. Mild mixture of herbs, pepper (more intense than on the nose), cloves, oregano, espresso beans, dark chocolate. Dried apricots, raisins. The smoke intensity increases noticeably over time.
    • Finish

Medium length, dry. The sweetness of the fruit disappears, peat smoke, herbs, spices and dark chocolate remain. And I catch myself thinking that the glass was empty far too quickly and that I would have to refill it again.

I liked it a lot, unfortunately the WOW effect didn't materialize. With a few drops of water it became more accommodating and I liked it better. What bothered me, however, was a slight bitterness, which I found unpleasant.
    • Nose
A strong pleasant smoke like a wood campfire, with sherry, leather, dark fruits and orange.
    • Taste
Strong, pepper, dark sweetness, campfire ash and oak.
    • Finish
Long, warm, dry oak and little bitterness

Lagavulin 16 years, 43% alc. Original bottling (2021). Ageing: Bourbon and Sherry casks

Nose: peat and tar, pleasantly dry smoke. Behind it, in addition to citrus fruits, machine oil and a little rubber. The sweetness increases, orange marmalade next to almonds, salt water and cedar wood, a little leather can also be found.

Palate: Intensely smoky, dry and slightly salty. Liquorice, anise and salmiak next to tar and smoker, various herbs, blood oranges. Also very light cocoa, again the orange marmalade and pickled olives.

Finish: Land and dry, mineral and salty.

Conclusion: Lagavulin has managed to maintain the quality for decades, even if the batches have repeatedly changed minimally over the years. Very beautiful. 86/100 points (2021).

  8. KB201 did not rate this whisky Connoisseur

The Lagavulin classic is kilned with a high smoke content in the malt. The stills of the distillery are pear-shaped, so that during the distillation all flavors can be transferred to the condensers. The single malt then matures in bourbon and sherry casks to perfection.

I would have imagined the smoke to be much more intense and was therefore positively surprised by the aroma. Not a stinker!
I also like the finish very much.
    Very tasty whisky!
    • Nose
very well integrated smoke, then opens up over time, maritime, herbs, lemon
    • Taste
Pepper, a lot of sweetness, some earth that goes more and more (but not too much) towards the ashtray, salt
    • Finish
      long lasting, salty mild, oak
