A very different take on rye, not bad just different.
Sweet woody notes.
Lots of fruit, almost tropical, but also a hint of light red berries.
Very little spice for a rye.
Some herbs. Quite complex and definitely pleasant.
A little water reduces what was of the 48% alc fumes as well as mellows the herbs. Kind of pulling everything tighter together. More red apples with a hint of zest.
Also sweet on the arrival.
Then bitter herbs.
Followed by wood and a modest amount of spice.
Water reduces the sweetness but enhances about everything else.
Spice carries over into the finish, where it is actually most noticeable.
Not sure if it is the wood or the herbs, but something gets a little too astringent for my liking.
Somehow saved by a minty freshness.
With water everything is toned down considerably, most noticeable the far less astringent feel.
