[September, 2021] Out of curiosity I do a sampling of all new Diageo "Flora & Fauna" series releases. The first ten drams (Auchroisk, Teaninich, Mannochmore, Glen Spey, Inchgower, Glenlossie, Linkwood, Strathmill, Blair Athol, Benrinnes) were all sub-standard and not worth the money (according to my taste buds only) so this is the last chance to find a Flora & Fauna edition of acceptable quality...

...and this chance is gone down the drain, like all other drams. It truly seems as if Diageo uses the Flora & Fauna editions to dispose its sub-standard casks which were exhausted already at filling time and hence did not support the maturation of the spirit. As a result all these drams own very weak (some non-existent) noses and rather immature flavour profiles with little impressions of interest. To be honest, I did not like any of these drams and I did not finish any of the samples. Shame on you, Diageo!
    • Nose
      81 81
The colour is old gold and the nose offers again the shy profile of leached casks. First there is (almost) nothing to detect - after some breathing shy sherry aromas pop up but the malt stays silent. A very disappointing nose, hardly enjoyable.
    • Taste
      83 83
The taste is barley sugary sweet and wood-tannic bitter with nothing of interest and nothing really to enjoy (according to my taste buds). After some chewing some shy sherry flavours are detectable which create a somewhat drinkable profile, at least. No, I do not empty this sample either.
    • Finish
      80 80
The dram arrives unimpressive at the palate with just minor coating effects but major drying-astringent moments. The finish is like with all other editions short and adds nothing new except that unpleasant bitter dryness of heavy tannins again. Forget about about, it just flattens everything without releasing something of interest.

A great and (I guess) wedded malt that is fun and on top of that has a fair price tag. On the one hand it looks rather dignified, but it has heavy and spicy notes due to the somewhat older age and the (probable) sherry influence. Like the Benrinnes 15, it requires a little time and patience, but then opens up to a great range of flavors. Top!
    • Nose
      87 87
Juicy, slightly dark fruit notes and a hint of medium-heavy, spicy sherry aromas. Dark red apple, a fresh hint of grain and some brown sugar. After a while, the fruits become a little fresher and more tangy, the apple tends to be green, and sweet citrus notes are added. Always accompanied by an enigmatic, but rather heavy, spicy note. After a while you will find some honey syrup and caramelized fruits with sweet spices that are reminiscent of a candy stand at the fair (candy apple and stomach bread).
    • Taste
      87 87
Great fresh, sweet and almost oily fruit notes, plus strong dark caramel and sweet spicy notes. Just as light old sherry notes.

The aromas are really very strongly interwoven, the sweetness with the rather heavy aromas of spice and caramel, in combination with the wood influence, give a complex overall picture. Simply delicious!

Only a few percentage points more alcohol would not have hurt here, but that's a complaint at a high level.
    • Finish
      86 86
Nice transition with slightly dry notes, tart espresso and tangy-sweet fruits that stay in the background. Very light tart, dry herbal notes also emerge. Flattens out a little too quickly, but doesn't spoil the overall impression.

As with the other Flora & Fauna range from Diageo, these are good bottles to have to establish a foundational for distillery character. Great place(s) to begin a journey.

    Overall a pleasant sherry malt.
In the nose I find the alcohol quite present for only 43%.
In terms of aroma profile, there is a beautiful interplay between nose and palate.

Beautiful, well aged whisky from refill sherry casks. Gentlemen whisky, quite light in nature. Medium complexity. Expect rum soaked pralines, milk chocolate, apricots, no bitternes, no sulphur, no sharpness. Just pure inoffensive joy. Really well made. For me, clearly the best from the entire Flora & Fauna series that is currently available.

After a long time, I will now evaluate one of my bar cabinet standards in more detail.
This is now the second bottle of this malt that I have killed. Luckily I still have 2 left...
At that time (2018) the first bottle was still significantly more expensive and much rarer to obtain.
Diageo has brought out the whole "flora&fauna" series again.
There are now three bottlings in this series that I find most interesting:
Dailuaine 16, Benrinnes 15 and Blair Athol 12
    That's right: the sherry machines.
Compared to the earlier ones, I find the 2021 a little rounder but also a little more coherent.
    • Nose
      Balanced.
      Not overwhelming but still interesting.
Notes of wood and sherry are noticeable.
    • Taste
The nose continues here, nothing stings, nothing offends.
A beautiful cutie. The dryness of past bottlings has given way to a fine sweetness.
Sufficient notes of wood for a 16 are also there.
    • Finish
      Medium length and balanced.

Here you get what you want from a 16-years-old Speyside whisky, maybe even a bit more. This malt develops as it travels from your nose, through the tongue and into your throat. It is well matured, the fruit and spices are beautifully composed and round. Nothing sticks out, nothing bothers. Simply very nice.
    • Nose
      84 84
A classic 16-years-old Speyside nose. Well matured with yellow and red fruit, some orange, some nuts, a bit oak with its spices. Exactly as a 16-years-old Speyside whisky should be.
    • Taste
      86 86
Soft and light on the tongue, slightly astringent. Some hidden sweetness is noticeable and the spices are more prominent.
    • Finish
      88 88
Yes, here it is. It is definitely it's best side. Nice spicy flavours, in keeping with its age, I think, but perfectly composed and rounded. Absolutely beautiful.

Nice thing, fun. The taste should have been matured in sherry and refill sherry casks. Not just a simple finish. That is reflected. The dram is beautifully round, complex but not overly demanding. For the price at 16 years old, a pleasant exception in times like these. Great PLV.
    • Nose
      Sweet, dark chocolate
      Soft
      spicy, slightly aniseed, vanilla
      fruits, dark sherry fruits, church

    • Taste

      malty
    • Finish

  16. RJKrueger scored this whisky 86 points Expert Senior

Overall, a very successful representative of the Flora & Fauna series, round and pleasing without being spectacular. Very suitable as a daily dram.
    • Nose
      87 87
Citrus notes with hints of grapefruit and mirabelle plum, light, delicate notes of sherry. Overall aromatically pleasant.
    • Taste
      86 86
Soft but still spicier than the nose, with oranges, some chocolate and nuts. Quite round and pleasing. Appears a little younger than the specified 16 years.
    • Finish
      85 85
Medium-long finish with sweet fruits, malt and some herbal notes; dry but without a bitter aftertaste. One would like to have longer, but it fades too quickly and then fades a little more slowly.

    Color: amber (attention: caramel!)

Nose: There are various flavors behind a slight note of fuel. Vanilla notes interweave with hardly definable fruit notes. You can "noise" for a long time and always find another aspect.

Taste: honey, citrus flakes (apple-orange mix?), Light spiciness

Finish: it becomes dry towards the end. For me, the taste is on the edge of the tongue. Salivation begins towards the end. The malt disappears calmly (medium length) like a wave on a beach.

Conclusion: For the requested 55 euros (2021), the malt offers an interesting mix of noise and taste. Therefore, 85 points are actually justified. But the caramel used is a no-go for me. That's why I'm reducing the value to 75.

    nose:
grassy, spray fallen on seaweed, pink fruits on raspberry and orange, it is very sweet with sweet cocoa beans, with honey in crystallized pieces, the wood is well soaked, impregnated, return of dried stems
    mouth:
very pleasant sherry, sweetness, malt, peppery spices further enhance the sensation of cooked fruits on orange zest, on sour cherries, dried grapes, a little on sweet wine
the wood present soft but intense in return with the slightly overcooked caramel, toasted and the very sweet coffee
    final:
on burnt caramel, dark chocolate, coffee extract, sherry fruit marked with citrus and zest, peppery spices and steeped herbs at the end amplify this very good dram.

Nice sherry malt, which is still quite changeable and sweet on the nose, then remains tart, spicy to bitter in the mouth and finish.
    • Nose
      88 88
Initially sweet and fruity with berries. Honey, cranberries, malt, caramel and red apples. The alcohol has a slightly cooling effect and a bit minty. Later some salt and dates. Acts according to its age. Nice nose that has changed after the first sip. Now slightly musty and herbal.
    • Taste
      86 86
But quite an oily mouthfeel. The red berries flash briefly, then tart / bitter aromas take over. Black pepper on the tip of the tongue, then ginger and wood spice. I miss a bit of fruit or sweetness here.
    • Finish
      87 87
Strong and spicy in the direct finish. At this point, at the latest, the few percent have been forgotten. The years in the barrel have also left their mark here and leave a long finish. Alternately fruity and slightly bitter, with spicy and earthy notes.

Still cautious on the nose, it opens up in taste. The intense flavor is a bit hot at first. The finish shows the strengths of the malt. At the bottom, I like the aroma best.

An interesting drop, which is probably aimed at the advanced beginner. All in all, he is a little too weak on the chest for me with his 43%. But you can't deny that he has something extraordinary about him. It is the play of aromas of old and fresh flavors.
The smell is pleasant, but also somewhat arbitrary and reserved.
In terms of taste, it initially delivers a slightly peppery tingle (white pepper) on the tongue along with flavors of light fruits and berries. I find grapefruit, blood orange and star fruit. This start brings with it an exciting freshness.
In addition, light notes of heavier, older flavors are added. So you have ripe red apples and peaches, younger plums and a good heather honey. He manages the leap to a light leatheriness. I don't find tobacco and wood notes. There is hardly any exit.
With perhaps 46%, he could score better as he is now, but the beautiful, settled aromas are unfortunately only present in the appeal, as they are not sufficiently pushed to the fore.
It has only just been opened and an exciting development is foreseeable, as it has already indicated after a long time in the glass.

Repeat tastings of the bottle that had been open for weeks or months showed the following:
He seems increasingly settled and older. He actually gets better with time! Now he gets a strong 87 points from me.

The bottom line is that at 16 years old and under €60 on offer it's a good whisky for what's on offer.
