the nick-name really fits the profile of this spirit.. more of a free jazz-y composition, where apparently dissonant notes eventually come together with an incredible coherence that simply explains why Springbank is currently the brightest star in the Scotch universe.. fruity as the recent Local Barley 10 (not the black one.. the real one).. vertical (as they say) á la the stratospheric LB 16.. but is more complex than the 10 and more fun than the 16..

engine oil never smelled so good.. raw and all that jazz.. crisp.. sorry, this is not much of a review, at least not the helpful kind.. but that’s ok, it’s not like we have to decide whether we should buy a bottle or two..

I get a strange, Bowmore-y vioet and salty note.. on top of the whole Springbankian funk armada.. user Phil’s notes are very on point.. i comand him for his review!

My sample was sitting on the shelf for 8 years.
The nose and taste are just so wonderful with so much fruit, some peat, musty notes, cellar, farm yard. Water makes the nose explode, adding some nuts to the mix. lovely, lovely, lovely

This whisky got so much better with time. The air in the bottle did wonders. Add just a little water for staggering results.
One of the best, if not the best, Springbank that ever passed my throat. Simply excellent. What a magnificent experience.

Strong, oily, dirty, just ripe red fruit, crushed seashells, dirt, butterscotch, sulfur, oak,
Exactly how one likes it's Springbank single malt IMO.

First slow. Sweet ripe red fruit, comes walking in. Then fast. The oily butterscotch and dirt come slamming in like a tsunami. A giant brawl commences. The sweet red fruit battle it out with the oily butterscotch and dirt. In the end, both die fighting without a prevailing contestant. Absolutely stunning.

Medium long. The ripe red fruit swirls in the mouth, the oily dirt and crushed seashells stick to the middle and back of the mouth. All die slowly without getting bitter or drying.

Its a bit of a one you got to be in the mood for in my opinion. But when you're in the mood it's amazing springbankiness as usual!

I tasted it twice from a sample.. The first time I noticed a little bit sulfury notes but not disturbing in any way. Apart from that everything you can expect of a sherryed Springbank. Ad a small amount of water and it becomes very friendly yet powerfull. Great.

The second time I started nosing and sipping immediately instead of letting it breath for 15-20 min.. As the time before.. That was a mistake I'm afraid.... The sulfur was much more prominent and I got the feeling I chewed of the red heads of a box of match sticks.... And after that I had a difficult time getting arround that.... But theire was definitely more...

So beware.. A great dram when in the mood and not allergic for sulfur. Let it breath a while before starting.. And then you can expect a very decent Springbank dram!

Neck use of my mixed experience I midled my scores, could be 2 points up/down depending on the time I tasted it.

    Springbank 14 yo ‘Jazz Edition’
    (56%, OB 2010, 600 btl.)

Nose: the first few minutes it’s hard to get over the big matchstick notes, gunpowder and traces of rubber. Nothing dirty in my opinion but worth noting – it’s a bit too prominent maybe. Then some orange peel, dried apricot and heather. Earthy notes. A slight coastalness. Mouth: sweet, hot and a tad sharp at first, very peppery with the dried fruits on a second level. Plenty of spices and herbs with a little salt as well. Something rooty. Bitter oranges. A little resin. Water highlights the savoury notes and makes it a bit flat. Finish: medium length, dry with some ginger, herbs and liquorice.

Not bad but I’m not a fan of this type of Springbank / sherry combination. I’ve read it should recall the famous Springbank sherry style of the 1960’s but I don’t share that view.
    Around € 60.

    Score: 77/100

    Very nice!
    • Nose
The sherry cask makes the first big impact, but quite soon also the typical Springbank fruitiness kicks in and soon they're integrating very well. Bramble, prune, dark cherry, mango, mocha, strawberry, peat and goji berry. With water also apricot.
    • Taste
Dark cherry, prune, mocha, pepper, mango, strawberry, peat, cranberry and a light touch of sulphur.
    • Finish
Dark cherry, prune, cranberry, dark chocolate, mango, peat and a whiff of barley.

A must for a Springbank fan.  Recommended, if you can get a bottle. This is one of my top Springers.
    • Nose
Sherry wine. Cherries and plums. Wet wood. Diesel fuel. Hints of brine.
    • Taste
Sherried. Stewed dark fruits. Butter cake. Vanilla. Caramel and whipped cream. Black pepper.
    • Finish
Medium long and sweet. Ice cream. Peppery hot. Bubble gum.
