The nose was promising, but the taste somewhat ruined it
    • Nose
      88 88
Malt, haystack, grass, field flowers. Then gentle fruity notes and pleasant sweetness appear. Later oak and spices
    • Taste
      85 85
Harsh, spicy, acidic, creamy and lots of dark chocolate. Very alcoholic for its 46% and mouth burning
    • Finish
      85 85
Medium to long, very warming and spicy with lingering fruit

N: What I admire the most about Daftmill, and this one possesses it too, is just how vibrant and freshly clean-cut the fruitness – with a floral-candy quality – is. Behind that fruit composition is the soft mash, flour, & putty, and then you’re into the oils, fats, esters etc. Let’s not forget to mention a lactic quality which isn’t the funk of Ben Nevis nor the contemporary sour milkiness of say Cotswolds, but a creaminess akin to a cream tea maturing rapidly in the Cornish [or should that be Devonshire] August sun. In short, this is a vibrant contemporary small-holding farm whisky.

T: Crisp yet malleable, thinking it may be heading towards a floral Highland style, there’s this Bladnoch-esque mash bill base – and who said the regions were dead? Then there’s this particular toffee-d creaminess wrapped up within the mash & fruit complex alongside a somewhat astringent sour citric [lime/grapefruit/lemon juice] quality.

F: We are sat in between the fruits [dried sweet pink grapefruit and something of a drying papaya] and the grain mash by the finish, and something of ‘smooth’ confectionary [Kit-Kat wafer-sweet] caramel & soft milky toffees.

C: Slightly disappointed with this bottle when I first opened it [around 84 points], months later, it’s come through no end. A solid [relatively large-batch] Daftmill that isn’t inaccessible – £130 [from CYWL] for an occasional treat is ok in my book.

Maltose, wheat fragrance, sweet fragrance, honey, and alcohol are always a little disturbing. After waking up for a while, the taste of fragrant pears, the more you wake up, the sweeter it will be, and it will take some time.
    • Taste
      86 86
The overall taste is watery, with sweet and astringent green apples, straw, and a hint of pungency. After waking up, fruity notes, pomegranate pear juice, gradually obvious sweetness, and slightly bitter almonds in the latter part.
    • Finish
      80 80
Shorter, bitters of almond, a hint of tannin.

Ok, but not a purchase for me.
    • Nose

Some yellow fruits, apricots, mirabelle plums, and some menthol.
    • Taste
      83 83
Creamy start, some coconut, vanilla, almond and marzipan. Becomes a bit peppery
    • Finish
      82 82
The pepperiness subsides, floral notes flash, until everything collapses again in a woody, slightly astringent bitterness.

A rather inconspicuous whisky. Not bad. But without corners and edges. And zero in the finish. The hype surrounding this whisky is incomprehensible to me. And the price is too high. Half would be appropriate.

(Blind sample which was later resolved)
So it's not bad, but it's not worth 150 euros. My first Daftmill - I can't understand the hype. Well, a lot of that is still available; maybe explains something.
For me incredibly soft ironed, without corners and edges - you can like it well, but for the price I expect more, especially in the practically non-existent finish.
    [81 - 78 = 'ok' whisky -> but do I need a whole bottle?]
    • Nose
fine spice, fruity from yellow-red apple, young peach and ripe pear; Grapes. Vanilla and blossom honey.
      Marzipan with enough time.
    • Taste
extremely soft, fruity, slightly spicy; Marzipan, honey, caramel.
2nd Sip: again extremely soft, fruity, sweet, honey, caramel, some marzipan and delayed coconut; yeah, that's it.
    • Finish
gone incredibly fast. oak tannins. Frighteningly gone. I'm just feeling ripped off.

There is some kind of unhealthy hype in the whisky community around this distillery. Especially if you look at fairly young cask-strength single malt releases...for absolutely insane money...)
Everything that is written on the label is true. It is possible that despite the simplicity and good quality of whisky, there is a marketing veil, which, as for me, prevents the distillery from being truthful ( like Springbank )
Absolutely tannic bourbon whisky. Very simple and well made at the same time. The barrels of the first filling set the whole style and character of this drink.
The nose is sweet, lollipops and fruits, honey and some grass. Without development but stable - the same. Layers should not be required from this age.
It reminded me a lot of the style of serial Arran 10 years, or Glen Elgen's perfume-candy hints.
    When long breathing becomes simple.
The palate is pleasant, where the oak is wrapped in a sweet peppery sensation.
A slight herbal bitterness finish, which I like, plus pepper, oak, and alcohol flavor.
In general, it’s good, but again I repeat .. do not create an idol for yourself and you will find the path to the truth ...

Freshness woven from dried flowers, herbaceousness, quite rich taste, and a soft, even slightly watery aftertaste! A good summer dram to drink for every day!
And one more thing, - this whisky is not worth its money IMHO 200%, - The red price for it on the market day is about 50 euros, but that's another story ...

[June, 2022] When the Cuthbert Bros. started their Daftmill farm distillery they did everything right, obviously. They did not sell any underaged malt which often ruins the image of new distilleries for years to come because of its questionable quality, they choose on a trademark Lowland profile (which often comes close to my beloved Rosebank) and they focussed solely on quality instead of quantity. The results are astonishing: All their new releases are sold out quite fast and for serious bucks...

..just look at the release price of this 12-years old at the standard abv of 46%. But it is certainly worth it, provided you like subtle and delicate malt profile which do not bang their flavour spikes into your taste buds (like so many other modern releases). Otherwise shy away.
    • Nose
      89 89
The colour is yellow gold and the nose offers this complete spirit-driven profile of old-style drams which I adore so much. No, there are no spectacular aromas to discover but all impressions are delicious, interesting and in perfect balance. Nothing more to say, I like it! By the way, hurry up with your nosing sessions as this nose looses steam upon oxidation and flattens a little bit. Still it is nice but the first sniffs are much better.
    • Taste
      91 91
The taste is quite impressive for a 12-years old with tasty molten barley sugars combine with delicious fruits and spicy wooden notes to a perfect summer whisky (I know, this is the winter batch...). The woods are stronger than with the nose but this very welcomed to provide structure to the profile. Not a single off-note or imbalance that I can detect, this is flawless. Again, nothing spectacular about it and exactly this is absolutely spectacular (to me, only).
    • Finish
      91 91
The initial mouthfeel is excellent as usual with Daftmill, they really focus on a great spirit with a creamy and oily texture (they carefully select the cut-off points probably more narrow than most other distilleries). There is not a single distracting moment both in the mouthfeel and finish. Given the fine spirit's texture the finish is long and adds more old-style waxes and oily impressions which are a nice addition to the taste. Water is not needed.

Fruity and grassy. Honey, pineapple, peach, peppermint, star anise, vanilla, dough, tangerine peel and yogourt. On the second night of drinking the seasalt-zesty lemon-cream combo was impressively sharp.
    • Taste
      87 87
Spicy-honey arrival, with good texture and medium body. Ripen mellon, nectarine, vanilla pod, haribo and mild pepper attack. The oak bitterness was there, along with some spices of liquorice.
    • Finish
      87 87
Long finish, with spices and bourbony notes like coconut, oaks and vanilla. Metholated but also showing some gingers.

    • Nose
Fresh fruits with acacia honey and whipped cream, so no surprise here for me. I like it very much.
Heavier and sweeter on the nose than I expected. The nose doesn't change much with water.
    • Taste
Maybe a tad bit more oak than usually, but still quite fruity arrival. With water, a little white pepper comes out and a touch more dry oak on the finish.
    • Finish
Still a nice fruity finish with a bit more multifaceted nature than in previous releases.

Really pleasant dram, perhaps lacks a little complexity but true to the Lowland style throughout.
    • Nose
Fresh and vibrant lowland style, it's flat open fields filled with daisies and buttercups. Honeysuckle and notes of grassy fields, some vanilla and honey notes also creeping in. There is an aroma of malt lurking in the back, the longer you nose the more sweet notes of sherbet creep up.
    • Taste
Honey on arrival, quickly followed by malt flavors and porridge. There's a slight spice in the way of white pepper. Sweet honey flavors stay throughout the journey. After a while drier flavors make an appearance, im picturing of hay bales??
    • Finish
Finish is on the gentle and light side, here the honey has disappeared and leaves you with the aroma of malt.

    2006/2018 winter batch release 46% First fill bourbon 125177 - 88/86/87
A nice lemon & honey nose with some grassy notes
Palate is sweet with icing sugar & white fruits
Finish is ok, pleasantly warming, needs to be a little longer

    2008/2020 winter release 46% First fill bourbon 181940 - 86/90/89
The nose is not that expressive,
The palate is nicely honeyed, spicy and quite fat with it very nice
    Nice finish, remaining sweet.

In speyside they might call it slightly peated 2 -3 ppm but that is just the background phenols in the malt without any peat added?

    2009/2020 Summer release 46% 3 bourbon & 1 FF oloroso 171952 88/89/90
This has a zingy nose, lemon drizzle cake and cream is the order of the day here
    Quite expressive
The palate is fizzy, buttery, white fruits and a slightly industrial quality to it, a bit dirty if you like., then a white pepper note, plenty of power for 46%
The finish is pretty long, remaining sweet, it is obvious that the single oloroso butt adds an extra dimension to this dram compared to its bourbon only siblings at 46% but it does not make it better.

Vanilla custard and a floral note at first. A hint of pineapple. Green apples, but also green bananas. Freshly cut grass. Coconut in the back. Lemon peels and oranges. And the smell of a lovely freshly baked butter cake. Later also apricots.
    • Taste
Vanilla again and caramel fudge. Marzipan. Green bananas. Green apples and sweet ripe pears. A very light hint of pink grapefruit. Lemon drizzle cake and almonds. It’s slightly peppery towards the end.
    • Finish
Long with vanilla, green apples, a hint of pink grapefruit and a waxy note.

Nice, fresh whisky but a little bit overrated imo… Flipper-alert? :-)

Indeed to say that I am sat outside in the garden so nosing is not under the usual conditions and my aromatherapy senses might be a bit off, that is my excuse anyway :)
Massive cereal note hits you first then lemon rind & pith.sour dough bread, breadsticks, but then the lemon again but with an almost chemical side to it?
Mango appears next, and if other said ,Del Monte fruit cocktail full of pear, apple peach, mango that sums things up nicely, this is really expressive.

This has a syrupy sweetness about it on initial tasting and my first impression is a good one
This is really vibrant and also has heat in your throat.
Lemon sherbet sweets, puff pastry but the balance is not there, still a little raw for me, so will add a little water.
The sweetness reminds me of the coating on sugared almonds.
With water I think it is better, the hot alcohol harshness goes, pretty much everything else is the same but the fruit develops more on exotic summer fruits in syrup.
The palate is really fresh which gives the liquid and extra edge.
After 10 minutes with a little water, a spice note appears, almost peppery.

The jury is out here, there is a pleasant warmth to it but the fruit cocktail flavours have vanished, with water added.
I will try it neat again and with water.
ok so my first impression was wrong, the finish has an almost medicinal quality to it, no rough edges, very nice.
