dark fruits, chocolate, coffee, quite a modern style of sherry with the dreaded leather/sulphur notes although they are not that unpleasant and could also add a bit of complexity if you are fond of that style

This one definitely needs water to tame it, not loads but enough to take the harsh edge off so you can enjoy the fruity sherry much more, I particularly like the spice on this, the finish is the best part, well balanced.

I was on the fence initially, but this is one of these dark horses that starts off real inconspicuous only to get better and better every 5 minutes, and at the end you're won over completely.

Very dark color. Mahogany. Dirty copper. Very dense and oily. It looks beautiful in a glass.
    • Nose
Enjoyable. Sherry aromas. Sweet fruit. More dried later. Delicate notes of varnishes. Again, there is more sweetness like red fruit. A pinch of spices. Ginger. Raisins.
    • Taste
Sweetness. The nature of sherry. Sweet, red fruit. Then spices. Pepper, hot pepper. Lots of red fruit, sweet. Raisins.
    • Finish
Red fruit. Sweetness. Chocolate. Bitter at first, then milky, stuffed with cherries. Spices. Cinnamon. Long and full finish.

[July, 2021] Glentauchers is one of the most sought-after distilleries among blenders because it produces a very favourable malt with a thick, oily texture and a balanced profile without spikes (Blenders do not like bold flavour impressions with their base drams because these limit the possibilities to create a certain profile desired). There are not that many Glentauchers sherry cask maturations out there so I am very curious about this one...

...and this is a flawless and fine modern sherry maturation on par with the (average) quality of Glenfarclas' Family Casks. The nose is a little shy but both taste and finish are pretty good. Is the high price justified for a second-tier distillery? Well, I do not give a damn about the distillery's name if the quality is right and I guess most people would accept such a price for a 27-years old Family Cask gladly. But it all depends on what you are in for...

[August, 2021] I re-tasted this dram tonight and fully confirm my review and score. This is absolutely on par with many Glenfarclas Family Cask editions, no doubt.
    • Nose
      89 89
The colour is russetmuscat and the nose offers a modern sherry-driven profile comparable to some of the Glenfarclas Family Casks from around the same time. To be honest, in a blind setting I would have gone for the latter. The sherry is flawless and more of the herbal-spicy kind. The malt is clearly recognisable, but because Glentauchers does not offer a lot of easily identifiable trademark aromas it is hard to guess the distillery here. Nonetheless, a fine modern sherry nose.
    • Taste
      91 91
The taste is nicely layered with all three the malt-, sherry- and wooden flavours in fine balance. Certainly this was an Oloroso seasoned cask, and what a difference to the sherry maturations using cheap young-wine treated casks! This profile is truly complex with dozens of different flavours to discover (among them tasty fruits, coffee beans, almonds, hazelnuts and tobacco leaves), and it is layered and balanced (which is very hard to achieve with young wines). Chew it for a while to really unlock these fine impressions which take their time to enfold. This is both interesting to explore and dangerously quaffable to sip.
    • Finish
      91 91
The dram arrives warming and coating on the palate without distracting moments. The finish is long and offers (even) more of the fine sherry flavours like raisons, plums, and nuts which combine with the barley sugars to a tasty dark chocolatey final. There are no bitter or astringent moments until the very end. Some water turns the nose more punchy and the taste smooths and looses its layers (like so often). A further reduction flattens the dram, so I suggest to savour it neat.
