Complicated young taste bomb.. according to van Wees he would be at least 8 years old.. it is really an atypical glenfarclas
    • Nose
I added a few drops of water, the sherry barrels have an a-typical smell, it tends to tropical fruits, such as banana, peach, mango..
    • Taste
It really needs some water, because the alcohol is well present.. otherwise it will come in a bit harsh.. the taste eventually comes down to sherry.. but with a lot of sweetness of tropical fruits ... and not the coffee, raisins, dates like you would expect… with small sips you discover burnt sugar and the sherry profile emerges.. even cinnamon, candy come along
    • Finish
The finish is a bit short.. probably due to age.. it gets a bit spicy.. then some tannins from the barrel and then it sinks..

Glenfarclas and sherry casks share a story that spans across generations. In whatever way possible, you'd expect some of that influence when your Glenfarclas was matured in said sherry casks. It could be me, but would you indentify this as sherried when tasted blind? I would not.. In no means a bad dram though, just unexpected.

Thanks to Frans for the sample.
    • Nose
Interesting start; feels young with lots of cream, sawdust and malty notes. Do I perhaps have a Glenrothes in my glass? Anyways, there's apple skin, raisin, kiwi, blueberry, rose water, sultana, dark chocolate, sticky toffee pudding, creme brulee, burnt bread, walnut, pencil shaving, saw dust, dried paprika, wood polish and something metallic. I wonder how old/young this actually is. The casks must've been refill or at least a little tired. Not bad in any form although not my preferred style.
    • Taste
Creamy, malty and not so sherried unfortunately. Throws a good punch though with its alcohol heat.. There's apple, blood orange, raspberry, kiwi, rose water, banana candy, assorted chocolate, butterscotch, flat cola, creme brulee, walnut, cruesli, new oak and accompanying wood polish.
It tastes like a regular ex-bourbon whisky with just a shimmer of sherry influence.. I'm certain there is a disappointed crowd out there. Not a fan either when you expect something else. Reminds me of a 'plain' hoggy Glenlossie (WBID:190188).
    • Finish
Medium to long. Turns a little bitter with assorted dried fruits, salted caramel, butterscotch, old honey, tonic water, pepper and some cinnamon.

The whisky is surprisingly well balanced, although it has an alcoholic feel. But with this voltage it is acceptable. The taste is a sherry bomb with chocolate-vanilla aftertaste.
A drop of water (and how desirable it is), makes whisky very delicate, alcohol completely imperceptible, but a lot of new flavors, raspberry, blackberry and honeycomb. For the price of 40 € it is a great proposition for a small sip every day.

quite intense, plum, sherry, raisins, cocoa, alcohol
    • Taste
      85 85
sweet, milk chocolate, raisins, vanilla, ripe cherries, plum jam, pepper
    • Finish
      85 85
medium, sugar, sweet sherry, a warming tip with a hint of dark chocolate and delicate bitterness

Smell: medium, very fruity bouquet, German. Apricot, behind it orange liqueur, the youth flashes slightly alcoholic - but never unpleasant through, oak spice in the base, Grand Marnier, waxy, showing relatively little depth, vanilla

Taste: medium body, present alcohol, again on the yellow / orange fruity side, the 55% are well integrated despite everything, again German. Fruit brandy notes, medium-long, spicy bitter aftertaste,

Color: brightening copper gold, medium. WR, of course

Conclusion: the youth (unfortunately) send their regards, nice to drink Glenfarclas, whose biggest competition comes from the own house - because the partly German. older standards are almost bargain-priced - nevertheless a candidate to experience the distillery character without barrel make-up ....!

Not a straightforward GF. But a decent one, for a decent price.
    • Nose
Little aggressive at first. Quite an influence of the sherry casks, without becoming a bomb. There is fresh cut grass and some spice here.
    • Taste
Sweet and spicy. Some briny notes. Then a burst of the sherry casks, the sweet type. There is some vanilla and some old spice in here.
    • Finish
Medium length. A bit dry. Some chalk, quite a sweet aftertaste from the sherry casks.

    Trial Olympics 2022 sample 10

Smell: Red fruit, creamy, strawberry jam, figs, stewed pears and also spicy with cinnamon and Camille. Breakfast cereals.
Taste: oranges, sweet, also some wood, later the fruit comes out much more.
Finish: Bitter from the wood and dry, dark chocolate, does not linger long.

    • Nose
Yellow raisin, sweet caramel, black tea and a growing maltiness.
    • Taste
Spicy in a youthful way. Even maltier than the nose. Peach, apple, caramel, honey and a light grassy touch. Exposed to air for a while, it gets a touch of pudding which somehow reminds me of ex-bourbon.
    • Finish
More of the same but less complexity.

This Glenfarclas was a bit atypical for this distillery. The youth was quite present in both the nose and the taste. An intriguing Glenfarclas with which you can experiment quite a bit.
