Now had it twice in the glass.
As a constant companion of this distillery, this is a "must try" for me, but I like the classic releases 1-3 a lot better.
I find the high alcohol percentage negative in this case, as if it were taking away the space for the whisky to develop.

Trying the Adelphi bottling of the SMWS bottlings is still pending.
    • Nose

The first nose is surprising, which is mainly due to the barrel strength. Intense and rather smoky, the alcohol is very dominant. I would be more blind on an island, although a peninsula is not far from it.
Notes of citrus fruits, wet sawdust, an open paint bucket, mineral and reminiscent of a ripe Riesling.
The youth is here, harmony smells different. Here you have a rather boisterous coastline in the glass, salty spray, a peach in the background, hints of honey.

With water it becomes more accessible and there are floral aromas, grass, green peppers, cucumber water, sancerre.
It also gains in sweetness, it becomes much more balanced and round.
    • Taste
      85 85
Strong on the tongue, hot and alcoholic. Not a pleasant first contact.
After a short time the wood will feel bitterness. Ashy and dry.

Yes, the water opens a lot here. Even if the alcohol is still clearly noticeable, it now shows a finely matured young whisky, but for me it has a bit too much bitterness and should be a bit more flattering.
    • Finish
      83 83
Short to medium length, cold smoke.
      Easy.

Nose: cherry jam and soft butter on an almond croissant, vanilla Prairie Girl cupcake with white icing and sprinkles; juicy fruits like apples and pears, dried banana note and a hint of lemon citrus. I'm not a huge lover of buttery chardonnays, but when it comes to using their casks for whisky maturation, back up the truck

Palate: really oily, heavy mouthfeel, more soft butter on croissant, red fruits, strawberry, jammy cherry, muted cloves
Finish: long sweet finish with some mentholated or minty notes.

Comment: This was great, and it took to water fine, which is good as it's 57.6% ABV. This is a big whisky, but one that you can enjoy in a flight if you're breaking out some bottles after a nice dinner. Solid addition to the shelf and looking forward to more from this distillery.

The palate couldn't keep up. I thought it was just a tad too hot, and not as elegant as the nose was, which was quite something.
    • Nose
It's sweet and silky initially with touches of buttermilk biscuits and yeasty dough, but also guava, Chardonnay, grape must, hay and plenty of cereals, as well as ripe banana and syrup-y pancakes. A really pleasant, sophisticated experience.
    • Taste
Creamy, almost oily mouthfeel. The arrival is somewhat astringent, with quite some oak spices and ginger. Fairly herbacious too. Minerals aplenty. It benefits from some water, opening things up to green grapes, apricots, lemons and tobacco.
    • Finish
Long, spicy, gingery and ending on lingering orchard fruits.

    This was pretty weird.

his cask was incredibly herbal, which was not bad, but the honey and saltwater marsh notes were particularly odd. It reminded me a lot of the Sheep Dung smoked single malt produced by Iceland’s Flokì. While I understand some casks of Flokì can be pretty nice, my bottle was wild— not pleasant to drink, though fun to share with friends. Some of the root vegetables, earth, and herbal notes on this reminded me of that Icelandic single malt. The Ardnamurchan never entirely became “plastic wrapped microwaved carrot” weird, but this was not something I would ever pull off the shelf to drink.

    Mental Image: Cottage Garden Dinner
    • Nose
Herbal, salty, and earthy. Immediate herbal punch with mint, basil, oregano, along with fenugreek and fennel root. Background notes of graham crackers, unripened fruits, and root vegetables. Slightly salty and sweet with tidal marshes, honey, and rotting oak.
    • Taste
Medium-bodied with sharp herbal notes along with honey, salt, and vanilla. Bunches of herbs popped right away with tarragon, mint, marjoram, basil, and oregano before slightly sweet herbal roasted root vegetables; carrots, parsnips, and potatoes came to mind. Butter, honey, and arugula sprouts (or clovers) appeared at the end with hints of tidal marshes and cured vanilla beans.
    • Finish
      Lingering earth and vanilla.

      Blind sample:

      Colour:
      Dark gold

      Nose:
Starts with alcohol. Then sweetish, vinous notes and a little bit of solvent. I think the colleague is not that old yet. Comes out of the glass very impetuously. Which I don't find negative now. Totally reminds me of Ahoibrause with a woodruff flavor. Behind that I find essential oils and a slightly artificial conifer aroma. I'll leave it ...
With a little time in the glass, the alcohol evaporates (: D). Now the flavors are somehow easier to grasp. Straw and dried herbs. The colleague now seems a bit dustier. Nevertheless, a certain sweetness remains at the start. Something like raspberry sugar. Some liquorice and a few toasted aromas. The alcohol now cools the nose slightly and something like menthol candy is added.
      I like it.
With a few drops of water, the essential oils and the conifer aroma come through stronger.
    • Taste
Spicy, powerful start. He's got a bang. He's about to fire off a peppery charge. A metallic undertone joins it right away. In the taste, the sweet raspberry pushes through behind the alcohol. I think he needs a bit of water.
With a few drops of water, the brute goes back a little. In return, the colleague becomes more mineral. Plus more grain notes. It's like bread that you chew for too long. Some honey comes through behind it. A bit of Mirabelle schnapps is still making its way through. Otherwise I find the aromas difficult to grasp in the taste.
    • Finish
Medium length. First that “barren” again, then a trace of cocoa and subtle sweetness.

One of the most characterful whiskys I have ever drunk. Unused and fresh on the nose, the palate has a very pleasant and dominant sweet honey note, which dissolves full of character. Wonderful. Gladly more of it, anytime
