Enveloping gunpowder and leather, reminding of an old school earthy Sherry profile. High quality.

Hazelburn 15yo Fresh Oloroso Cask Online Tasting Week 2021 54.9%

Huge sherry cask influence, dried fruit, dark fruit, blackberries, leather, a bit sulphury and caramel. Dry, dark chocolate, coffee at the end.

Strong sherry cask nearly takes everything. But you still can feel a few Hazelburn DNA inside.

  6. whistleky scored this whisky 85 points Newbie

Tasted from the official sample. Very nice nose dominated by classic oloroso notes with just a bit of musty overtone. Sweet and drying, perfectly balanced. Taste is ok but nothing spectacular. Very smooth for the abv, it strikes me as a well aged Oloroso single cask with little to no spice, much like the ones from Deanston or Glen Garioch. However there is no funkiness, sadly. A bit too one-dimensional I must say.

This is a really nice classic sherry malt but it doesn't strike me as particularly Hazelburn as the distillate is far too influenced by the cask. Still much better value than the outrageous Springbank 8 tasting week bottle imo.

Absolutely a must buy at the issue price of £85, but we all know it's simply impossible to "cop" a special release Springbank products at retail price nowadays. Such a shame...

I really like it, it's almost drinkable
Only add water drop by drop
it's not dirty but rather in the direction of putrid-musty
    • Nose
Sherry, mini smoke, sweetness, oak, tobacco, sweet red berries, earthy, light paper, later leather and briefly a cheesy note
      with water: nutty, more leather

from the 1920s: Sherry fits, old wood, a little sharpness from alcohol, vanilla and a note that I cannot name
with water: dirty, more of the cheesy note
    • Taste
      creamy, full, strong
Raisins, alcohol, old sherry, spicy, oak, nutty, old wood (really great)

with water: leather, light tobacco, very spicy, roasted grain
    • Finish
      medium to long
Oak, very spicy, tart, sherry, espresso (bitter), larger dark fruit

with water: musty, leather, chocolate ~ 75%

Tasting notes based on a 2cl sample from the "Springbank New and Forthcoming Releases - Virtual Tasting 2021" tasting pack. This was pleasant to drink, but was completely dominated by the Oloroso sherry casks. In a blind tasting I might have even guessed this was a sherry based on the nosing...
    • Nose
      87 87
Dominated by Oloroso sherry. Some fresh cut flowers underneath. Slight dark chocolate and cherry note. Mint, aloe vera.
    • Taste
      88 88
Rich chocolate, syrup, fudge, treacle. Not much distillery character. Cherry flavour coming though, with what appears to be slight smokiness (although this is a Hazelburn?)
    • Finish
      88 88
Thick and oily. Very long, with some green herbs, and sweet nuts (rather like a Snickers or a Daim bar)

  11. Tommyknocker scored this whisky 88 points Expert Senior

Nose slightly dirty, musty, but otherwise dark, fruity, chocolatey sherry. Then more salt and some springbankness in the mouth. Full and tasty! No barrel beats Springbank. Proven again.

This a good sherry whisky. You have dry fruits, raisins and toffee. On the taste it's repeats with some old cellar moist. Finish long with ginger and leather , maybe just a little to bitter?!

    • Taste

Starts of powerfull. Kicks in with raisins and chocolate. Then caramel a bit of leather and wood
    • Finish
      88 88
Spicy, peppery finish turns into chocolate and back to dry/tannines

  16. Tom na Gruagaich scored this whisky 85 points Connoisseur

It takes time to generate a little more fruit from the dry Oloroso. To be honest, I have seldom smelled and tasted such direct Oloroso Sherry flavors in a whisky. The Hazelburn is ironed out of the barrel.

Hazelburn and sherry always go well together and always remind me of the few Springbanks from days gone by.
    • Nose
      91 91
Dark chocolate, light wood fire, lots of dry sherry, raisins, leather, a good load of tannins, hot chocolate
    • Taste
      92 92
Creamy and chocolatey, then the oak comes with a lot of spice and pressure on the tongue, the chocolate becomes more and more intense and astringent, but at the same time it also becomes creamier
    • Finish
      88 88
Slightly bitter, but very tasty with a lot of chocolate and oak spice, warming in the finish, but rather only medium-long

Released for the Online Tasting Week 2021. I think of this like the yearly sherried Hazelburn special releases but given a couple more years to age. Value (£85.00) - 6/10
    • Nose
The nose has classic Oloroso sherry influence with Morello cherries, dried figs and plums. What helps it stand out is a dark, damp, dunnage funk note that I really enjoy, quite like an oak cupboard in a cellar somewhere. Theres some sweeter notes of toffee apples and also some dark chocolate in the background. A decent amount of ginger and cinnamon spice gives it a kick on the nose.
    • Taste
Initially sweet and spicy on the arrival. Burnt caramel and toffee candies with dried ginger and some oak tannins. Then those dried fruits kick in, again cherries, musty grapes and plums. Develops into more bitter dark cocoa notes with plenty of oak spice. Some drying leather and orange peels.
    • Finish
The finish is long and warming, very nice indeed. It retains that ginger spice from the palate and drying tannic quality but balances it out quite well with a good amount of honeyed sweetness. In addition, that dunnage warehouse note returns here for one last hurrah!

    • Nose
      90 90
Initially strongly musty, woody and mineral on the nose - "musty oak cupboard in the damp cellar vault". With raisins, rum pot, cranberries, pickled cherries, dark chocolate, nougat, spicy honey, a kind of malt sweetness (like roasted malt)
    • Taste
      89 89
Peppery-sweet start, tobacco and some leather, here again slightly mineral notes, moist moss, oranges, preserved berry puree, raisins, nutmeg, allspice
    • Finish
      88 88
At least medium length, initially sweet, increasingly astringent, lightly burnt caramel, cocoa, wood spice, removes red fruits

  25. Whiskylifestyle scored this whisky 88 points Expert Senior

    • Nose
Quite some chocolate at first. Some leathery notes. Dried fruit, with mostly raisins. But also blackberries. Then it goes towards honey and a hint of caramel. Followed by hazelnuts and lemons. Nougat here as well. Then oranges. And later also a farmyard note and Earl Grey tea.
    • Taste
Dark chocolate again, mixed with blackberries. Caramel. Tobacco leaves and a hint of leather. Followed by honey. Oranges. And in the end, some spices, such as black pepper, nutmeg and a pinch of cinnamon. A touch of oak too.
    • Finish
Mid-long to long with the same spices. A touch of oak and leather. Cacao and caramel. Slightly dry.

From the whole Online week 2021 series this Hazelburn has the most complex and beautiful nose and has that dirtiness that SB misses in the series.
Although this is a nice dram, it's still a bit too sherried for us. We compared it with Hazelburn Oloroso 13, which is maybe less complex but the sherry is better integrated
    and thus we prefer 13y.

For friends of the slightly rotten Oloroso sherry barrel taste, it is definitely a feast. Nothing for every day, but there are days when such a nasty bob comes at the right place.
    • Nose
      88 88
An absolute sherry board with raisins, grapes, black cherries, dark chocolate, toffee. In addition, musty wood and cellar todder - the full range. Hazelburn is hardly to be seen here, however.
    • Taste
      89 89
Appropriately powerful start. Very sweet, almost syrupy thick on the tongue. Raisins, dried dates and figs, tobacco and leather notes, marzipan, nougat. Then there are also a few mineral notes that suggest its origin (and now, once tasted, it has more Springbank / Hazelburn than before). Damp forest floor, musty cellar with scruffy wooden shelves, preserved, slightly fermented fruit.
    • Finish
      88 88
Medium length, still slightly creamy, hardly dry. If you only smelled the musty cellar in your nose and on the palate “from above”, you have now gone down the stairs in the exit and are now right in the middle of the Driss. Oh yes, there they are, the preserving jars that should have been disposed of for a long time.

Yes officially released for 85£, but when shipped to Germany and you include the outrageous shipping fee, mandatory import duty because of Brexit and German vat and 15€ mandatory DHL handling fee plus credit card fees etc you end around 120€ with some rounding... Just saying, but needs to be considered.

Beautiful light, fresh and fruity Hazelburn. Oloroso supports the profile and is not overwhelming.

Release price (85 pounds) is really bang for your buck. Too bad I could only get a hold of a sample through the secondary market.
