This is exactly why I'm always a bit holding back with whisky's on a port (or wine) cask. It's not all bad, but somehow there's often something undefinable in it, which prevents it for me to give it a better score.
Nice to have tried this one, but no complete bottle for me.
    • Nose
      82 82
Fruity, strong alcohol, prunes, spicy, pepper, cinnamon, ginger.
    • Taste
      83 83
Strong, pepper. Fruity and sweet, some honey. Spicy again, pepper and cinnamon. Later on some red wine-like thing, and things are getting smoother now.
    • Finish
      83 83
Still strong, sweet, honey, tingling and spicy. Then it's getting warming, more intense. Some red wine left. Pretty long.

  2. Calmar scored this whisky 86 points Connoisseur

It is difficult to say, as in the case with the sotern finish, the barrel suppressed the base, but in this case everything is very unbalanced - the fragrance is poor, the taste / aftertaste is crushed by port; for me, as a lover of the port, is of some interest, hence the somewhat overrated score; not port enthusiasts would not recommend it.
    • Nose
A mixture of heavy, raw ruby with mineral tones, as if a bottle of port was dropped on a dusty paving block, berry jam, raisin water, in general it is quite simple and unpretentious.
    • Taste
Porto (rather tawny), raisins, oak, everything is powerful and rich, dried fruits, boiled sugar.
    • Finish
Pepper, sweetness, a lot of sweets, raisin water, a little bit of bitterness, a feeling that I drank a clean port with a correction for the fortress.

A strong whisky where there is a lot to discover and the cask strength is good to face - 16.08.2015
    • Nose
Port wine, mulled wine, grape, spices, nuts. With the addition of water, citrus fruits appear
    • Taste
Light sweetness, dried fruit, strong alcohol but not disturbing, oily, spicy, bitter chocolate
    • Finish
      Lang

Nose: Very sweet nose, a bit more woody and must than the previous two. With water: quite a bit of cinnamon emerges. which is nice.

Palate: Spicy, sugary with a lot of dried fruit and cinnamon.

Finish: Milk Chocolate, and ending a bit woody.

  7. KayMeertens scored this whisky 82 points Connoisseur

Blind tasting of a sample. 82/83.

Later compared it to the Amarone Cask Finish. The basis seems the same, but in this one the finish seems more like a cover-up of an immature whisky.
    • Nose
Caramel, fig, mango, apricot, yellow raisin, apple syrup, hazelnut, milk chocolate and orange. Slightly meaty as well. With water some plum.
    • Taste
Caramel, yellow raisin, milk chocolate, fig, cherry and barley. Again a very light meaty touch, which turns into toffee when adding water.
    • Finish
Toffee, yellow raisin, milk chocolate, barley, fig, cherry and smoke.

  9. GlenSikkes did not rate this whisky Connoisseur

After initially maturing in traditional oak casks for approximately 8 years, the Arran Single Malt in this bottling was finished in the highest quality Port wine casks from an artisan producer of this iconic Portuguese fortified wine . Our Master Distiller, James MacTaggart, has carefully monitored this period of secondary maturation to ensure the perfect balance is struck between the Port casks and the intrinsic sweet-fruity character of The Arran Malt. The end result is a Single Malt full of charm, complexity and quality and an extremely popular part of our range.

    Tasting notes by Arran
    • Nose
Vanilla spice and ripe citrus running into dried fruits and nuttiness. With a splash of water more depth of mandarin citrus with fudge and honeyed notes.
    • Taste
Layered fruits and spice combine, with cinnamon baked apple wrestling with raisin and plum pudding. The dram opens out to reveal warming barley and a hint of sweet pear.
    • Finish
A classic Single Malt with punch that dances on the palate. The trademark Arran barley-sweetness shines through the layers of complexity.
