Too Winey for me, totally kills the distillate. In addition the whisky became murky and tasted off in some way.

The bottle is full of sediment, it is/appears not to be a residue from the cask but a sticky fine substance which is very fine and makes the whisky super cloudy after shaking the bottle. After a day this is caked on the bottom again
    • Nose
      As, rook, rood fruit
    • Taste
Sharp, too young in my opinion, the port is clearly noticeable in the red fruit, also the red fruit, the peat remains present
    • Finish
      Long, sweet and sharp aftertaste

Not so long ago (March 2020) I tasted the Caol Ila Smoke & Sherry from The Cooper's Choice, just like this one a NAS Caol Ila matured on sherry cask. I expect that this Sweet & Smoky – also at cask strength – will be of the same quality. Cooper's Choice is a label of the Vintage Malt Company. The pink appearance of this dram is due to the finish on a Ruby Port Pipe.

Let me start by saying that Caol Ila's DNA is already unmistakable. Seaweed, stockfish, citrus, sweet and sour peat, all fine. A sauce of red fruit was poured over it, it seems. Strawberries, raspberries and something sweet... think red lace candy. There are also some dirty notes. Think cowhide, smoked ham, roast beef and cloves. It works like a charm.

Soft and creamy, despite the not inconsiderable ABV. It is a battle of sweet versus salty, while at the same time a considerable smoke development develops. Red fruit in the form of strawberry jam goes up against lacquered ribs on the BBQ, cloves and – don't laugh – rhubarb jam. How tasty and complex this is. But midpalate Caol Ila itself steps in to put the finishing on it with a big salty touch. I would almost forget to mention the spiciness, but it is grand: cloves, oregano and a big pinch of table salt. It goes up and down between sweet and salty like a yo-yo.

The finish is excellent. It lasts forever and keeps the middle ground between salty and sweet, while the smoke constantly lingers.

Wow, just wow. Thank you, Benny, for the sample.

After being opened, the bottle became acidic and full of sediment. It's like dirt. Impossible to drink.

Appearance: Medium pale copper towards salmon colour.
Nose: Recogniseable Caol Ila ashy smokiness, also fatty oily notes (almost the classic Caol Ila bacon notes) and leather. Vinous notes of dark blue plums and hefty red wine (or Port). (88p)
Taste: The arrival is fruity, sooty and rather dry. Not much overt Port sweetness here. On the mid palate there is a bit more sweetness, with licorice, aniseed, black pepper and a little plum jam. (86p)
Finish: Mainly licorice and pepper with some underlying sweet fruitiness. Rather long. (85-86p)
Overall: A nice but not fantastic wine cask finished Caol Ila. Takes water quite well. Fairly young I'd say, perhaps 7-8 years?. Total score: 86 (87) points.

    • Nose
Dominican cigar, port casks, dark raisins, deep full-bodied grape (Tuscan, Multipulciano), oregano.
    • Taste
Flat, dried meat, dry aged meat (Summer language).

beautiful color with a beautiful red hue
smoke in the nose, port, a little petrol
taste intense, smoky, ripe plum and completely balanced. alcohol certainly not too present

The color in the glass is really sick. Rosé wine with copper tones.

Nose: sour-sweet port wine, smoke, fried bacon, walnut. The alcohol is very well integrated.

Palate: Intense but not biting. Very pleasant mouthfeel. Incidentally, I have the same aromas as in the nose, although the walnut is already overripe here.

Finish: Long with sour wine, smoke and overripe walnuts.
