    St Fergus
The new Blaasveld Broek whisky from Stokerij De Molenberg is a standard expression, which means always available. Blaasveld Broek itself is a 160ha nature reserve that is bursting with marsh and where peat was cut until the 18th Century. That's a bit misleading when you know that the peated malt that was used for this expression actually comes from the St Fergus maltsters in Aberdeen, Scotland. The barrels used are a combination of first fill bourbon barrels and the so-called Anker casks.
On the nose I get young yellow apples, gooseberries, lime and some vanilla. Make that crème brûlée. The peat is very discreet and reminds me more of burning a Christmas tree. Obviously young stuff, but nothing wrong with it.
Nice and oily, but immediately very sweet. Vanilla and apples, as well as a scoop of granulated sugar with a hint of honey. The smoke development is considerable. Light maritime notes, even. But in all honesty fairly one-dimensional.
As far as I'm concerned, the finish could have been a bit longer. He reminds me more of grappa now.
About 50 EUR. Not bad, don't get me wrong. But for that money I’ll just buy myself a 70cl bottle of Caol Ila 12. Thank you for the sample, Dieter!

My first Golden Carolus, and I must say that it's a pretty nice first meeting. Fruity, a nice spicy touch, a touch of peatiness. I directly got some associations with the Isle of Skye blend, so actually some Talisker kind of style. Pleasant experience for sure.

Very fruity, citrus, lemon, ripe fruits, apples. Some orange, some floral notes. Vanilla like sweetness. Some alcohol, but not disturbing. A little whiff of smoke appears later on. Then some kind of berries. Smokiness increases in time, some salty touch as well.
    • Taste

Pretty smooth now, spicy, a subtle peaty touch, pepper. Fruitiness, orange. Pretty full bodied. Also some orange zest. Also some salty, maritime influence.
    • Finish

Still pretty smooth, some ripe fruits, orange. Again a touch of peat and ashy, and salty. Middle long finish, some bitterness arrives as well.

Pours a very light gold. Scent is mild, yet noticable and recognizable peat. Taste is rather full, soft on the booze. Rather sweet, sharp peat. Very balanced. Easy whisky, even though it's peated - this is probably a great starting point for the big audience.

'Blaasveld Broek' refers to the beautiful nature reserve 'Het Broek' next to Stokerij De Molenberg in Blaasveld. For centuries peat (dried peat) was extracted there, which at the time mainly served as fuel for local residents and also for drying barley malt. The local tradition of peat extraction is given a new chapter with this expression. Gouden Carolus Blaasveld Broek is distilled from a special composition
brew with peated barley malt. This gives this yellow gold whisky a soft smoked touch, in combination with full-bodied aromas of oak and vanilla.
