  1. Jan B. scored this whisky 90 points Expert Junior

Fantastically voluminous, oily and classic Mortlach, which has everything that I love about the distillery character. Very mature and elegant for a 12 year old, feels a lot older! Powerful and complex. Delicate borbonn notes, white nougat, hazelnuts, liquorice, mint, yellow fruits, with perfectly integrated alcohol. Very long, dynamic finish with herbs, spices and chocolate. Incidentally, a top PLV that is rare today. This year my best malt under 100 €!

  2. Astrid scored this whisky 87 points Connoisseur

In addition to all the beautiful flavors of Mortlach distillate and barrel wood, the bourbon influence is a bit too obvious for my taste.
    • Nose
Sweet vanilla and white oak, banana, biscuit and nougat, pineapple and nectarine, oily with pine needles and resin, nutmeg and clove, wood dust, liquid honey, white chocolate, apple and pear, a touch of solvent, a little orange
    • Taste
tingling and spicy with dry white oak, clove and cinnamon, cedar and walnut, barley malt with the delicate bitterness of dark chocolate, sweet vanilla, apple and honey, pine needles, white chocolate, oily and fleshy, hazelnut, banana, a dollop of honey, slightly tart orange
    • Finish
Blossom honey and again American oak, very fleshy and slightly grassy, apple, pine needles, almonds, nutmeg and cinnamon, oil and resin, cedar wood, dark chocolate and malt

Addendum December 31, 2021 - after countless Signatory 2021 bottlings in the last few days, based on the original price of this Mortlach, I am of the clear opinion that this is the bottling of the year from Signatory Vintage, if you include the price-performance ratio.
One thing is clear: there were qualitatively better bottlings, but these are immensely more expensive and in general it should be noted that 2021 was a bad year for Signatory in terms of quality.

The antipode to the current sherry hype in the whisky community. A well-made, exciting drop with a good PLV

Immediately after pouring, a hint of campfire with citrus fruits in it. Yellow fruits (kumquats), notes of honey and heather
    • Taste
      86 86
Slightly spicy, fruity and even rounder with 2.3 drops of water. Sweet pepper
    • Finish
      88 88
Nice barrel-driven long finish, but not overly spicy. You can still taste the oak for a long time

superb mortlach profile, delicious bourbon casks marriage. not as sweet as some other SV bourbon barrels i tried, i like it.
i completely go with Jan and his review. in addition i think it’s beautiful to play with some water and get more different expressions. feels definitely older than 12 years for me.
as the actual market prices rise, this is something with good value.

A Mortlach that has not officially been for sale in the Netherlands.

Instead of the sherry hype, I bought it on ex-bourbon barrels, in Germany. After this whisky was noticed by the public, the providers on Whiskybase disappeared very quickly. It is recommended to buy it, if you can still find it, especially if you are tired of sherry and you really appreciate Mortlach.
    • Nose

A nice balance between the Mortlach spirit and the bourbon barrels used. Vanilla, sulfur, hazelnuts, cloves and wet wood. Pear, Granny Smith, burnt sugar, orange zest, pineapple juice, a small pepper and peach pastry.
    • Taste
      88 88
Vanilla, white pepper, sulfur, pear, pineapple, Pink Lady apples, peach pastry and white grape. pure bourbon,
    • Finish
      88 88
Bourbon, vanilla, honey, orange peel, overripe kiwi and notes of pear and apples. Don't forget the inside of the pineapple, white grapes and peach.

Extremely well matured and fairly priced.

Without a doubt the most Bourbon-y nose I've ever had from a non-American whisky. Only the comparably light color confuses. The taste brings you back to Scotch Singe Malt. Very intense and concentrated almost like syrup with a noticeable high abv alcohol note. Going to suspend my rating for now as the bottle has just been opened and def needs time and air to take away the initial spikes. But nonetheless if you are experienced you notice from the start the inherent quality. Wether it'll turn out to be a (very) good or a great 12 yo time will tell. I'll be back... ;-)

    2021-05-25 Update
While it did not become epic, it's a fun experience and a good intense bourbon cask. 88p will do. Btw. Up until now it does not swim so well after all, alcohol keeps stinging a bit and what you gain by opening some flavors up you lose on others. Also, what I cannot spot are any Mortlach-typical umami notes. Not a detriment in my eyes, just saying. ;-)

Delicious bourbon barrel maturation at a quite fair price for a vase these days.

Superb expression of a typical Mortlach distillery profile! Its wonderful balanced and has all the pros of Bourbon cask maturation and the meaty Mortlach style. Great stuff!
