Whisky Reviews for Ledaig 2010 Earl

5 users have left a review for this whisky and scored it an average of 86.75 points

    COLOUR: white wine

    - a very good and interesting whisky from the
    island of Mull
    - in a blind tasting I would have guessed Islay directly
    (similar to a classic Ardbeg, but is
    more voluminous and definitely at least 1 point better)
    - at 90€ maybe a bit too expensive
    • Nose
      strong, smoky, nice first impression, smoke pleasantly integrated into a sweetish background, lemon, herbs, smells very similar to the Ardbeg TEN
    • Taste
      without water: very powerful, smoky attack, alcohol surprisingly well integrated, you can also drink it neat (surprisingly well), surprisingly sweet bourbon (little to no trace of sherry), lemon, cold smoke, herbs;

      with W.: becomes significantly smokier (much more cold, bitter smoke), less creamy, less aromatic, tastes better without water (even in terms of the percentage!).
    • Finish
      medium length strong finish ;
      very long smoky aftertaste

    If you want to taste the Ledaiggrund character, you've come to the right place. But almost nothing comes out of the cask that suggests sherry maturation.

    intense, very smoky and simply good - in a blind tasting I would have classified it as an Islay malt - the sherry barrels remain completely hidden from me!
    [Color:] = white wine;
    • Nose
      83 83
      very sweet, intense cold smoke, citrus fruits, herbs, some alcohol;
    • Taste
      84 84
      mW: strong, sweet start, creamy, malty, aromatic, cold smoke, ash, herbs (rosemary);
    • Finish
      84 84
      quite long, creamy, the smoke lingers for a long time!

    Ledaig 2010 - 2020, 9 years, 59.2% alc. Bottler: Earlskine. Expansion: sherry barrel

    Nose: Unmistakably a Ledaig. Lots of peat smoke paired with cowshed, dirty straw, burnt grass. Crispy fried bacon, various red barbecue sauces and fruity pears and citrus aromas in the background. In addition, a cool freshness throughout, like from ice candy.

    Palate: As expected, very strong, a lot of malt and roasted aromas, burnt pizza dough. In addition, a lot of ham and pork belly, followed by a little hotter spices. Pepper, a little ginger, coffee beans, a mild hint of cocoa, currants.

    Finish: Very long, tingling and with a full emphasis on smoke and pepper. Here the musty cowshed comes to the fore again. Also some pipe tobacco.

    Conclusion: young, very smoky, stormy and cask strength. The sherry barrel has not yet had much influence on the whisky, which in turn leaves more space for the smoky / musty Ledaig character. Recommended bottling. 86/100 points (2021)
