I only had a sample if this new 12 YO (coming from the 10) and honestly it was a wee bit disappointing and uneventful.

NOSE: Initially malty and sweet. Butter malt. Then fruity notes take over with sweet yellow and green apples, greengage, green grass, fruit drops / candies and a hint of woodsmoke. Also the slightest hint of sweet Ledaig engine oil funk. (89p) With a few drops of water initially a little duller on the nose, before picking up and returning to fruitiness later. (88p)
TASTE: On the arrival sour-sweet green fruitiness. On the mid palate fresh, very fruity, very mineral, acidic. Medium bodied. Lovely (88-89p) With a few drops of water it initially loses a little energy and becomes drier, a bit duller and a more wood peppery before picking up again and returning to fruitiness later. (87p)
FINISH: Fruity, greengage, green gooseberry, kiwi fruit. (88p)
OVERALL: A lovely fruity, juicy, mineral, sour-sweet malt whisky! Doesn't benefit from adding water. Total score 88 (89) points.

Aroma: fresh, apricot, honey, caramel, cereals, bran bread, oatmeal. After standing for a while, the apricot intensifies, more like apricot jam, wax, honeycombs, spicy pickle with herbs, sawdust, light minerality.

Taste: spices, cinnamon, ginger, cloves, apricot jam, caramel, wax, vanilla, peel bitterness.

Finish: Caramel, herbal tea, cloves, ginger, orange peel, medium length, though fairly light.

    Score: 85

Bottom line: apricot-honey whisky, I really liked it, dense and interesting. Unlike the previous 10-year-old, it has lost its island character, as for me, it has become more dessert.

The 12-year-old standard bottling from the core range of the distillery on the Isle of Mull. Uncolored and unfiltered with decent age, the color matching the cask composition is a nice golden color - this could be in an interesting whisky. On the other hand, it also ages in Virgin Oak. Does it have to be that way?

    • Nose
Apples and ripe light fruits, some of them a bit mushy. The aroma of the whisky is fruity, but despite being 12 years old it has an undertone that is too young and is only insufficiently concealed by vanilla. Still, the whisky isn't bad on the nose, offering some nice oak flavors behind it that aren't too overpowering on the nose.
    • Taste
In the taste, the fruits come first again, apples, pears, chocolate - and then there are barrels that are too old and a disturbing bitterness, marzipan, which tilts into the aroma of bitter almonds. Shown is 1st fill ex-bourbon and virgin oak. The 1st fill casks still seem too old and Virgin Oak then brings wood tones that are too massive. Together it's not a good combination. The alcohol is also not well integrated and seems too sharp despite the drinking strength. Maybe too many feints get into the New Make. Unfortunately it didn't mature well.
    • Finish
At the end there is an unpleasant bitterness and disturbing woodiness. The wood does not develop nice, lingering aromas.

The whisky is not balanced. He has good approaches and starts with an interesting fruitiness, in between accents of marzipan and almonds flash - but then everything is ironed down by too much bitterness. Too bad. With the Ledaig smokers, the Distillery can do more...

This was fruity before getting it up to my nose. From then, malt, honey, fresh wood/grass.
    • Taste

Malty, honey and toast, a bit of spice/heat.
    • Finish
      80 80
Mostly malt, some red pepper. Medium. A faint maltiness lasts quite a bit longer.

    Nothing for me.
Pungent alcoholic aroma, quite sharp in taste.
Very dry in the finish and an aftertaste that I don't like at all.
