Strong sherry aromas, lots of dark fruits, rum pot, malty, honey sweetness, vanilla, raisins
    • Taste
      88 88
Powerful and sweet, honey, vanilla, dark fruit, dark chocolate, syrupy, oily, warming mouthfeel, alcohol well balanced
    • Finish
      88 88
Long and warming finish, honey and vanilla, subtle notes of wood, towards the end a slight dryness

    A great PX bottling!
Air and time are good for whisky.
    Changes from sip to sip!
However, you don't notice the distillery character.
    • Nose
      86 86
Dry and spicy start. Overripe fruits (plums, raisins, wild berry jam). A fresh citrus note in the background. lovage. Herbs are easy to smell. The Craigellachie base character blends in great. A slight acidity accompanies but does not go directly in the sulfur direction.
Later juicy cherries and some tobacco. orange and nut.
    • Taste
      88 88
Intensely spicy-oily on entry. In addition, sweet and overripe red fruits also resonate. Dry wood with a slight bitterness. Citrus, chocolate, honey sweetness, orange, tobacco.
A clear acidity is noticeable and now the sulfur is also there.
    • Finish
      80 80
      Short - medium length.
Some wood. Acid. Sulfur. Little fruit.
      Unfortunately nothing more is coming.

Craigellachie is a distillery that belongs to John Dewar & Sons and thus to Bacardi. The distillery has a recognized core range, but is also well represented among independent bottlers. For the core range, the distillery is proud of their worm tubs, which are said to give the whisky a particularly strong character.

This Craigallachie by ADOS has been finished in PX Butt and has a rich dark golden color that suggests sherry power. The hope is that it's not just sweet PX, but the whisky makes its mark too.

The label is decorated with the raven lady with the bloody hands. Then we'll see how bloody the tasting gets.

    • Nose
In the aroma, of course, there is an unmistakable sherry finish. The sweetness isn't overpowering, but there's the pickled fruit, there's herbs and spices, some cinnamon and fennel - and there's also a vegetal appeal that's quintessentially Craigellachie.
    • Taste
Without water, the whisky is a bit too alcoholic and the aromas only develop with difficulty. It gets better with water, but the aroma is restrained. There are chocolate flavors, tart mousse au chocolat. But the dried fruit is missing, the whisky is more on the tart-sweet chocolate side than on the fruity side. Overall, however, the aromas seem a bit artificial and insufficiently connected to the whisky.
    • Finish
Perhaps the most disappointing experience is the aftertaste: the whisky doesn't last very long, the wood leaves little impression.

This is a whisky that focuses on the finish rather than the original distillate. So there is no noticeable influence of the worm tubs. However, the barrel doesn't offer as much depth and complexity either.

It's a whisky that puts the PX finish front and center. This gives appealing aromas – but it is also somewhat arbitrary. The whisky is tasty but offers little challenge and is a bit generic as the base spirit plays a minor role, which is a shame as Craigellachie is able to develop a character all of its own with vegetal notes. So the impressions are quickly gone.

I have seldom experienced such a wonderful nose and then such an average taste and finish. That's really a pity.

As is so often the case with the ADoS bottlings, this one is also very barrel-heavy for me.
Again too overloaded. Doesn't meet my taste. Too bad.
But it isn't necessarily bad either.
    • Nose
      84 84
The first impression is an intense, dark, fruity and very sweet malt. Oranges, dark grapes, raisins, cherries and figs emerge first. Some wild berry jam mixes in. There is also wood and light tobacco. Then again rum-flavored brown sugar. But everything is always very sweet.
    • Taste
      83 83
Slightly tingling in the mouth, grape-rum-nut flavors are rather gentle.
The cherries and oranges are again present with a neat sweet honey-cinnamon note. The fruit looks slightly fermented, sticky, with a slight alcoholic note at the end.
In the background some coffee with slightly bitter woody moments.
    • Finish
      81 81
Medium-long finish, dry, coffee, nuts, a slightly sticky liqueur feeling remains.

14 years and a 1st Fill Ex-Pedro Ximenez Sherry Butt, not the worst prerequisites for a tasty divine drink ... Somehow I was torn back and forth! On the one hand, plump PX flavors, sweet, fruity with hints of tobacco, on the other hand, the Craigellachie looks superimposed and somehow expressionless. For God's sake not a bad malt, even if I like the plump, dark PX roar, I still have to warm up with this bottling. For today I am giving 88 points with an upward tendency ...
    • Nose
Dark rust shimmers in the glass, a thick streak sticks to the glass wall of my Premium Snifter from which a multitude of oily "legs" loosens. Sour cherries and sweet currants rise, minimal abrasion of orange peel and fermented grapes mix with sugar and a pinch of cinnamon. The nose doesn't really know what it wants ... on the one hand sweet and fruity, on the other hand relatively expressionless and unspectacular. Here and there a few crumbs of tobacco, some wood shavings and crushed hazelnut kernels, then again sugary sweetness with fermented fruit.
    • Taste
Fermented grapes and berries flash, sweetness emerges and ends slightly tart on the tongue. The voluminous alcohol is immediately present and heats up the entire mouth properly. Tobacco, dark PX flavors, a hint of caramel and espresso, peppery spiciness in combination with sour cherries and oranges, hazelnuts, spicy oak, hints of sulfur and rotten wood, the tongue still glows while slowly black pepper with a hint of chilli the saliva stimulates.
    • Finish
Peeled and chewed hazelnuts stick to the palate, unripe walnuts are added, grapes stick sweetly to the palate, dried tobacco leaves are added ...

with a little water only sweet as sugar, a little fermented plum and a little tobacco. Short and meaningless, no distillery character, reminds me of the cheap lychee liqueur that is occasionally available at the cheap Chinese restaurant around the corner, no thanks!

Without rating. There are definitely people who like it, but what this Craigellachie certainly no longer is is whisky.
    • Nose
Intense, sticky and incredibly sweet. Dates, Turkish honey, grapes, cherries and blueberries. I don't think I could identify it neat as whisky. Pure PX, without distillery character.
    • Taste
Intensely nutty, rum balls, sticky honey, strongly alcoholic grapes.
    • Finish
The finish is nutty and rather short.

Awesome nose, taste and finish, lots of dried sweet fruits. I recommend some drops of water to smoothen even more! Great stuff!

  20. Sventze scored this whisky 89 points Expert Junior

    • Nose
Later flowery, tobacco, wood, not so exciting, fruity with water
    • Taste
Similar to cigar malt, sweet, later becoming pleasantly bitter, old fruit, the stonemason's apron offers something metallic towards the end
    • Finish
medium length, warm, heavy tobacco, pleasant mildness, becoming dry
