It's a typical modern day sherry soup. Not much left of the whisky itself through the layers of sherry. The colour is incredible though. If you like your sherry with a punch it's what you want.
    • Nose
      87 87
Very sherried. Furniture polish and dried raisins
    • Taste
      86 86
Again very sherried at first. In the back of the mouth the whisky fights back and we get a hint of what could be
    • Finish
      87 87
Long but nothing very special. Sweet and dried fruits

I bought a 5cl sample from the Brühl whisky house for 18.5 euros. In retrospect, a 2cl sample would have been enough for me.
All in all, it is a bit disappointing for the age and the cask strength with these key data and somehow unfortunately it cannot really or not continuously inspire me for the whole 60 minutes that I have been dealing with such a 5cl sample, although it also has nice aspects .

A very intense, strong malt, whose sherry finish was probably a bit too much after a full maturation in the sherry cask.
In any case, Oloroso sherry was also involved here and that was a good thing, because this intensity and compactness with a PX sherry would probably have overwhelmed it and made it totally boring.

I like it better with water.
It lies between the 88 and the 89 points. That probably depends on the form of the day. 89 points today because I like the interplay when adding water and I also like this aroma profile in general. If it were more delicate, it would be 89-90 points.
    • Nose
      88 88
      88.5
Very nutty at the beginning, many dark sherry tones of raisins, simple dark leather and strong coffee. The alcohol in Glencairn is surprisingly hidden at almost 60%, well integrated and round.
With water, more fruity notes of cherry emerge.

Even after standing and even with water, it never really opens up or offers the aromas scattered across the board.
    • Taste
      89 89
Corresponds to the nose, maybe a little sweeter in the middle part.

Again dark notes of nuts, raisins and lots of dried plums. When you start you don't notice the percentages, but at the latest in the middle part you can feel the alcohol (too) clearly.

With water, the sweet and woody bitter notes come out much more clearly, but the mouthfeel also becomes much more pleasant. However, it then leans more towards a tasty all-day dram and that's not what I'd expect from a 20-year-old whisky for the price.
    • Finish
      89 89
With water a pleasant and long finish, again nutty-sweet like a Duplo chocolate "praline". Less comfortable without water.

You can enjoy it but it didn't quite work out - that's how you can describe it ...
    • Nose
      86 86
Very strong, intrusive sherry nose. You can feel the barrel strength in the nose, behind it a refreshing note
    • Taste
      85 85
Spicy start, dark fruits, astringent, cherry, pepper, the saliva flows
    • Finish
      86 86
      ... on a long, oak-spicy finish.
I suspect the refill barrels didn't bring enough sherry with them, the experiment of filling it in first-fill then killed him.

Time and a little water make it more accessible and round. This is my recommendation and results in a benevolent 86 points in total. Not a must-have

This whisky looks like the product of a not entirely successful experiment. First, it was poured into a refill, and then, as I believe, it was concluded that it was not deep enough, and it was poured into fresh barrels, but did not get the desired result. He turned out to be aggressive both in degree and in taste.
    • Nose
      87 87
Too much: degree, oak, sweetness, and all this together creates an association of musty, stale autumn leaves, with accompanying bitterness. Even this plum marshmallow is either cloying or spoiled.
    • Taste
      88 88
Dust, salt, pepper and ash on smoked prunes and raisins, oak, and excessive sweetness, the expected varnish.
    • Finish
      87 87
Hot, sweet, sugary, leaving in bitterness and salt.

An ambiguous benriach. The potential was not bad, but it seems that something is wrong with the barrel.
    • Nose
      89 89
In the aroma, the overdressed fruit is not bad, but there is no juiciness
    • Taste
      89 89
Salty plum syrup. Good. Dustiness and cloying. The taste continues the aroma. All the same, it seems that the fruit has been wedged. Dusty chest of drawers.
    • Finish
      87 87
Medium duration aftertaste. Simple enough. Apricot, white pepper, dry skin

It is a very pleasant and tasty whisky. In the past I was not very convinced of BenRiach, this bottling deserves the title "excellent".
    • Nose
      88 88
After the whisky has rested in the glass for some time, the first nose has a biting-stinging effect. You can tell the alcohol content, even if it is not more than 60%. Immediately there is a sherry sweetness in the nose, which comes across as fruity and also a bit heavy. The smell is rounded off by a fine oak note.
    • Taste
      90 90
Berries and raisins dominate. The whisky has a lot of sherry in the beginning, it is also wonderfully sweet and fruity. The oak barrel comes out with a subtle taste, not too intense as one might have expected with a maturation of over 20 years. The alcohol content is very well integrated - unlike what you might have thought from the smell experience.
    • Finish
      91 91
The finish is very intensely sweet and wonderfully long-lasting. At the very end, the influence of the sherry barrel becomes clear again and the oak note comes out more clearly. All in all, a very round and pleasant whisky in taste.

Very dark color. Overall a very nice whisky that has a lot of taste from the barrels used. He's a little one-dimensional and he doesn't have enough of the Benriach's own character. The alcohol is pleasantly unobtrusive. Be sure to enjoy this benriach with water.
