Whisky Reviews for Caol Ila 21-year-old BW

10 users have left a review for this whisky and scored it an average of 88.34 points

Especially slightly tart and ashy notes are pronounced here, fruit and sweetness tend to hold back.
Overall, a successful bottling, albeit not too complex and you don't necessarily notice the long 21 years of maturation.

Delicious and tasty Caol Ila. Lately you have mainly been getting Caol Ila as (sweet) full maturation or with a finish (and mostly younger than here), but the distillate really doesn't need to hide from other Islay distilleries. A Caol Ila from a bourbon barrel is just really good. With this bottling you don't quite notice that it is 21 years old, but I really like the combination of smoke, wood, slightly tart herbs and citrus and banana notes. 89 points

I am a big fan of long-matured smoky whiskys, which could be tamed a bit by their time in the barrel and thus often bring a great complexity with them. And this malt can also inspire me with its harmonious interplay of sweet honey and fruit aromas, a pleasant oak and the classic Caol Ila smoke. Multi-layered, elegant and also simply delicious! That actually describes this old-school smoker quite aptly for me.
    • Nose
Soft aromas of sweet honey, soft marzipan and sugared halve show me from the first nose that I can look forward to a balanced whisky in an old-school guise. After a short time in the glass, slightly musty to sour aromas build up, which remind me of fino sherry and dried apple rings on the one hand, but also of new leather and freshly cut hay on the other. This range of aromas is accompanied by a smoke that is still quite present for its age, but very harmonious (wood fire with a slightly peppery flavor).
    • Taste
The taste is also characterized by sweet honey notes, which are supported by a surprisingly intense vanilla aroma. This is accompanied by almonds and walnuts coated with white chocolate, as well as sweet biscuit biscuits (sponge fingers with cocoa powder).
    • Finish
The ladyfingers and cocoa powder melt in combination with the creaminess of the vanilla to create a pleasant tiramisu aroma. In addition, there is now a nicely integrated dry oak spice that becomes slightly peppery over time. In the end, a sticky, sweet note of honey wine remains in the mouth along with an ashy smokiness.

The nose is excellent. Unfortunately, the rest can't really keep up.

A very strong nose. Typical Caol Ila, a good amount of smoke, but it is very well integrated. The alcohol brings out the sweetness in the nose nicely. Light fruit flavors that almost go in the direction of tropical are also included. All in all well coordinated. With time in the air, the aroma gains extremely.
    • Taste
      89 89
A good portion of sweetness and a presence of smoke come along harmoniously. Unfortunately, the malt seems a little watery and not very complex, despite the long maturation
    • Finish
      88 88
The maturation of 21 years is noticeable in the finish. After swallowing, a stronger load of tannins becomes noticeable, which is also stronger. Medium long

A rather reserved bottling. Opens a little with little water and a lot of time in the glass. Fruity aromas are more in the background, while an ashy spice underlines the mild honey sweetness. Tasty but less complex than expected. At the current price of almost 200 euros, I would personally not buy the bottle. Caol-Ila fans could get their money's worth. A sample is particularly recommended here before buying.

Restrained, ashy, hardly any alcohol sharpness, a touch of country air. At first there is no trace of vanilla. Easily reminds me of the smell when lighting a gas grill. After 15-20 minutes in the glass, there is a slightly spicy, pleasant note of wood. Gains in depth in the glass over time. A few drops of water open the whisky a little in the second run. For me it becomes a little more intense and better.
    • Taste
      87 87
Mild honey sweetness, subtle spiciness, slightly peppery. But here, too, overall rather cautious, except for the rather brisk start for 48.3% ABV at 21 years of barrel aging. A few drops of water make it appear a little more intense to me.
    • Finish
      86 86
Spicy, slightly peppery, with somewhat tart wood notes. Medium length. A last breath of country air when I let some air slide over my tongue. Overall, also in the finish rather light and reserved and also hardly a trace of vanilla.
