As always with Scotch Universe, the first thing to do is to decode the code on the bottle:

    128 ° = 128 months = 10 years + 8 months of maturity
    U = unpeated
7.1 '= 1st fill Ruby Port Wine Barrqique barrel
1898.2 = A Speyside distillery opened in 1898, there are a few of them, but the name of the bottling helps us here, apparently Glen Elgin is behind Gamma Epsilon.

A fruity, tasty and once again dangerously drinkable dram, which the druid Michel himself named as his favorite of the current release and I can well understand why!
    • Nose
Fruity and still fresh port wine nose. Sweet wine, dark grapes, milk chocolate.
After the first sip, it becomes sweeter and shows sugar and cherries.
    • Taste
Very soft consistency that makes you believe for a moment that this is a particularly mild dram on your tongue.
But then he clearly shows his strength on the tongue.
Dark berries, the chocolate turns in the direction of dark chocolate. Pleasantly dry on the palate with cocoa and wine.
    • Finish
Spicy and warming. Becomes pleasantly dry, but remains aromatic. Dark chocolate.

The port wine influence is clearly noticeable. Easy drinking Speysider. A little water enhances the fruit aromas and the finish.
    • Nose
      86 86
Port wine, peaches, sweet grapes, strawberries, vanilla, toffee. Sweet spices.
    • Taste
      87 87
Wine and grapes, peaches, plums, blackberries. Milk chocolate, tannins and oak spice and a slight ginger spiciness.
    • Finish
      86 86
Becomes drier, fruitiness and chocolate stay medium length.

For me this works. Very nice port influence. Impressive nose. I would probably think this was a Glenallachie in a blind tasting. My first encounter with Scotch Universe (and Glen Elgin), definitely not the last. That yummy saltiness...

Swifty (above) said everything important about the sensory profile. I would like to add that you will probably finish this bottle very soon, as it is enjoyable and it makes you share this great experience.

    Boring, flat, overflowing barrel influence

In the Scotch Universe series, under the umbrella of Kirsch Import, Michel Reick bottles whiskys with the names of invented galaxies. There are also 'coordinates' from which age and maturation can be derived and, in the best case, the distillery can be determined from the region and year. In 1898 some distilleries were founded in Speyside. This whisky comes from Glen Elgin and the wine cask has left a reddish tinge of gold.

    • Nose
Strong vanilla is initially present on the nose, the wine notes are not yet revealed. Vanilla, a few spices - fruity notes don't open up. With water comes some pear, maybe white peach. Overall, the aroma in the nosing is rather weak. There is some wood to the vanilla and there is also a grassy moment. The whisky is not old and mature, it cannot hide that. The wine comes with a rather sour note.
    • Taste
The taste of the wine is also weak. Is that supposed to be 1st fill Ruby Port? Where's the wine, where's the wine gum? Even a few drops of water won't do much. The aromas are then completely watery, the alcohol still burns and the wood becomes musty. There's a sweetness somewhere in the background, it's noticeable in the mouth but doesn't unfold.
    • Finish
The finish is not very pronounced with a slightly musty note of wood.

Glen Elgin is a rather underrepresented distillery from the Diageo empire, which has a standard 12-year-old bottling, but still doesn't stand out. I had the 12 a few years ago, it couldn't convince me of the still, it was too expressionless. This will not change with this independent bottling, which also remains too expressionless. It's more of a weak whisky that might have needed a little more time. I don't like it that much...
