  1. Official tasting note

NOSE: Stewed fruits, cured meats, soft leather, ocean air and blackcurrant

PALATE: Peppered strawberries, toasted oak and fresh barley with sea salt

FINISH: Long finish with tarry ropes, peat smoke, toffee, citrus and more peat! (CGL)

  2. Vmarcinv scored this whisky 92 points Expert Senior

Nose - maritime, a little smoke which is the background rather than the main fiddle, additionally a little dried fruit, seaweed, a slight hint of mint.
Taste - still a lot of maritime, salty smoked cod, then dried fruit in such a dirty notes.
Finish - Long, slightly spicy, the salty remains, complemented by light fruitiness, oak and old rags appear.
quality for price at the highest level!

This is perhaps the best Ledaig I've had in my glass so far. And that was a couple of dozen.

A real board. Indispensable for Ledaig fans in my opinion. I think the issue price of around 165 EUR is reasonable.
    • Nose
      93 93
At the first contact, a small harbor, sea and seaweed flow towards you. Some rancid oil. Then clear smoke, but typically Ledaig rather funky and dirty. Becomes less boisterous with time in the glass and gets dry fruit notes. Fantastic, multi-layered, rough and yet somehow round.
    • Taste
      90 90
Very maritime, salty, smoky, astringent, dirty.
    • Finish
      89 89
Medium length, quite spicy, the smoke stays with some oak.

Extremely dirty, too much even. First thing that comes to mind is cow pat. Quite some sulphur, and peat of course. Eventually some blackberry, mocha and caramel. With water a little blood orange.
    • Taste
      88 88
Peat, blackberry and Printen. The sulphur is less prominent than in the nose. Eventually orange.
    • Finish
      88 88
Peat, caramel, blackberry, gingerbread and raisin.

Another one of those great '98 sherry casks: thick layers of fruit with extreme levels of brine, dirt and farminess. The nose is downright amazing here, taste and finish are shifting towards the ashy/charcoal side of the spectrum.
    • Nose
      92 92
Thick sweet sherry smells on top an extremely dirty base layer of peat, farminess and salty brine. Burnt and smoked vegetation, vegetal peat, smoked bacon and ham, soy sauce, mustard, old cheese, cherries, sour berries, figs, sultanas, macadamia, salted pecans, tobacco leaves, an old toolshed, toffee sweetness, brown sugar.
    • Taste
      90 90
Very creamy, a greasy fat layer of smoke and peat, some punchy peppery alchol, smoked bacon and ham, silage, soy sauce, nutty, creosote, honied black liquorice, toffee, cherry, red sour currants, raisins, dark chocoate, a layer of bitter charred wood at the back.
    • Finish
      90 90
Very long: quite dry but initially a sweet layer of syrupy sherry fruits and toffee, then farmy, black liquorice, dark chocolate and coffee notes, salted and roasted nuts, tobacco, some chili peppers and drying out on bitter black charcoal notes.

Sea, salty and dirty. Peat, honey, leather, tobacco, soot, cowshed, spices. Rich, balanced, quite fat, tasty. Thank you, Vitya) 22.5-22.5-22.5-22.5

This one was insanely good. An almost perfect harmony between peat, spirit and cask. Salt is a descriptor throughout the whole experience and often something that's really lacking in today's Islay malts. The peat takes on a supporting role rather than a dominating one, and does that very well. As others said, a brilliant Ledaig and also the best Ledaig I've had in my glass yet. Wish I discovered this one earlier!

    Based on a sample.
    • Nose
Rich as can be with lovely interplay between peat and sweet, with subtle alcoholic intensity. There's peat smoke, sea weed, brine, mud, camphor, smoked bacon, chlorine, orange, strawberry jam, pineapple juice, caramel fudge, chocolate raisin, old honey, leather, tobacco, balsamic vinegar and a rummy note. All the expected notes are here. But much more shuffled in place and with respect to each other. Especially the peat smoke, which lost its dominating character but kept all of its aroma's. Beautiful!
    • Taste
Not a kick in the teeth but a well behaved, maritime malt. Based on the nose I expected a little sugary, sherry glaze but that is absent on the palate. So we have peat, smoked bacon, brine, iodine, soot, strawberry jam, orange zest, raisin, cherry, assorted chocolate, caramel, old honey, balsamic vinegar, mint, and some PX sherry in the back. It reminds me of a White Horse Lagavulin 16 but much more natural. Love this salty, uber harmonious beast.
    • Finish
Medium to long in length. There's peat, sea salt, traces of dried fruit, fig paste, caramel, dark chocolate, honey licorice, leather, tobacco, balsamic and cashew.

Too short.. for my desire ;)

Compared to the Ledaig 18 Batch 3 (WID: 93480) it looks a bit cleaner here. It also has these special Ledaig notes, but they don't seem quite as snotty and dirty as the 18er. But are still there. This is probably also due to the fact that the smoke of the DL is a little drier than that of the 18. In addition, beautiful sherry tones with spices.

The DL looks a bit more noble overall, but still has enough Ledaig character. A really tasty malt. Quite a head-to-head race for me between the two of them. I like both. The 18 is a little dirtier and the DL a bit more elegant.

It's a very delicious bottling with a lot of sherry and maritime notes. Dirty and smoky. Good balanced, complex and deep Ledaig.

  23. OJK scored this whisky 90 points Expert Senior

Quite a shy nose, with unpasteurised milk and ash, with a hint of oyster, coconut, lime, some honey-glazed ham and saline solution. Gentle and restrained on the palate, with cherry and soft herbal smoke, caramelised peanut, mocha, black pepper and butter. Dark chocolate and raspberry on the finish, with more oyster brine, bitter coffee bean, and eucalyptus smoke.

A rich palette of colors and flavors. Very tasty, fatty, smoky, like a steak roasted on coals, with coal dust settled on it. Sweet, a little technical notes - burnt plastic.
    • Nose
      91 91
Spices, warm smoke, through which dark dried fruits rise, with cinnamon, red apples, thick tones of sherry - prunes and dark grapes, a little dry in the end.
    • Taste
      90 90
Tea brew that dries, smoke, plum marshmallow with spices, chocolate-covered raisins.
    • Finish
      90 90
Warm, smoky, sweet, thick, rich & long lasting.

very nice nose (esp. With a bit of water) with maritime notes falling on red fruits, leather and Christmas spices.. but the palate’s fiery and bites a little too strongly for my taste.. whereas i find the finish a little cloying

This is where the Ledaig smoke comes through, which I was still missing in my nose. Cowshed, lots of black pepper, again berries and intense oak spice, quite creamy with dried fruit (apricot) and tobacco
    • Finish
