    • Taste
      dry, peaty taste, some fruit;
    • Finish
      very smooth, long and dry

    Quick review. Advent calendar 23.12.
Quite an oddball of an Islay whisky. If I should make a bet it would be on reject casks from Bowmore.
    • Nose
      83 83
Peat, ash, brackish sea shore, not hiding it's Islay origin although it's not extreme in any way.
      Light citrus.
Something funky going on with the wood, most likely from the sherry casks.
      Interesting but not particularly promising.
    • Taste
      81 81
      Peat. Peppery spice.
A combination of sweet and sour clashing and making it unbalanced. It doesn't help that it goes bitter right after swallowing either.
It's a mix of bourbon and sherry casks, but I can't say it has the character of neither.
    • Finish
      75 75
Can't put my finger on it but there's an odd note to the finish before it dies with quite a long lingering sweetness, almost queasy. Not a huge fan of this ending.

Quick hit review. Whisky calendar - Day 23.

Another mystery Islay malt, most likely Caol Ila or Bowmore. Imagine a corroding wreck at the shores, surrounded by rock pools and seaweed. Add mineral peat smoke, olive oil and orange zest, and you got the nose of this dram. Heather honey, grapefruit and black pepper kick off the palate, with sour, peaty and slightly bitter flavors at the forefront. Long but not entirely pleasant, the finish lingers with brine, tannins and green tea. A bit rugged and brusque, this Mac-Talla is almost like an old sailor on a rainy day.

Smells weird, tastes unpleasant. Sorry, not my kind of whisky.

  8. Spielerabe scored this whisky 38 points Newbie

Hardly any smell / aroma in the glass. Very pleasant when drinking and then extremely strange taste in the finish. Not again

  9. _Dziki_ scored this whisky 84 points Expert Senior

Nose, initially tarry smoke, engine exhaust, quite a rare whisky smell, after a while sweet aromas open, lots of green apple, banana, pomelo, lime, salted peanuts at the end.
Taste, salty, you can feel the mentioned peanuts, pistachios, vanilla, meringue, delicate and creamy in the mouth, hides the tongue well, thick, peaty and earthy, bison grass, cooked vegetables, malt.
Finish, above all, smoky and salty, ashy, bitter, warming, but not alcoholic. Medium long.

A decent dram which would have been much improved if it were a little more chewy - lacking some oily loveliness to elevate it to the next level.
    • Nose
      82 82
A gentle bonfire on a wet beach
    • Taste
      82 82
Quite thin in texture, the smoke is pleasant - overall an easy drinker.
    • Finish
      81 81
Medium - the smoke lingers a while.

    • Nose
Bonfire smoke. A touch of brine and seaweed, but also a hint of seashells. This is followed by a light citrus note. Later also blueberries and a drop of acacia honey.
    • Taste
A creamy mouthfeel, which goes towards creme brulee and milk chocolate at first. Then bonfire smoke again. A salty note. Honey and that very same citrus note but more into the back. It’s a little herbal too, reminding me of thyme.
    • Finish
Lingering with warming spices such as black pepper and nutmeg. The bonfire smoke is here as well, but also that herbal note with a bit of thyme and licorice.

[October 2022] I had a dram during a private tasting...

...and this is a nice and easy quaffable Caol Ila with a significant peat level (cold ashes of an extinguished bonfire at the shores of Islay). What else to say? Nothing, because this description says it all.

  13. dercaptain scored this whisky 84 points Expert Senior

settled peat smoke, plus a light hint of wild berries (like a wild berry tea bag), also maritime, a bit wild in the mouth and citrus. Some wood in the back

Whisky meets weizenbeer, that's what it does to me. In the nose some more sweetness, but in taste clearly a sour citrus touch combined with a gentle peat.
    Pleasant for sure.
    • Nose
      85 85
Smoky, sweet popcorn, some citrus. Powerful scent, floral notes, berries. Some roasted meat.
    • Taste
      85 85
Quite smooth, with a little sparkle. Weizenbeer, sour, citrus, woodsmoke.
    • Finish
      84 84
Still quite smooth, some sweet and sour woodsmoke, still some weizenbeer experience, citrus. Medium long finish.

  18. FritzeKrautman scored this whisky 84 points Connoisseur

A typical Islay, probably from Caol Ila. However, it hardly offers any special features, the sherry cask influences are very small and in my opinion it is not significantly better than the clearly cheaper Cask Strength NAS Mac-Talla Mara
    • Nose
      84 84
Campfire, some iodine, malt, citrus, formaldehyde, ink, oak, spices
    • Taste
      83 83
      powerful attack, bitter, ash, spices
    • Finish
      84 84
Quite a long finish with smoke, malt, oak, ham, salt, espresso. alcohol strong.

Lots of sweet peat and smoke. Citrus. Minerality. Maybe some seaweed. Red fruit in the background. Salt. Vanilla.
    • Taste
      83 83
Light smoke. A bit of medication. Iodine. Not very oily. Spices. Cinnamon. Vanilla. Traces of fruit.
    • Finish
      84 84
Smoke. Slightly sweet. Minerality. Salt. Sea. Some ashes. Medium-long finish.

Gentle and rich Caol Ila whisky with balanced mix of peaty smoke and spices. It is solid and has quite long finish.

Whisky is average for me, I was counting on something more because the years spent in a barrel (15 YO) oblige me to something. It's not that bad, but it lacks something.
The aroma is too much for my nose to feel rubber, a sole made of sports sneakers, it's good that the stewed fruit covers the smell so much that it is not so dominant. The taste is much better, thanks to the oiliness and soft citrus malt, wrapped in saltiness and a delicate fish smokehouse.
I bought a bottle, fascinated by the Talla Mara version. Unfortunately, the second time I will not be tempted again.
    • Nose
      81 81
sweet, raisins, boiled apples, gum, smoky
    • Taste
      82 82
oily, sweet, citrus, smoked fish, saltiness, a little smoke
    • Finish
      82 82
medium long, quite sweet, slightly bitter, smoky and warming end.

Uncompromising coastal Islay. I'm thinking Laphroaig but far from sure because not that heavy with TCP. Could be Caol Ila (most un-named Islay's are) but lacks that citrus/ bacon note. I hoped for Bowmore but def not. Equally, not Lagavulin or Ardbeg because lacks the weight. VERY good if you like your Islay like a slap round the face with a kipper. Personally I wont buy again, but for Islay fiends it's a must-buy.

Maybe Kilchoman? but not a whisky I have tried.

Update: 19 days later. Much improved & mellower now the level in the bottle has gone down. Fairly sure it's a GOOD Caol Isla, has a distinct pungent whiff of stables & horses. Similar to "Islay #1 - Batch 1 (That Boutique-y Whisky Company)"
    • Nose
      90 90
Light & bright, kelp smoke, antiseptic, lime juice, a touch of sherry cask (but zero Bourbon). Very promising.
    • Taste
      75 75
Immediately sour & bitter. Numbing bonfire smoke. Dettol. Some sweet malt coming through....it tasted much better earlier this evening.
    • Finish
      81 81
Mouth tingling, biting phenolic, really wipes out the palate so any complexity vanishes. This is a dram to drink in front of a smokey log fire while your eyes are streaming. After the first glass you can no longer taste anything else.
