  1. Official tasting note

    official information:

Black Rock Batch 8, Single Grain Whiskey, 61.50% Vol.

Black Rock Whiskey is our series that stands for Irish, bourbon barrel-aged whiskeys at cask strength. A range of authentic and honest whiskeys.

This bottling also has a special background: At the beginning of the year we had to say goodbye to our good friend and long-time companion Thomas Hermann. He died suddenly of a heart attack. Tom was always passionate about it and never averse to a good whiskey. Good grain whiskeys were very important to him and he was always pleasantly surprised by the Irish grains. We dedicate this Black Rock Batch 8 to Tom and will donate a large part of the proceeds to the German Heart Foundation on his behalf.

For the Black Rock Batch 8 we chose a 13 year old grain whiskey that matured the full time in a first-fill bourbon barrel.

The whiskey was not colored, not chill filtered and each bottle is individually numbered.

Chocolate espresso beans combine the sweetness and the tartness in the nose, which does not make me think of a grain.
    • Taste
      87 87
A slightly numbing oak bitterness, which is not spicy despite the 61.5%. You can have a little water, but you don't have to admit it
    • Finish
      88 88
If I hadn't blindly recognized it as grain, great selection - a large bottle of it will be ordered!

Wow! Beguiling grain sweetness with sweet and creamy fruits inspire me from the first minute, a really dreamlike drop. Ok, here and there a certain youthfulness becomes noticeable, the high alcohol content certainly also contributes a little ... I normally don't like Irish whiskeys, but I didn't want to miss a single grain in honor of Thomas. Lo and behold, I am thrilled and will order a bottle or two of this delicious grain afterwards!

    • Nose
Light caramel shines in the glass, a syrupy streak sticks to the glass wall of my Premium Snifter, from which thick tears occasionally come off. Wonderful grain sweetness rises, vanilla plays with sugar, caramel drips onto velvety vineyard peaches and creamy apricots. The extreme sweetness is impressive, the high alcohol content is wonderfully gently integrated and barely noticeable. Sugar, vanilla, pudding, sweet and fermented yellow fruits, minimal floral, hints of liquid milk chocolate, I just can't get enough of this sweet temptation!
    • Taste
The first sip flows creamy and sweet through the mouth, vanilla and caramelized sugar live on the tongue, apricots and peaches follow, shortbread biscuits and custard flatter the tongue. The high alcohol content is noticeable in the taste from time to time, but gives this sweet temptation a lot of volume and "thump"! Creamy and sweet, the second sip also inspires me, even if the high alcohol content creates a slight burning and tingling sensation on the tongue ...
    • Finish
Voluminous sweetness sticks warming on the palate and on the tongue, sugar melts in the excited saliva under the tongue, yellow fruits end in a fruity fruit salad, roasted hazelnuts and almond slivers appear. The wonderful aftertaste lingers on the tongue for a long time ...

Single grain, the often neglected stepchild among whisk (e) ys. He here with his surprisingly un-grainy nose and his very pleasant and varied taste definitely deserves attention and attention.
    • Nose

Not so much the grain (glue, solvent, whatever you associate with it) that is in the foreground, but rather coffee beans, dark chocolate, fruit candies and a good portion of dried herbs. At least at the beginning. After a while there are hints of solvents, but the nose remains nicely spicy and sweet as candy. Can you actually smell salt?
    • Taste
      88 88
Do not be afraid of the pure enjoyment of the 61.5% - it is so smooth on the tongue that its power is only transported to the tongue as pleasant warmth. Ha! Tropical fruits at the beginning. Very briefly, but they were there: passion fruit, papaya, mango. For a very short time there was the feeling of having an older peeling on the tongue. But then he turns off in the direction of the spice rack, first delivers thyme, marjoram and bay leaves before toffee, sweet custard and even more sweetened custard arrive. Dry wood pulls through, here and there a little fresh bread dough.
    • Finish
      86 86
Medium long, dry, pleasantly spicy. The fruit flashes once more briefly on the palate, to then finally come off.

Great whiskey that you don't notice the grain. The combination with the pure Ex-BC harmonizes very well.
    I like it very much.
    • Nose
      87 87
Fresh, full of vanilla smell, lightly grilled fruit, something like grilled pineapple,
In addition, ripe fruits like banana, apricot. Caramelized fruits, some almonds and nuts are there. Sweet, malty, yeast dough with grain. Nice interplay between sweet cereals and the caramelized, slightly burnt fruits.
The high alcohol content seems to be well integrated although it is sometimes a bit noticeable. That then somehow works chemically, artificially.
    • Taste
      88 88
Peppery, spicy hot but not as much as I would have expected at 61%. Great fruit notes come right out, banana, ripe peach, coconut and citrus fruits. The sweetness is a bit more subtle but there. Caramel and vanilla directly behind it.
Also here a lot of malt and grain.
    • Finish
      86 86
Medium-long finish, more sweetness again, fruit goes back a little, honey

  8. Issie did not rate this whisky Expert Senior

I put a little water on it right away
    • Nose
Due to the high alcohol content still a lot of freshness on the nose, lemon, honey, caramel, vanilla, coconut, grain, apple, gooseberry, light grapes, cake batter
    • Taste
      Applesauce, honey, caramel,

Water is good for you, and it takes some of the intense heat in the mouth away from this young grain. It impresses with its beautiful fruity notes in connection with tolerable sharpness.
    • Nose
      86 86
Alcoholic fresh, clearly citrus, vanilla, coconut, some cake batter in the background.
    • Taste
      87 87
Vanilla pudding, coconut milk, citrus fruit, a little oak.
Without water, the alcohol is clearly noticeable and enormously occupies the tongue, intense chilli heat.
With a few drops of water: extremely sweet, the mouthfeel becomes much more pleasant.
    • Finish
      85 85
Medium long and quite sweet, coconut, peach, without water with strong heat.

Like Batch 6, I also really like Batch 8 in the series. The goal of creating characterful Irish whiskeys has also been very successful with this bottling. A very nice whiskey for lovers of sweet treats.
    • Nose
Strong sweetness, such as vanilla pudding and fruit pastries with ripe bananas and apples, but also a little pineapple. A subtle sharpness lies above it. The vanilla sweetness is becoming more and more evident, as are the apples. A little light-colored spices also appear over time.
    • Taste
Nice sweetness with a distinct chili spiciness. Then vanilla and strong caramel show up. Soft and creamy mouthfeel. The alcohol brings a strong thump, but without disturbing the pleasure. A little water softens the sharpness, but brings out slight bitterness.
    • Finish
Most of the aromas disappear after a few seconds, but a warming, sweetish sharpness remains for a long time.
