Well for a 40% whisky this is about as good as it gets.
    Beautiful stuff
I cannot even begin to imagine how good this would be at 50% but the lower strength suits this whisky, one to savour for hours no off notes, superb.
This is the sort of whisky I adore, so elegant.

Great stuff, elegant , not overpowering but just lovely on the nose.
Faint whiffs of ginger, then some caramel, fence oil (cannot remember the specific name but I have some), pine cones, wet grass, cigar smoke and chocolate biscuits.
    • Taste
      93 93
I thought the palate might lag the excellent nose but it is in step.
Lovely mouthfeel, creamy with a few orange notes, fresh cream, great sherry balance, not heavy and lets the distillery profile shine.
There is some nice spice on show here mixing with a little oatmeal before the sherry comes back and what a sherry this is.
    • Finish
      92 92
Good length not dry in any way, remaining sweet and slightly spicy

Quite simple, but well-tailored whisky, not a rich palette of derivatives, but everything is in place, good balance, and some depth is available.
    • Nose
Discreet, moist, woody-mineral, stone chips, whetstone, animal fat, frying oil, lemon wedge in tea, grain, faint smoky peat motifs.
    • Taste
Soft, calm, oak, industrial-mineral notes, grain, industrial textiles, creamy shades, metallic sourness, old leather goods.
    • Finish
Spicy, refreshing, industrial-mineral pungent notes, deep-frying oil, coated tablets, lemon peel, grain, black tea with lemon, some herbs, light smoky peaty shades.

Slightly green, aldehidic, very restrained sherry. Beeswax. Seems very closed and tired. Cut grass, a touch of dusty cocoa.
    • Taste
      85 85
Quiet sharp and green, caramel, slightly honeyed. With a drop of water, the tail end is being a little more bitter, like chestnut honey. With a lots of time, it gets a little creamier. Wood smoke
    • Finish
      86 86
      Medium length, honeyed complexity

    Nose:
so very different, as I know it from current bottlings. On the one hand, a wonderful sweetness of sherry casks, which are no longer in a dosage and balance, which is sought after today, on the other hand, a statement of distillery character, clear, full, you could use my "targeted". Herbs, wild honey, oak, star fruit, aniseed, caraway seeds, heather, peach, milk chocolate, salted butter bread with a slightly burnt crust, sherry, pickled cherry, caramel, candy in herbal tea, hints of tobacco and leather ..... ufff. A variety of flavors and intensity with just 40%. A nose to dream, exactly what I'm looking for! Long gone days, romantically transfigured notions of old, dark warehouses, ... what did you do in 1948?

    Taste:
clear, soft, pleasing, malty, tasty, caramel, vanilla, only a little sherry and oak, clear herbal notes, milk chocolate, too bad, here are missing in the percent

    finish:
Due to the dilution, unfortunately, there is not much left, which remains in the memory for a long time. Again, the creamy chocolate, sometimes white, a little oak, here lose the herbs for it dominates the sweet malty and vanilla, with later Schlücken the finish lasts much longer with its creamy sweetness and a citrus note.

    Total:
The nose is a killer, for those who love this old style, I do it again and again and find my distillery independent with such old whiskys always certain notes in the nose, which resemble each other. If only I could describe it ...
Otherwise, the painting "dies" by the thinning unfortunately the hero's death. Without question very delicious but you can clearly feel that he was watered down and robbed of its aromas. Too bad.

when you have it in the glass - smell it - that was more than 90% of the party for me - on the palate it doesn't go beyond "nice old, but a bit weak" for me, because it simply lacks the strength that the nose can had aroused high expectations as desire.
    • Nose
A very exciting nose. A fresh sour sherry note with red currant and raspberry - hardly sweet, behind it a strongly interwoven conglomerate of aromas that I associate with age - some hard wax shoe polish, old yellowed books, damp cardboard from the basement, furniture polish, beeswax

It continues to open - a delicately sulphurized (very tasty) red wine note with clear cinnamon, there's also a looooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooty, then sweet dried cherry jam, Kirsch PullMoll, noticeable mint freshness, all embedded in an aerosol oiliness that I haven't seen before had in the glass. There are also tart notes with the fruit: grape seeds and stalks, laurel leaves, coffee grounds, nutmeg, subtle in the background - cough syrup - but it flashes again and again.

I find orange, bergamot, black tea, geranium leaves, some jasmine slightly warmed up. The fruit notes are very volatile - change their intensity, their acidity and also their "color" slightly - the freshness they exude is remarkable. I only have 1cl in the snifter and the nose is dense and voluminously intense - unbelievable for the low alcohol content.
    • Taste
Creamy - soft - sweet - tingling, sherry sweetness with a fine acid level, plum jam, cherry syrup, dissolved cherry Pullmoll, the old books out of the nose, warming with a little ginger but also mint, coffee and chocolate, cough syrup, oak and herbal notes, tasty but not by far as powerful as the nose
    • Finish
beautiful sherry aromas, warming palate with remnants of herbal notes and a subtle dryness, very delicate wax film and a hint of cardboard - clearly reaches my medium length - I don't find any missing notes - bitterness not at all

[May, 2001]  I found an almost empty bottle at a hotel bar on Skye and retried it.  This time I liked it very much and scored it 90 points, no bitterness at all (maybe the oxydation in the almost empty bottle took it away).  For sure I emptied the bottle that night (unfortunately only three drams were left)...

[October, 1998]  I had this dram during a tasting at Kyrburg.  In my old rating system (ten scales that translate into WB points: 50
    - 66 - 75 - 80 - 82,5 - 85 - 87,5 - 90 - 92,5 - 95) I scored this dram 85.  My notes state it has some bitter moments both in the nose and on the palate.  Water improves the body but not the nose.

    Serge from Whiskyfun says:

Glen Grant 1948 and 1961/1981 (40%, G&M, Royal Marriage) Colour: amber. Nose: a bit of bitter caramel, bread, cooked cake. Tobacco. A bit tired and not too expressive, I’m afraid. Hints of vase water. Too bad.... Mouth: weak, dusty, with some chocolate and just hints of tropical fruits. Quite some mint too, growing bigger and bigger (After Eights). Not too bad, after all! Gets quite bitter, though, on coffee grounds. 81 points.
