Whisky Reviews for Waterford Wilkinstown: Edition 1.1

My first Waterford (hence this one) didn't disappoint. For such young whiskey, a policy with active wood management seems to work. This whiskey is quite vibrant, fresh without showing the obvious characteristics of new make. Quite good given its age!

The nose is quite solid and complex, even for an almost 4 year old. The Irish tradition of a herbal backround (fennel. meditteranian herbs) is there, but defeated by a load of fruit: poached pear, green apple, gooseberry, white grape and apricot. There is a friendly character, reminding of a lot of sweetness, including some vanilla and lively wood.

Rather oily and friendly, but not just that. It has a kick of spice in the back. There is quite some cereal involved, together with fennel seeds and sage which reminds me of old Irish whiskey. The juicy fruit is unmistakable putting its stamp on this whiskey, backed by vanilla pods, but also by black pepper corns.
    • Finish
      86 86
(Ever)lasting, medium sweet, creamy and vanilla like. It has the quality of some expressive white wines, with a lot of fruit, a touch of butter and (additional) some wood spices.

    shop info:

Ger Kelly is the third generation to grow barley on the Wilkinstown farm. The fields are located near the Slaney estuary west of Wexford. Not only is this the first whiskey to be bottled from his barley, this bottling is also exclusively made for the Netherlands. There are only 5,000 bottles available. The whiskey was composed of the following components: 25% first-fill bourbon barrels, 20% new American oak, 24% French oak (Margaux barrels) and 31% vin doux natural (madeira). According to Waterford, the whiskey is 3 years, 11 baskets and 2 days old. They do not count the time of the marriage for the age. With téiroir code F029E01-01 you can find all the details on the Waterford site. "
