Meaty, fatty, smoky, with withered leaves. A little fast at the finish line.

This lovely CL can definitely take some time (10-15 mins) to reveal itself. Lovely colour on first sight, perhaps a 2nd fill sherry butt? Overall, no doubt a Caol Ila but looks like some more work is needed to deliver a dram that’s elevated by the sherry cask rather than hinged to the ground by it.

    N 25
A fair load of dirty gasoline if not enough time is given to it. But once you get behind that wall of defence, sherry nose awaits (dark, winery fruit, even a touch chocolatey). Refreshing orchard fruit. Sea breeze waving beneath the fruits. Then more smoke, malt, and meat surfaced over time.

    P 24
At first, it’s young and spirit-driven. Moderately peated. Then instant bonfire alongside the mouthcoating sherry sweetness. Soon enough the smoked peppery spice dominated the palate, while cloves and nutmeg slowly came through. The overall experience was underpinned by a fruity and minty mouthfeel.

    F 23
Mid and dry finish. Moderately peated, cigar ashes. Chewy fruit but losing most of the sweetness here. A fair amount of tannin bitterness remains, at once almost like chewing tobacco leaves.

    09/08/2021:
Not without sympathy, young, somewhere restrained, somewhere louder, somewhere ascetic. The aroma is bright.
    • Nose

Active, tangible youth, sweet apples, sour peat, farm notes (cows), Montpensier, ash background (extinguished hearth), smoke, fresh paint, cured sausage, mint chill, dry sherry, vegetable theme (fresh vegetables), lemon.
    • Taste
      87 87
Ash, smoky, lemon in the ashes, very meaty, moderate fruit sweetness, sour peat.
    • Finish
      86 86
Meat, ash, smoky, salt / sugar neutral, knits, oak, dry peat, farm.

Delicious and pleasant! An excellent degree, equalized head-on with the base 12-year-old ... I will not say that it is better than that, but not worse! Different exposures, but equally good! Strong, tasty middle peasant!

A few drops of water made the nose less peaty and sweeter. I like the nose after the added drops.

Another disappointing Caol Ila sherry cask following the SV cask strength 10 year old last year at 60%. For me it’s the meaty sulphur again which ruins everything and a rather odd vinegar note I get on the nose. I’m obviously very sensitive though I can deal with some rubber. Will stick to pale Caol Ila from now on and know not to chase these sherry casks unless I can try a sample.

as a huge caol ila fan (or "cola ali" as the cool kids say) i had to get my hands on this. carn mor had many nice bottlings lately and with the fine pricing it wasnt a question if i will get one of these.

in my opinion caol ila is a very versatile malt which works well in various ways. young and old, classic bourbon or finished/matured in different sweet wine casks. this one is not an exception.

the nose shows great teamwork between the peat and the sherry casks with rather high complexity. on the palate the initial ash punch is rounded by the sweet and fruity texture. the long lasting finish gives you a longer enjoyment phase.

although the colour would suggest it, this is not a sherry soup which is often offered these days by many bottlers. the distilled liquid has enough room to show its character. i guess if this would be a cask strength, it would be a 90++ on the palate and finish for me.

fizzy sour candy with sweet peat, algae with some black pepper. rhabarber and thyme. some mineralic notes in the back with ripening citrus fruit. beautiful.
    • Taste
      88 88
ashy peat, rounded by the sherry soursweetness. more ashes. some herbal notes with lemon. bit stingy on the tongue. lot of smoky peat. unfortunately a bit dilluted. the nose made my expectations rather high. still a nice dram.

long finish with ashes and some gummicandy sweetness. the aftertaste you have after mixing all haribo gummibear colours together.

N: Typically CI with modern sherry good...cold smoke , winey (grape) notes, burnt caramel, hansa plast ( medical note), nice sea spray note...

m: creamy and sweet in the start ( for a second maybe pullmoll cherry), smoky , medical note ( less thrn in the nose), White grapes, lemon, oak tickleling nicely, salty ...later less sweet and much more coastel then in the start nice development...

F: Long: chocolate (medium), cold ash, pepper, lemoncest

Another very good indie CI - to mee no off notes as mentioned below...Not too much on the fruit side, not over sherried nice balanced imo. My guess it's rather a finish in active casks than a full sherry maturation...or is it just American oak sherry..

Wow, if I could pick a few words to describe this it would be Lagavulin 16 on steroids. Huge peat hit and that Oloroso sherry maturation is a perfect complement to this. The peat profile is very similar to Lagavulin which makes sense as both are peated to the same specifications over in Port Ellen Maltings. Value (£48) : 9/10
    • Nose
The initial nose is a fistful of dirty Islay peat. Smoking wooden ashes and barbecued meats galore. Honey glazed ham. Salty seaspray with fresh seashells and kippers. An almost funky Parmesan note. Then, some sweetness. Vanilla sponge filled with raspberries and sultanas. A squeeze of lemon freshness and some candied orange peels. Dark caramel and brown sugar. Then some cracked black pepper.
    • Taste
Much sweeter on the palate. The peat is earthier with a note of TCP now, it calms down slightly (but is still very present). More juicy red fruits and toffee now. Fresh leather and dried tea leaves. More barbecued meats. Candied bacon. Again candied citrus peels. Burnt tobacco and cigar ash. Delicate warming ginger and some minty liquorice.
    • Finish
Medium in length. The peat returns and dominates initially. Ashtray. More tea leaves and burnt tobacco. A bitter mocha-like note now. Light tannins and just enough brown sugar sweetness to give it some balance.

Overall balanced between casks and spirit, peat comes thought with harmony, well made whisky for the £50 mark. No brainer
