    • Nose
intense with 'sulphur', burnt sugar nuts, plum and fried banana
    • Taste
the age is noticeable, but still: what a taste! burnt caramel, fried banana, a little bit of smoke, pomegranate and slightly salty

  4. Islaysmoke scored this whisky 89 points Expert Senior

Another great whisky from the Càrn Mòr series by Morrison.
    • Nose
      89 89
Smoking wood from a campfire with sweet and creamy butterscotch sweets. Fruity oranges, malty.
    • Taste
      89 89
Something banished. Lots of fruit. Juice orange. Caramel. Spicy.
    • Finish
      88 88
Warm smoke stays on my tongue the longest. Spicy long.

  5. fnk scored this whisky 86 points Expert Senior

Saturated, cool aroma, I would say multifaceted, here and sherry notes, and something from Nevis is, and a light smoky. Smoke seems to me a little inconvenient here.

  6. craide scored this whisky 88 points Expert Senior

It can go like that too. Great smoke, great sherry, really great what is already possible here at 6Y. The smoke reminds me a bit of Laphroaig. I like it very much!
    • Nose
      88 88
Smoky, greasy, some ash, plus fresh fruity aromas. Nuts and a few spices will come through. Oranges, ripe bananas and some dried fruit add a nice, full sweetness.
Red berries with malty roasted aromas penetrate the front. Some burnt coffee powder is included.
    • Taste
      88 88
Creamy, soft beginning on the palate, oak, spice, and the fruits make for a first positive impression. In addition, the great ashy smoke mixes in. Slightly fat, slightly salty, nut chocolate, red berries with orange peel. A slight sweetness comes out only tentatively. The fruits also look more like smoked fruits.
    • Finish
      87 87
Medium-long finish, slightly dry mouthfeel, oak spiciness, some leather, hardly any smoke, but now a little more sweet and malty.

  7. Simon Stood scored this whisky 87 points Expert Senior

Not a bad Ben Nevis, the presence of peaty notes does not correspond to the usual style of distillery.
    • Nose
      86 86
There are notes of smoke in the aroma. Uzvar, prunes, young. 21.5
    • Taste
      87 87
Ripe fruit, some smoke. Not bad, but not a masterpiece. 22
    • Finish
      87 87
Medium long finish. Soft and not sharp. 22

I like BBQ spare ribs - best with hickory smoke BBQ sauce
    • Nose
      89 89
Smoked bacon, hickory smoke and BBQ honey bacon, toasted bread, honey, little vinous, hints of butterscotch
    • Taste
      90 90
Smoky, meaty, bacon, subtle sweetness, BBQ spare ribs, nutty, dates, brandy vinegar, dark honey, hickory smoke BBQ sauce
    • Finish
      89 89
      Medium long, warm, smoky, spicy

cold ashes, smoked bacon, some nuts and red fruits, I couldnt have guessed it was a BN, not bad

  10. just 2thetop scored this whisky 88 points Expert Junior

Strong sherry cask influence - with a little sulphur - on the heavy slightly grunge garage Ben Nevis spirit. Good ingredients for a solid malt.
However, it's still fighting when first poured into the glass so needs some time to calm down. Then feed it some water and it is tamed.
Good stuff but not for the pour and play moments so needs some time/patience.

This was my first introduction to the infamous peated-sherried Ben Nevis from 2015. Although there is some dilution happening, the strength of the malt is not lacking.

This is a savoury-savoury dram. Completely unrecognisable from 1998 or 2003 refill casks. There is a hint of sweet and sour fruits dotted through, but it's rather on the background. A quite distinguished malt with characters, although I can see some not liking it for its unusualness - as I was when I first had it. Still, I prefer some other 15 Nevis at cask strength, but this is fine as well.
    • Nose
Soy sauce, peppercorns, savoury, soft earthy peat smoke
    • Taste
Soy sauce, savoury, sweet jerky, treacle syrup, dried prunes
    • Finish
Treacle syrup, slight earthy smoke, average in length

This is a seriously good whisky. 6 year old with powerful flavours and complexity expected from a +12 year whisky. See a few comments mentioning that it tastes youthful, but personally have to disagree. First sample of a Ben Nevis and not disappointed.

Smokey, nutty, orangey, meaty, loads going on for me….

Lactose peat on the nose, with sheep cheese, smoked grapefruit, fennel, burnt brown sugar and candied almonds. Nicely oily and milky on the palate, with damp earth, orange cake and almonds, slightly short on the finish with vanilla ice-cream, black pepper and sweet smoke.

This is not a typical Ben Nevis, as other tasters have commented here. But it IS definitely a character malt and very much deserving of a well-above average rating.
There's not the typical orange and spice influenced palate that comes through on the standard 10 year old, but there's a particular kind of funk coming through from the sherry casks which almost makes me think of Springbank- or Ledaig-style dirtiness. That's the surprise.
There's furniture polish and the slightest hint of rubber on the nose, getting started, then a complex alternating mixture of sweet and sour, farmyard notes and drying spice on the attractive finish.
And it's only 6 years old! Seems that Carn Mor bought themselves some classic dirty sherry casks for this little parcel and have produced a very unique malt. It held up extremely well in a blind line-up a week ago with other drams such as the Wemyss Bunna Untold Riches and a North British 32 year old grain from Cadenhead's.
    Pleasantly surprised.

Initially a lot of sour red fruits and clear smoky hints in the nose. The taste is less sour, clearly red fruits and smoky. Pretty some power at first, then the pickering mouthfeel changes per nip.
A nice Ben Nevis, although not recognizable as such.
    • Nose
      86 86
Warm scents, (red) fruity with a smoky touch. Sour. Prunes, berries, roasted meat, some burnt coffee. Hardly any alcohol.
    • Taste
      87 87
Pretty strong and powerful, pepper. Red fruits, prunes, blueberries, some smoky edge underneath, meaty. Winegums. One moment a bit smoother, then more pepper again, with sometimes a somewhat thin mouthfeel as well. Later on some earthy notes as well.
    • Finish
      86 86
Winegums. A bit drying mouthfeel. Red fruits with a smoky touch, prunes. Some smoke remains in the mouth for quite some time. Tobacco later on.

N: Sweet spicy honey ,(woodhoney), raisins...black forest ham, slightly Burnt meat - when they grill a whole ox ... wet wood, moos, lavender..leather ..(dirtiness) cold bonfire, slight burned rubber notes. After the first sip I found the curry in the nose...

P: Sweet a mix of burnt caramel and wood honey, wood fruits also some sour fruits, smoked ham, burnt meat on a grill ( s. Nose).. burnt rubber (not too much)
    pepperr,

F: oak, some spices I think curry , lavender..pepper medium to long

Nice peated Highlander with more flavours still to be discovered looking forward quite mature and complex for the low age very active casks here ...dirty but not too dirty with a certain funk an a curry note (never had that).. improved after some weeks...like a walk over some mid age market with oriental traders.. 2 points up for that memory.
