The third release in the hugely popular Renaissance Series from Teeling. This has been aged for a total of 18 years with a final finishing period in Muscat wine casks. Offering a different style to the previous releases this is very much in the tropical fruit spectrum with mango, pineapple and citrus to the fore and even a touch of mint and pear drops. A lively and more-ish single malt that is best served straight in a good nosing glass where the vibrant aromas can be savoured. Limited to just 9000 bottles and bottled at 46%.

It got a lot better two weeks after the bottle was first opened. Started at 84, now jumped to 87pt.

Mandarin oranges and wildflowers, followed by banana French toasts. Custard, hazelnut sauce and started filling the glass with warm spices and slightly punchy black peppers.
    • Taste
      87 87
Orange with pith, slightly sweet and bitter, soon there were mangos, gooseberries and unripe pineapples.
    • Finish
      88 88
Beetroot, unripe pineapples, konjac. A lot of mangos after a couple of weeks of oxidisation. The second half was full of bitter grape seeds.

    Über-Fruity

Teeling's first Renaissance was an 18-year-old finished in Madeira and I found it to be nothing short of brilliant. The second on Australian Shiraz Casks was absolutely not inferior. The expectations for this third release – launched more than a year ago and this time with a finish at Muscat Wine Casks – are also high.

Oh, wow, I've only just poured out the whisky and the room fills with delicious notes of tropical fruit. Nice and waxy on pineapple, quince, apricots and a cartload of fresh mango. Bergamot oil, aniseed and the zest of an overripe orange. And then a good dash of acacia honey on top. You guessed it: blissful nose that is thoroughly Irish.

The body is fairly light, but on the palate it is an absolute feast! All the tropical fruit of the nose comes back, but is enhanced with strawberries, fresh figs, peach and green grapes. Soft bitterness as of grapefruit, while an equally soft touch of pepper gives it some warmth. A fresh lift is provided by something reminiscent of menthol. What a belter!

The finish is long, über-fruity and gently drying.

This Renaissance also exceeds expectations. Is worth his 130 EUR! Thank you, Benny, for this pure indulgence.

One of the best Irish in a long time. Complex and very balanced with extremely ingenious fruit notes.

    nose

Exotic fruity notes of pineapple, unripe mango, papaya, oranges, but also green apple, in addition to the beautiful fruity notes, there is also a lovely sweetness of white chocolate, fondant and marzipan.

The nose is reflected well in the taste, with clear wood spice in the finish. This is how it becomes in the finish, almond-tart, but also walnut-like with vanilla and cocoa. The finish remains medium to long.

Very fruity, with white grapes, ripe mango, lemon pie and milk chocolate. A dessert whisky, with the Muscat wine influence being quite noticeable. Some greener, drying notes and the lack of depth prevent me from scoring higher.

Baked apples, slightly sour, delicately vanilla. We smell the wine, with pear juice, Chasselas grapes, and candy sugar. Very nice balance. On the other hand, the mouth seems to me a little too light compared to this very pleasant nose. Spices, orange jam, quince, dried apricots. Red plums. Very long, woody finish, on cereals and vanilla. Wheat, cola. Spring water, which runs between the rocks. Humus.

A beautiful, old and very fruity Irishman.
    • Nose
      90 90
Lovely, light and almost flowery fruit aromas, after a while something spicy, vanilla and marzipan is added.
    • Taste
      89 89
In the taste you can find many aromas of the nose, but here more wood notes come through.
    • Finish
      86 86
Rather medium length and not as complex as taste and especially the nose.

  13. thijs100 scored this whisky 88 points Connoisseur

A fruity, mature Irish whisky that doesn't leave much to desire.
    • Nose
Sweet, chalky and with plenty of mango and apricots, followed by strawberry, but some aniseed as well. Then soft notes of orange zest and honeyed cereal bars.
    • Taste
Big fruits. Plenty of figs, some lime and nectarines too. Peach as well and some menthol, but also grape juice. Mouthfeel stays behind a little.
    • Finish
Somewhat drying with lingering red apples and some greener notes.
