If this Benrinnes would be bottled at higher strength it would have been a stunner. My first impression was ‘this is cherry infused rum. Fully agree with Cask88 in his notes; cherries, cane sugar, rum spices, forest fruits and some dried Middle Eastern fruits. Nice whisky at a good PQ ratio.

I must say I was rather sceptic about this one but I’m surprised. It’s actually a pleasant t dram.
    • Nose
Loads of candied red fruits like cherry and plumb initially but with a little hand warmth this dram comes to life. It releases more intensity but also it gets more dynamic. It results in giving more influence of the other cask types. That translates to cane sugar, vanilla, banana candy and mild licorice besides all the sweet sherried flavors that remain present as well. It does give quite some youthfulness but that’s not annoying at 46% I can imagine this would have been when bottled at CS.
    • Taste
On the palate it seemed to be a little disappointing at first, giving a light body, but right after thinking this it explodes inside the mouth. It gives quite some rum influences here and makes a fine combination with all the red fruits and spicy bourbon side.
    • Finish
Long. Medium dry sherried influences as well as quite some bourbon influences. Again quite strong cane sugar and vanilla flavors at the end. Over time a beautiful layer of cigar tobacco opens up. I like that a lot!

Somehow the youthfulness gives it a playful character and with the combination of casks it just works very well. If I knew this I would have grabbed a bottle at it’s release price around €53 in the Netherlands.

Interesting whisky due to the small proportion of rum barrels.

Very nice red fruity whisky, the 46% Abv fits very well. Very pleasant.

This bottling proves that a batch composition can produce a very interesting whisky compared to single casks. This is a very versatile malt, in which the influences of the PX and Rum sometimes complement and sometimes counter each other. The balance comes from the bourbon barrels in the barrel. Beautiful scents of forest fruits and honey, with meat gravy in the distance. The taste is nicely full and round but a bit too bitter and rough. The aftertaste pleasantly warming. A nice whisky to play with endlessly.
