This is definitely what I would describe as a marmite whisky. The dominant note initially is a very distinct farmyard funk note. I for one love it but I can see others definitely put off by it. Also, the appearance of this is interesting. even at room temperature the liquid appears cloudy. Non-chill filtered indeed! Value (£49) : 9/10
    • Nose
Huge farmyard funk note that I can only describe as a rotting hay or organic compost but not in a bad way (Well not for me at least). Accompanying that is some lovely demarara coated apple crumble and peaches poached in a toffee sauce. Some apricot and honey as well. Light spices with ginger biscuits and nutmeg.
    • Taste
A viscous mouthfeel. On the palate more red fruits appear with plums and morello cherries. A delicate honeyed sweetness throughout. Theres a nice bitterness of grapefruit and some dark chocolate in there balancing it out as well. The toffee coated peaches return giving this some nice syrupiness. Ginger develops into a white pepper heat. That farmyard funk has now developed into a more heavy dark dunnage note. Very nice.
    • Finish
The finish is less sweet and more oak led. Quite drying with oak spice and leather hitting the top palate. Some chocolate and espresso now with just a hint of that grapefruit still around giving it some freshness. A touch of that dunnage funk returns.

Not sure what the intentions were when crafting this Craigallachie.. feels engineered drifting from dry farmlands and stable aroma’s to an orange fruit mix to end in a winesky corner of modern day whisky land. Yeah sure it’s tasty, but that goes for pretty much most of nowadays whisky.

Pretty some red fruits, not too much alcohol, some sweet notes. Not too complex or mindblowing whisky, but good to go.

Ripe fruits, apples, some sour edge. Honey. Pretty some alcohol, a bit of prunes. Then some floral notes come in. Later on chocolate.

Still some fruits, not too alcoholic. Some chocolate. Red fruit. Pretty thick structure, honey.
    • Finish

Still quite smooth, red fruits, some more sweetness now, milk chocolate, caramel. Sugar sweetness, pretty long.
