old oak. Sufficiently strong and very soft nose with a lot of oloroso influences. The sherry has mainly left fruit in the form of plums. Little chocolate. There's smoke in it, but all the way in the back and it's just kind of an earthy undertone. The mouthfeel is quite light but the palette is soft and round enough because there is again a lot of sherry to be found. Now the effect is not so much fruit but rather spiciness. The finish is short but pleasantly winey. Blend of 50% oloroso and 50% bourbon barrels. The sherry casks were so permeated by the oloroso that they were 'tempered' by the bourbon casks, but it remains an easy-drinking sherry bomb without a sharp edge. Not complex but that's not a problem.

Not complex but simply a very nice profile.

The cask gives mainly blackcurrant. Whiffs of caramel and smoke.

More peat. Blackcurrant, caramel and a little malt.

      Peat, burnt caramel and blackcurrant.

Quite sweet, hardly any smoke perceptible to me, the distillate clearly over-pressed by the barrels. Blindly I might have bet on an ADOS bottling.
It takes a while to get some aromatics out of the malt. After a while I can notice pear, iron, peas, pine wood and roasted almonds on the nose. Super easy sipping, then too easy for me. The malt is anything but oily, except for the sweetness, hardly anything of the first dram sticks to my palate. The second one doesn't either, maybe a little restrained smoke and a little barrel spice, which can't balance out the sweetness. This "liquor" is tasty, so you can certainly reduce the filling level quickly.
There is hardly any finish except for a slightly sticky sweetness

Mild peat blend with sherry influence. Certainly young, not too complex, but still drinkable

I really love the strong smell of fresh, raw peat.. almost like stuffing my face in a pile of mud.. then the usual suspects of red fruits, bacon and black tea.. nice!
    • Taste
      86 86
more like a concoction of brown sugar and spices, than a real whisky (but what is a real whisky, anyway?!?).. it arrives a little thin, despite the very rich, dark colour.. almost like there is a wealth of aromas, but they are very far away.. like listening to a possibly nice tune from behind a glass door that makes all the sounds muffled.. I miss the beautiful peat from the nose, it is nowhere to be found here.. still, as others have said, a nice drink to drink.. I’m curious how my non whisky-drinking friends will find this…
    • Finish
      83 83
little spicy.. little sweet.. some mocha.. again, looks like this could have been so much more, but isn’t.. I guess this is what hs305’s tyrade was about, but I have never tasted a Black Bowmore for instance, so I don’t suffer as much.. wood grows stronger after awhile and make the mouth pucker.. will drop a few points

Raisins and dates complemented by cherries is what first comes to mind. Some more fruity notes like plums and cranberries. The typical Ardmore characteristics comes through. Some peat and smoke, but only mild. Followed by hints of bacon and tabacco. At the end I smell some syrup.
    • Taste
      87 87
Starting with sweet fruits like raisins, dates and some young sherry. More sweet notes follow like strawberries and raspberries. Little hints of peat and smoke, but with some more iodine. More sweet notes like caramel and forestfruit-syrup. At the end I detect some hazelnuts, cinnamon and a little note of oak.
    • Finish
      86 86
Medium-long. A little raisin and great raspberry notes lingers on. Cinnamon complemented by licorice and some iodine after.

[December, 2021] I found this dram in this year's advents calendar...

...and this is absolutely not my whisky style because its profile is both immature and unbalanced with rather unpleasant flavours to me (but it is very okay if others like it). This simply confirms to me that it is not possible to rush the maturation of malt whisky without lowering the quality significantly. Welcome to the fantastic new world of underaged malt whisky!
    • Nose
      78 78
The colour is amontillado sherry and the nose offers a double immature profile of underaged malt and not-matured-at-all sherry wine. Quite interesting to experience such a "childish" mixture but to be honest: I do not enjoy it, sorry folks.
    • Taste
      80 80
The taste is about the same: The flavours of unfinished malt and pre-sherry wine combine to a "paedophilic" profile which is neither balanced nor enjoyable to me (I do not like paedophilic stuff anyways). After some chewing the taste turns to the bitter side of the woods (tannins at work) which I do not like either. Water does not release any new impressions, sorry but I do not like this dram neither neat nor reduced.
    • Finish
      78 78
The dram arrives warming but without any significant coating effect on my palate. There are some bitter-drying moments from heavy woods which are a little distracting. The finish is long but just because of the winey flavours, the malt is gone very quickly. Again, there is a minor drying mouthfeel towards the end.

Good PLV. Nice and easy to drink.
    • Nose
      86 86
Fruit. Peat. I hardly notice campfire smoke. Red fruitiness with syrupy sweetness. Plum and hazelnut.
    • Taste
      86 86
Soft, some peat and minimal smoke, more plum and red fruit and again a light fruit syrup sweetness.
    • Finish
      85 85
Warming. Plum stays with me for a short to a maximum of medium length.

Nice whisky, attractive combination of subtle peat and red fruits. The nose is the most versatile part, where the body is quite smooth.
    • Nose
      87 87
Fruity and peaty. Bonfire smoke, red fruits, apple sirup, and some alcohol. Prunes. Nuts. Lovely nose, with this attractive smoky edge.
    • Taste
      85 85
Smooth, some peat and smoke, prunes, red fruit, still a bit of sirup.
    • Finish
      86 86
Now more power, warming feeling in the belly. Smoky, some red fruits, prunes. Middle long finish.

So I don't like peated whisky, but Cask1988 convinced me I should try this one.
Quite suprisingly this is something I can handle.
    • Nose
      87 87
Indeed mildly peated, this I can handle. In the background there is the sherry and oddly there is a hint of freshness like mint in the background too.
There are some farmy notes coming up after a while, not bad at all, quite complimantairy.
    • Taste
      86 86
Sweet and round arrival. A little hint of the peat in the background. There is some dark chocolate and tobacco in here.
    • Finish
      86 86
Medium length. Here shows the bourbon its face. More vanilla and caramel. Fades away a tad smokey.

  23. Cask1988 did not rate this whisky Connoisseur

Ardmore & Sherry is, for me, just a winning combination almost every time! This is no exception. I had taken the fact that small batch went to original collection en would no longer be CS with quite some scepsis but for just €43 a bottle this wasn’t particularly what you call a dilemma to buy or not to buy. Even at such young age, since the peat is nice and active and works well with the sherried character. And since there are also bourbon casks involved I expect this to be a pleasant balance between the two.
    • Nose
It’s a bit shy at the start but a drop of water and some warmth solve that. Once it pops open your in for quite a treat. Instantly a full flavored and rich nose. Dark fruity tea and forest fruits all over the place. Tobacco, hazelnuts and leather in the background.
    • Taste
Sweet and very palatable. Very thick body. Oranges wrapped in milk chocolate and whipped cream. Mild and earthy peat mid palate. Black tea and cinnamon with a whiff of clove.
    • Finish
Lovely finish. It’s actually quite gentle. Rich flavors of (again) forest fruits an nuts. But also something like cream butter cookies stuffed with berries and vanilla.

This is just a lovely dram! Despite of what the color might suggest, this is definitely not a modern ‘glensherry’, but a great balance between bourbon and sherry casks.

    • Taste

Chocolate, cherries and a hint of honey.
    • Finish
      85 85
Short finish with cocoa and a slightly tart cherry.

Awesome price quality whisky! Ardmore and sherry appear to be a solid combination. This Ardmore offers a fresh, sweet and earthy profile. I’ve got sweet dark forest fruits especially blackberries, currants, oranges in milk chocolate, sweet bbq sauce, earthy peat and dried tobacco leaves. Dangerously drinkable.
