Very tasty and interesting, finally a Compass Box-Edition again that is really worth the money!
    • Nose
      90 90
Very balanced, creme brulee by the campfire, vanilla and apricot bag with a glass of limoncello and cinnamon waffles - not a completely unsavory conglomerate.
    • Taste
      90 90
First of all a clear smokiness, a piece of thermo spruce in the fire, the supple oily with honey is present with ripe lemons and salt spray. After a while, sweeter pastry notes and grapefruit fillets with pink pepper to announce the finale.
    • Finish
      88 88
Balanced and yet still alive for a while, the great variety of flavors remains.

    Composition:
    42.6% Mortlach 18y.o. (Recharred barrel)
    14.6% Deanston 14y.o. (Refill Hogshead)
    2.5% Deanston 17y.o. (Refill Sherry-Seasoned Butt)
13.1% Glen Elgin 11y.o. (Recharred barrel)
    5% Glen Elgin 20y.o. (Refill Sherry-Seasoned Butt)
    5.4% Laphroaig 15y.o. (Recharred Hogshead)
16.8% Highland Malt Blend 11y.o. (Custom French Oak Barrel)

Direct hit! It is pleasantly mild (maybe it just seems to me that way after all the sixty percent of the last time), but in terms of aroma it is really broad and also goes great with its intense, light fruitiness, elegant refill sherry flavor with a very gentle peat kick into the deep. Everything comes together wonderfully, looks lively and offers a lot of variety. I have already tried a few of the Compass Boxes, this one meets my taste best so far.

Rice pudding with cinnamon. Creamy ice cream with pieces of fruit: peach, strawberry. Cherry syrup. Everything pleasantly sweet. In addition, primarily beautiful, velvety vanilla barrel notes; the warm, darker flavor of the European barrels is discreetly in the background, I think my association with milk coffee still belongs to these barrels. When I rub the malt in my hands, I also have the medicinal peat from the 5% Laphroaig. I didn't even notice them on the first nose in the glass. And then I have sun-dried straw and the flavorful herb honey, as I know it from Deanston. Also some beeswax, very fine! With its 46% it has a very mild effect. In the second nose I also have a few crisp, dry Fino-Sherry notes.
    • Taste
      91 91
Light fruity and now noticeably medically peaty. Cool mouthfeel. It is made of material with straw (I really like that). And then an almost tropical, juicy fruitiness is in the foreground. I would say fully ripe honeydew melon and papaya. This also holds up very nicely and is framed by some milk coffee and dark chocolate with candied cherry pieces.
    • Finish
      91 91
Mildly fruity and increasingly spicy wood with a good load of candied ginger and red and black pepper (which are not spicy). This pepperiness is offset by fine toasted notes, new leather and a little beeswax. From sip to sip, it gains vanilla-light fruity intensity and a hint of tar lingers on the tongue for a medium length of time.

    • Nose
      88 88
Spices, resinous, bark, walnut, a bit of citrus peel, dried malt, cinnamon, unripe green apple, butter. Then grass, slightly floral, more and more green apple. Slightly salted and smoked citrus peel.
    • Taste
      88 88
Green apple juice with peel, got a bit richer after seconds. Green grapes. Grass, anise, pepper, honey green tea and a bit of toffee towards the end.
    • Finish
      87 87
fresh peat air bomb explodes, pepper, hay, tannin. Vanilla in about 10s. Vegetative/moss peat if you inhale now, not obvious. Woody bitterness at the end.

Nose: citrus, satsuma, candy, hint of peat, hint of green apple. Arrival is pleasant and fruity, with banana getting dominant throughout the development. Strong, dry, woody to the finish, slightly filming, fatty, grilled meat, then very very dry, musky and ashy in the aftertaste.

  5. zaphod155 scored this whisky 90 points Expert Senior

Strong, but still harmonious. Sweet, but also spicy. Creamy and dry at the same time. If the spiciness weren't too dominant for me in the end, this whiskey would have my unlimited enthusiasm.
    • Nose
Light, slightly tart berry fruits. Glucose sweetness and a hint of yeast dough. A little vanilla and very subdued smoke tones. Then it gets spicier and roasted coffee beans come through. More light fruits appear.
    • Taste
Fruity sweetness, then honey and a soft, but still distinct sharpness. Oak seasoning. Dry creaminess. Then suddenly the smoke emerges from the background. The sweetness and the flavor are in balance.
    • Finish
The creamy, dry mouthfeel with a warming spiciness stays in the mouth for a long time and brings a little dark chocolate at the very end.

  7. Totoro scored this whisky 87 points Connoisseur

Boasts an overachiever nose that almost justifies the price, but the taste is more uneven.
    • Nose
      89 89
The older components are apparent on the nose with a well-oaked, savory/meaty aspect (the Mortlach) followed by a smoky/dirty/medicinal harbor-water impression (the Laphroaig). Perhaps some faint refill sherry nuts & fruits in the background, but other than that, it's all ex-bc aromas with a good balance of sweetness and spice. No alcoholic nip in the nose whatsoever, super round and smooth. At first I was unsure about the peated aspect on the nose, but after I while I realized it actually makes the whisky appear a bit older than it actually is (fun fact: its weighted arithmetic mean is a mere 15,24 years of age).
    • Taste
      86 86
Laphroaig and oak spice in the lead. Then a nicely dense and oily mouthfeel and a good deal of sweetness. Boiled apple and herbal honey. Ends more on earthy and twiggy/sappy notes. Not as complex and layered as the nose; the briny peat and peppery oak ultimately dominate the other aspects.
    • Finish
      86 86
Pretty long, thanks to the smoke, but it also drowns out some of the more subtle flavors and ends up making the finish rather simple. A lot of pickled ginger, and a bit of salt and citrus here as well.

This is a nice floral, vanilla, malt, toasted marshmallow blend, pepper and oak balance the sweet side nicely.
    • Nose
      89 89
Sweet burnt sugars, floral, vanilla milkshake, malt, whisp of peat and cinnamon
    • Taste
      87 87
Vanillas, light, creamy, charred marshmellow, easy drinking, oak
    • Finish
      87 87
White pepper, still vanilla milkshake esq, the oak is lightly drying, tropical fruits emerge after all is said and done.

A little smoky and full of yellow fruits and berries, a cocktail.
    • Nose
      88 88
Melon, yellow apple, pear and dried apricot, custard. A little smoke, which, unfortunately, seemed to me damp, basement.
    • Taste
      87 87
The taste is sweet, melon and even a little banana, yellow apple, watery, smoky.
    • Finish
      86 86
      Sweet, fruity, not long-lasting.
