  1. Official tasting note

Caribbean Rum -Cask Finish- from Bushmills

Bushmills single malt finished in hand selected Caribbean rum casks and blended with smooth triple distilled Irish grain whiskey for subtile fruit and dry spice flavours.

This Bushmills first matured in ex-bourbon and sherry barrels and then received a finish in rum barrels. For the finish, the barrels had been filled with rum from the Caribbean for at least seven years to soak up the intense, tropical-sweet aromas. The single malt with the rum finish was then married to the classic Irish Grain Whiskey to create dry, spicy flavors.

Sugar sweets, baked bananas, popcorn and melted butter.
    • Taste

Floral with the sweetness of caramelized bananas and vanilla.
    • Finish
      82 82
Medium-long finish, soft and intense with malt and herbal notes.

Well, better than expected. The finish could have been longer, but the nose in particular is pretty impressive for an Irish whiskey (here a blend of single malt and grain whiskey) in this price range - and the taste is also quite impressive, so that all of this together for me in the In the end, you get 83 (good!) Points.

At first you are surprised at how multifaceted the nose is. Not just flavored alcohol, but beautiful fruit notes in the form of pineapple, tangerines and mashed bananas can be found, whereby the banana jam is enriched with a splash of lime juice and stands out. Basically, there is just as little spice out as a grain note. The lack of the latter speaks in my opinion for the use of high-quality barrels in connection with the use of very good grain whiskey.

Lays mild and very creamy on the tongue, also delivers the banana puree, pineapple and mandarins directly. Now here I have a lot of spice in the form of nutmeg, clove powder and pepper. Dry wood, milk chocolate, white coffee, caramel, vanilla, honey.
Nice interplay of creaminess with notes of dry wood.

Sounds spicy and dry, but doesn't stay very long. There is still a little bit of fruit left, but not so much that the individual fruits have to be fanned out here.

This expression has used rum casks from the Caribbean which have been then transported to Antrim for finishing single malt from the distillery. This whiskey has then been blended with triple-distilled grain
    • Nose
On the palate, instant sweetness exhibits in caramelized brown sugar notes, interweaving with tones of sticky toffee,
    • Taste
Immediate crisp apple freshness married with honey maltiness gives way to notes of creamy toffee and bursting exotic fruit aromas of pineapple and coconut.
    • Finish
Caribbean rum cask imparts a lingering, sugary, caramel, oak, sweet spices

    not great

Now, this isn’t one of those very complex whiskies that require a lot of thought and experience to unpack and understand it. This is easy to drink and easy to understand. Not every expression has to be highly complex to be enjoyable, and I enjoyed the simplicity and accessibility of this.

Very bouncy, very light, very crisp. This would be another one of my go to whiskies whenever I am craving some Irish.

    • Nose
In the glass, the whiskey is a golden pineapple juice colour.

On the nose, very aromatic, estery and incredibly floral. This leads with a very fresh and clean note with a Riesling wine-like quality. Taking centre stage are waves of honey and light caramel, accompanied by a galore of tropical fruits: pineapples, mango and dragonfruit.

Allowing this to sit for a bit longer, the fruity aromas lead on to more floral notes. Light perfumed floral notes with mainly jasmine flowers. The combination of light sweetness and jasmine flowers is reminiscent of the signature profile of Pokka Jasmine Green Tea. Specifically Pokka? Yes, specifically Pokka. My nose and palate can distinguish between this and other brands of jasmine green tea. I don’t want none of that Yeo’s or Heaven and Earth shiz.

At the back is a minor sheen of some mentholic herbs- freshly mashed peppermint leaves and rosemary.
    • Taste
On the palate, refreshingly crisp, sweet and light bodied and silky in texture. As you swallow the first siip, the opening flavours are sugary, bright and estery in a distinctively Irish whiskey way that gently permeates your nose canal.

A very subtle touch of wood tannins- perhaps from the rum cask, but this bitterness opens up a lot of depth and character. The sugary sweetness develops to darker notes of caramelised brown sugar and toffee fudge. Once again, this bitterness is so subtle, some people might barely notice any bitterness at all.

The flavours are also remarkably smooth and makes for an effortless drinking experience. Nothing pricks your tongue or palate. This friendly spirit really just rolls down your throat (perhaps in the context of an Asian horror film this isn’t a good thing).

To be sure, the palate is much more floral than fruity. The notes of fruits on the nose don’t quite come through on the palate, apart from the sweetness of pineapples.
    • Finish
The finish, is quite long with vanilla custard and a slight effervescent tartness of fizzy soda. Actually, the sweetness and fizzy tartness is a little similar experience as sipping a Peel Fresh yuzu juice.

Right towards the end, there is a little bit of spice zing spice and growing peppery warmth.

Aroma: I was expecting exotics, but it's more like an apple, honey and a lot of malt. Quite fresh. No miracle, but it can be sniffed.

Taste: Syrup-sweet, but not as soft and straightforward as American Oak. But it's kind of "flavored". Caramel and sliced peaches. It's not bad, but not much good.

    Finish: Sweet, light finish. Caramel.

Overall: I don't usually like rum and whiskey very much, I was expecting something else anyway. This is smellable, drinkable, quite bland and sweet. It's definitely not bad, although I'll almost certainly never buy it again.
