  6. Albaron scored this whisky 79 points Specialist

The acidity is strong and disturbs pretty much, in addition, he also has a certain heat, which I do not like. Otherwise, a fresh whisky, uncomplicated and delicious
    • Nose
light alcohol, but also immediately fresh citrus notes, vanilla, light maltiness, toffee cream, menthol fumes, a herbal mix, a few apricots
    • Taste
strong onset, acidic and dry, fresh citrus notes, the menthol comes here quickly, the acidity flashes through again, some malt then leads into the finish.
    • Finish
The malt swells, then the acidity, some herbs, the toffee cream and finally quite strong tannins

  7. Tom na Gruagaich scored this whisky 85 points Connoisseur

Harmonious whisky, nutty, light sherry notes, fruity, soft but spicy and not uninteresting. Somehow it always fits.

Great step up from the younger versions. Elegant and lively citrus, apricot, repressed tropical fruits (mango? papaya?) and some nuts. Arran is starting to get the needed wood influence to be rather complex.

  25. Shane_IL scored this whisky 85 points Expert Senior

This is a really well made dram, bourbon sweet and complex.
    • Nose
Had to let this one sit and settle down for about 10min. Very fragrant peaches. Potpourri. Fresh blossoms in the spring. Sticky fruit punch. Very juicy citrus (fruit not rind). Cereals. Wet grass. Vanilla. Coconut ice. Caramel candies. Hint of sweet red fruits or candied raisins. Slight woodspice.
    • Taste
Sticky toffee pudding with vanilla custard. Lovely gentle floral notes. Crystallized ginger. Woodspice. Slight hint of char on the swallow, probably from first fill bourbon casks.
    • Finish
Long and warm. Dry wood on the tongue. Grassy notes in the mouth. A lovely sweet and salty note lingers for ages.

  26. hartist scored this whisky 86 points Expert Senior

A nice dram in the absolute; at the selling price a Must.
    • Nose
Rather corpulent and fresh. All the scent of good casks (sherry and bourbon in this case): honey, dried fruit, coconut, sweet caramel, spices, vanilla and ..... wood. Also fresher fruits (pears, bananas), finally grassy and floral scents (thick herbal tea with cut grass, pine, eucalyptus).
    • Taste
Fresh but fat and quite rich. Imagine a cocktail of fragrant and spicy spices (ginger, cinnamon pepper, lemon confit, oriental brine sauce) bound by liquid beeswax with a creamy fruit compote (melon, papaya, peach) and topped with an emulsion herbal and floral (peppermint, herbs pastis) with a rough and slightly salty character.
    • Finish
Good length, on a mix of sweet, spicy and bitter notes of the most beautiful effect.

Gold dress. Fruity lemon nose, peach, the dilution brings a sweet strawberry and raspberry, aeration of wet wood. The attack is sweet on the strawberry. The medium reveals bitterness as well as light, well-melted tannins that assert themselves in a peppery finish of medium length. Almond retro-olfaction. Pretty easy to drink, slightly sweet, on red fruits. Much better than 10 years old.

light smoke, sweet cereals, citrus, disinfectants, wipes, apricots, salty / maritime, light, slightly alcoholic / spritig, Amer. Oak, hay, dry-spicy, fuller in the mouth than the nose suggests, very "defined", with some water comes great, sweet malt, the smoke becomes clearer and the malt more complex, the sprittiger disappears, vanilla comes, the texture is buttery ... great island malt from ex-bourbon barrels, wins by adding water!

Notes are based on a 20 cl glass with approximately 2 tea spoons of water.
    • Nose
Vanilla, bourbon cask, sweetness, characteristically Arran
    • Taste
Surprisingly little vanilla, cinnamon, very fruity, intense sweetness, brown sugar, rich,
    • Finish
Very nice development, from intense sweetness to citrus "zest", long and dry finish.

  33. pierrethesnack scored this whisky 88 points Member Senior

A delightfully sweet and fruity whisky. Needs some water to reach its full potential. The development of the intense "zesty" sweetness is spectacular.  With the right amount of water, you'll get a fresh citrus note. At 50£ in Norway, this is a really good buy. The best Arran I've tasted.

Actually I prefer the 10yo Arran to this 14yo.
This has more oak influence, which isn't too bad, but the other aromas and flavours can't keep up so it is just not as well balanced as the 10yo.

From the 10th I was a little disappointed, as this overall was too weak. Well without having high expectations for the 14er, I was pleasantly surprised. I like it a lot better. The flavors are present, sweet and round without being boring.
    • Nose
sweet, creamy vanilla ice cream, poached peaches, hides a slightly semi-dry white wine note, delicate toffee
    • Taste
slightly creamy sweet mouthfeel, a little bit of pepper added, caramelised sour apples, hint of bitter almond, well balanced

    Notes by Arran;

Colour: Sunset CopperNose: Dried fruits, vanilla and toffee up front. With a little water a salty tang appears, with caramelised fruits indicating a depth of flavour to come.Palate: An initial burst of brine leads onto warming toffee apples and hazelnuts. This is followed by dates, chocolate orange and spiced tea cake. The mouthfeel is overwhelmingly rich and weighty.Finish: A trademark Arran finish with cinnamon spices leading back to where the experience began, with a classic island-style salty wave balancing the sweet fruit of the palate.

    Aroma: citrus, vanilla, mint, pear, caramel, applesauce, exotic fruits;

    Taste: sweet, beautiful malty, strong, again mint, caramel, very little oak, licorice;

    Finish: medium long, malty, creamy;

Conclusion: Very yummy, round, PLV OK, but there are better whiskys for 40 euros! As the 10-he made nice, I taste a little better.

    • Nose
Very fruity and sweet, citrus and vanilla, caramel, pineapples, peaches, ripe apples and some pears.I also find some herbal and grassy notes like rhubarb, which reminds me on Bruichladdich 10-years-old
    • Taste
Sweet and creamy with exotic character... pineapples, banana and nectarine. Quite oaky for 14 years. Mixture of dark and milk chocolate, some grapes and some caramel.
    • Finish

    Good value for money whisky.
    • Nose
Malty and very fresh with a lot of citrus, freshly cut grass and vanilla.  The sherry influence is noticeable with some faint fudge. There is also an off-note that I find hard to describe, and don't really like all that much.
    • Taste
Pretty dry, some saw dust, spices and pepper. A little bit of mint and caramel as well. Not very complex, but it is fairly balanced.
    • Finish
A short finish. Nutty, malty and caramel.

Arran - a distillery that I have not had on the screen so far. The sample was just a random addition to an order. But: You should keep an eye on it ;-)
    • Nose
First nose: sweet, very sweet. However, a bit alcoholic notes (not unpleasant), but good, so has 46%.

The sweetness is definitely raisins and vanilla, with a tart caramel. Somewhat sweet fruitiness in the background (towards pineapple or honeydew melon) and a hint of saltiness.
    • Taste
Strong roasted hazelnut on the first start. A little tender bitterness. Very gentle traces of the caramel and the fruit (which is now clearly pineapple).

The second sip rather fresh-floral (freshly cut grass) in the beginning, but then immediately the hazelnut again, this time softer. Also less bitterness, but a little more sweetness and fruit.

When diluted with a little water, it softens, the hazelnuts do not get that strong, but more sweetness. Overall, a little rounder and more harmonious than the nose.
    • Finish
Rather dry, medium long. It remains salt and the now becoming clearer (but still pleasantly mild) bitterness. In addition a certain spice, which goes direction white pepper. Over time, the mild bitterness remains, to which now but a little vanilla and pineapple join.

Typical ex-bourbon whisky with a slightly higher ABV and no
chill-filtration, which is not very exciting, but very drinkable. The
finish is boring, but the exhibits some complexity with its evolving
aromas. I sampled this from a small 5cl bottle.
    • Nose
Malty, sweet honey, and green bananas. Vodka infused grapefruit with a
fresh resinous licorice note. Noticeable alcohol. After a while I notice
more floral aromas, reminiscent of rose petals.
    • Taste
Vivid fruitiness, caramel, and honeyed menthol. Slightly bitter with
more licorice, but contrary to the nose, there is very little sweetness
here. The coastal note is indicated by a minor briny sensation.
    • Finish
      Medium-short. Moderately oaky.

The nose is fruity with a sea breeze over it. The mouth and finish are marked by caramelized fruit with a hint of salt on the end. For the anecdote, this whisky strongly improves after the opening of the bottle; it shows its full potential after several months of opening!

This is a very good Arran, putting the younger version in its shadow
with one hand tied behind its back. Tasteful, complex and creamy. What more
    could you ask for?
    • Nose
Ah, those two extra years (and the sherry casks in the mix) have done
wonders for this nose. It is a lot fresher than its younger brother and shows a
lot more fruit. I get white fruit, apricots, peach and sultanas. A bit of
potpourri as well. Freshly cut grass. Honey and some vanilla make it very
sweet. Give it another five minutes and you will even get a hefty helping of
      marzipan. This is very good.
    • Taste
It is creamy on the palate, starting on breakfast cereals and liquorice,
before you are handed a wonderful basket of fruits. Limes, oranges, apples,
pears and some pineapple. Lots of vanilla. Big oak countering the whole, making
      this Arran well balanced. Good!
    • Finish
In the finish, that is medium in length, the spices clamour for
attention. Is that a salty twist at the death?

Excellent whisky, superb balance between the sherry and bourbon flavours. Very good value for the money.
    • Nose
First strikes the sherry with toffee sweetness and dried fruits. Then more fresh fruits (apples, peaches) and herbs (anised, cinnamon and a little mint). Later getting some nutty notes. Very nice balance!
    • Taste

Take the original fresh character of our renowned 10 year-old and add a layer of intensity and fruitiness.....presenting the 14 year-old! It was named Best Single Malt Island (non-Islay) 13 to 20 Years at the prestigious World Whiskies Awards 2011 run by Whisky Magazine.

Tasting Notes by Gavin D Smith for Whisky Advocate

    This

expression from the Isle of Arran distillery appeared in 2010 and

one-third of the component whiskies were matured in European oak casks

while two-thirds came from American oak. Very fragrant and perfumed on

the nose, with peaches, brandy, and ginger snaps, plus vanilla and mild

oak. Smooth and creamy on the palate, with spicy summer fruits,

apricots, and hazelnuts. The lingering finish is spicy, buscuity, and

slowly drying, with just a hint of salt. 86 Points

"Released in late 2010, this Arran 14yo is intended to be the standard

issue bottling, taking over from the 12yo that appeared in late 2008.

As has always been the case with Arran`s malt, this has been neither

coloured nor chill-filtered and has been bottled at a sensible drinking

strength of 46%, for which the management deserve maximum kudos."

Honestly, I hadn't experienced what I have expected to gain from the 14-year-old Arran. Well, it's not half a bad whisky all right, quite the contrary, decent and competitive stuff. For some reason though, I presume this single malt might merely benefit if it'd been been a couple of years younger.
    • Nose
Cut fresh cucumber, pumpkin, straw, butterscotch, fine dusty nuance (soda, castor sugar?), candied fruits, salty nuttiness. Funnily, the fragrance reminds me of light Irish whiskys a wee bit.
    • Taste
Watery-thin, cleansing - Irish analogy again, as if being triple-distilled. Dry sherry (fino/manzanilla), dried figs, cereals, hard (not sweet) pear, cream crackers, some woody tannins, evident wood presence influenced probably by Spanish oak.
    • Finish
Rather short and inexpressive, by and large. Custard cream biscuits, shortbreads, cornflour, tropical white fruit, pineapple?, slightly sour, briny aftertaste. Nothing special for me is here to look for.

Find it very complex, hard to rate. Enjoyed drinking it - beware though, hits the head like a train if you drink too fast.

Single dram note: Pleasant, round, sweet w good wood influence.

This is very nice whisky. I'd be happy to drink it anytime.
    • Nose
I'm still struggling to identify an Arran style, especially when the
12yo and this 14yo are so different from the old 10yo. Still this is
very nice indeed with stewed apples and pears in custard.
    • Taste
More soft white fruits with icing sugar.
    • Finish
Medium length, mouth-watering, hints of pineapple.

Fresh fruits with vanilla and pepper. Sweet and very well balanced, fresh fruits with toffee and hot spices.  The finish is rather long, even with peppery spices. For me the best Arran until now. (from them i tasted so far).

One of the best from Arran I have had the pleasure of sampling.
    • Nose
Sweet. Caramel covered apples.  Fruit salad.  Butter cookies.  Vanilla.  Some coconut and banana.
    • Taste
Fruity and fresh.  Vanilla pound cake.  Coconut pie. Tarragon? Some nutmeg.  Lemon squares.
    • Finish
Salty.  Hot and long.  Soft fruit.

    • Nose
Butter, lemons, marzipan. A little bit of vanilla, dried fruits.
    • Taste
Bit dry at the beginning. After that flowers, mix of spice. Oak and bitter chocolate.
    • Finish
      Longer, spiced finish.

I really like this Arran.  The salty waves
    balancing the sweet fruit of

    the palate..
    • Nose

      Dried
fruits, vanilla and toffee up front.

      With a
little water a salty tang appears, with

      caramelised
      fruits.to come.
    • Taste
      An
initial burst of brine leads ontowarming
toffee apples and hazelnuts. This isfollowed by
dates, chocolate orange and spicedtea cake.
The mouthfeel is rich and weighty.
    • Finish

Finish: A classical Arran finish with cinnamon
      spices and saltiness.
