What I am drinking is the 2014 version. Borrow a place. scbp-5631, the flavor orientation is good, a bit like the weak ester version of Hampden 46 with maraschino. As far as personal taste is concerned, I hope that while having a fuller and more impactful body performance, I hope that the stimulus will be reduced.
    • Nose
      89 89
Almond toffee 7, chamomile 2, turpentine 3, butter 2, salt, salted salmon meat, boiled trotters, with a strong sweetness. Under maraschino, it seems to be an obscure and secret sweet papaya, packaged dried mango, cake Candied pineapple sticks. 89
    • Taste
      87 87
The buttery aroma is obvious, six points of heavier salt and three points of almond toffee, chamomile, turpentine, slightly ambiguous citrus acid, and salt. The wine is weak, the fat is medium, the salt is medium, the knot is slightly simple and irritating, lacquer, slightly bitter, the grapefruit skin is bitter, slightly astringent, and the roundness is not high. p89b85
    • Finish
      84 84
Green pepper, chopped red pepper, salt, heavier tannins, bitterness further evolved, becoming the bitterness of dried grapefruit. 84

Not the right whiskey for me.
    Hence my somewhat low rating.

    Weller 12yo 45%.

At Melody Bar, Hammersmith, Sep 2021.

Aroma is toffee apple, caramelised, some woody char. Good aroma. Quite 'deep' aroma notes, like dark caramel. Pleasant stuff, with the vibes you'd hope for in a well aged bourbon.

Taste is rich at the low ABV, very easy on the palate, dark caramel again, vaguely chocolatey, dark varnished wood, the booze starts showing up on the front of the palate as a ‘saltiness’ and spreads across the tongue over time. The salt becomes dominant but the dark caramelised notes are always there too.

The booze definitely starts to dominate the flavour over time (mint, salt) even though it's not hot at all, if that makes sense. Toasted oak and papery vibes linger on. It's pretty enjoyable and I'm glad I tried it but it's currently retailing at £120 in the UK, and I would only pay around the £40 mark personally. 3.375/81

    • Nose
      87 87
Vanilla, honey, burnt sugar, peppermint, subtle
Wood notes. Light, hard-to-define red and yellow
Fruit notes. A nice snoop who with warmth and
Time in the glass keeps getting better.
    • Taste
      85 85
Very soft, oily and bitter - sweet. Honey, nutmeg
and peppery tingling. As expected, some coconut too.
    • Finish
      83 83
Woody - peppery finish. Slightly bitter - sweet with
      fading spicy notes.

There is not much between the 12 and the special reserve but in my opinion the SR just edges it. This was a sample courtesy of cfosterk.

    Really a great bourbon! Enthusiasm: Nose: 5/5 Palate: 4/5 Final: 3/5 Whiskey n ° 1435
    • Nose
Waxed wood, deep, then glue and creme brulee. Light and elegant. Round on caramel, more and more intense. Gorgeous !
    • Taste
We find the sensations of the nose with a touch very fluid and delicate.
    • Finish
Rather solvated, on sweet spices. A little lack of roundness - almost sour even at first sip. Much more creamy afterwards.

finally, the first bourbon i can say i truly love, very good sweetness, balance and elegance, followed by a blast of fried coconut milk residue (known as latik in the philippines) which goes really well with the bourbon and brings back childhood memories

Just tried the "raised wheat" older version of weller 12... noticeable fresher nose and also stickier palate. I scored that version an 88 points, as compared to this version, which was 85 points for me.

Marzipan, rum raisins, full portion of Crème Brulée, roasted almond, vanilla, but also a fine spiciness from the wood. Mouth:

Ritter Sport Rum Grape Nut, white pepper, caramel sweet. At the end it gets drier and in the finish the oak presses neatly. Really delicious, something really sweet for in between, but without being sweet. Emissive power and oak spice make it nice and tasty. Very delicious 86 points

    • Nose
caramelized sugar, vanilla and green apple
Maple syrup, mint and dusty forest floor

      Chocolate and spices
    • Finish

enjoyable, alright. Easy-drinking wheated whiskey for sure. But I still find
this kind-of underwhelming. Especially these solventy notes always remind me of
bottom-shelf Bourbon. I will keep on sampling here and there though.
    • Nose
oak, vanilla, and sappy green undertones. Solvents, varnish, and dried banana
chips. With some air, the oak transforms into more of a perfumy character.
      Cinnamon and ground walnuts perhaps?
    • Taste
arrival. Bitter-sweet sawdust, licorice, savory caramel. More vanilla, toffee, herbal
      tea, and honey.
    • Finish
Juicy tannins and more of the same. Toffee and vanilla, mixed with a good dose
      of herbal liqueur.

This is my first wheated whiskey so I don't have anything to compare it to. Wasn't quite as complex as I would have hoped, but I'm happy I bought the bottle, I wouldn't have paid secondary for it though. I would say this is a great after dinner whiskey to go with some New York cheesecake or a rich chocolate cake. Definitely has me wanting to try more of the Weller and PVW lineup!
    • Nose
Sweet. Lots of rich almost what you might call "dark" caramel. Spiced baked apples. Honestly it smells delicious, like you would want to pour it over cheesecake. What else? Cinnamon. Sugar, if that makes sense.
    • Taste
It is what I would call quite smooth, moderately oily, coats the tongue. Not as sweet as I thought it would be, but still sweet. I think I can taste where the wheat comes instead of rye. Vanilla and almond. A slightly bitter char character comes on at the end. But wait, there's now some leather and tobacco warming up as well!

These days it is getting harder and harder to get hold of one of these alluring Pappy Van Winkle expressions. And even if you are lucky enough to find a bottle, you must willing to reach deep in your pockets making it a very costly affair. Meanwhile, the W. L. Weller 12 Years Old is giving you close to the same experience for a fraction of the price.

N: Cream soda, toffee, caramel, vanilla, creamy varnish, chocolate and a hint of lemon & oranges.

T: Rich, natural bourbon fruits, chocolate and herbal, fresh with some hot spirit and a waxy mouthful with a consistent delivery. High calibre casks are apparent on the nose and the palate which help these presentations from Buffalo trace avoid [to an extent] off key notes associated with poorer casks used in blends and large vattings. The presentation here is clean but never clinical.

F: Varnished vanillas, single grain whiskey like. Long rich finish with mint and rosemary herbal essence.

C: Lots of power coming from this 45% bottling. Its excellent from start to finish. Did this WLW 12 get better or am i starting to appreciate bourbons?

    Scores a B

C: Very much a combined taste with the whole profile moving through peaks and troughs as a block. There's some roughness. Overall - good but boring.

    Scores a C+

This W.L. Weller 12 Year Old won a gold medalle in 2003 at the Wines
& Spirits Competition, but unfortunately it is no longer being made. Pity,
for this is truly good stuff.
    • Nose
Oh, my , this is something else! The nose has corn, of course, but this
is complex. Almond oil, toasted oak, honeysuckly, vanilla, wild berries. Burnt
      sugar, thym, mint. Very aromatic!
    • Taste
It is slightly oily and the wheat gives it a nice, soft attack. Midpalate,
the spices speak. Cinnamon, pepper, nutmeg. Some coconut, even. Juicy.
    • Finish
The medium long, slightly drying finish remains sweet and spicy and ends
in a note of toasted oak.
