I am very impressed with the second official bottling.
The first one still had an imbalance for me that I would not have expected from Ardnamurchan.
The second release has everything I expect from a young whisky that is supposed to show the distillery character.
    • Nose
      87 87
      Boy nose.
Slightly dirty with honey notes. Obvious smoke.
Citrus fruits, lemon zest, bread dough, sourdough, yeast, cereals.
Becomes more and more harmonious with a little time.
I don't find the sherry content of allegedly 35%, it should have been 2nd or 3rd fill.
Green apple, leafy vegetables and mineral notes.
    • Taste
      90 90
      Clear peat and sweetness.
      I really like it.
Much rounder than the first bottling.
Not very complex, it gains strength over time and then also shows fruity notes of citrus and ripe apples and pears.
    • Finish
      86 86
Medium length, round and very pleasant.
      Peat and sweetness stop nicely.

Pretty coastal but also fruity, interesting combination
    • Nose
      88 88
Little fruity, honeydew, dry hay, apple, peach, little apricot, more stone fruits, littel citric, lemon peel, little spicy, whiffs of oak wood, little seabreeze, salty, iodine - not bad
    • Taste
      87 87
Little punchy, very creamy, fruity, good sweetness, more stone fruits, little salty, hints of seaweed and smoked fish, little herbal, vegetables
    • Finish
      86 86
Long, warm, more salty, herbal, littl emore oak wood

  4. HammerHead scored this whisky 85 points Connoisseur

For the 50 - 55 euro release price it's a pretty good deal. For up to or over 100 I'd call this a big rip off.
    • Nose
      86 86
A very round nose for such a young whisky, mild peat, slight smoke, earthy and chalky, sweet and sour (almost acidic), vanilla, loads of citrus, lemon and lime, atjar, furniture polish, some silage.
    • Taste
      85 85
Full and creamy, sweet, sour, vanilla, more citrus, honied liquorice, wet hay, subtle pepper and some toasted wood.
    • Finish
      85 85
Medium length: vanilla, honey, juicy citrus fruit, liquorice, mild spices and a subtle lingering wood char note.

    • Nose
      86 86
Light and dirty with citrus notes, the characteristic has slight echoes of the Springbank 10, dry and earthy smoke, mineral, sour apple, honey.
    • Taste
      88 88
Full-bodied with delicious spices, juicy citrus fruits and fruit, then becoming drier with smoke, herbs, ginger, classic and balanced Highland profile.
    • Finish
      87 87
Long and fruity with an ideal oak influence. Apples, light acidity - and then I imagine a minimal but not disturbing youth.

P: pepper, smoke, grass, tingling on the tongue, mineral-like, wax, honey, salt water, where it already feels quite mature in the nose, you can taste the young age here

I expected more based on what I heard/ read about this whisky..
N: basic, young oak and sourness
T: again oaky, salty, lemon zest, slightly smoky
F: nothing new compared to initial taste

I’ve satisfied my curiosity about this new distillery finding a bottle of their second “dated” expression, for a quite reasonable price on the ordinary retail market.
The first impression has been quite impressive for a very young malt. It’s all about the balance: between peated and unpeated cask, between sherry and oak, floral and fruity notes with a very clean and thin mouthfeel and none of its elements clearly predominant. After a subtle nose with vanilla, fruits and fresh grass, at first taste some nearly balsamic flavors stand out immediately, with aromatic herbs and (mostly) juniper, echoing also on the not very long finish, of course justified by the young age.

After the bottle has been opened for a while, the overall balance became a bit flat, especially on the palate, upon which the surprising herbal noted soon fade, replaced by just a bit of obvious alcohol harshness.

Anyway, taking this as an early “beta” release from this new distillery, it already shows much of an interesting, well crafted and not so ordinary profile, that enhances the interest for what’s yet to come from it.

Need some age to smoothen the nose and get that sherry in place. Nonetheless, the mix & match of barley and cask did bring more complexity to the whisky.

Overall it's a well-rounded one given its age, and they've got the right level of ppm.

    N 23
The nose is clean and relatively subtle
    Essential oil-like floral fragrance
    Slightly peated to the nose
    Barley sugar
    dark chocolate
Young spirit aroma poking here and there, followed by a touch of sea salt

    P 25
    Sweet & Spicy
Creamy vanilla honey, with some ripe red apple developing in the background
Some new-make malt sweetness, accompanied by gentle smoke
Underlying bitterness from the peat and sherry tannin

    F 22
    Mid-short finish
    Mouthwarming and mildly herbaceous
Sherry notes (nuts, raisins) sparked and evaporated
    Pleasant smoked wood lingering

Good malt, I look forward to trying more mature releases

  14. aboutWhisky scored this whisky 84 points Expert Junior

On the nose, this malt is surprisingly complex and mature for its age and offers a great interplay between the two cask types used. The smoke is very nicely integrated and contributes positively to the complexity without overpowering the other aromas. In the mouth, unfortunately, he can't quite keep up with the great nose. The tart/bitter notes on the tongue are a bit too dominant for my taste.

    https://www.aboutwhisky.de/tastingnotes/ardnamurchan-ad-01-2101/
    • Nose
The start in the nose is very intense and fruity. The aroma reminds me a bit of a fruit brandy, ripe plums stand out from it. The whole thing is surrounded by slightly tart notes, as well as malt and grain. Clearly spicy notes of oak are also present from the start. Behind this is a slightly phenolic, cooling peat smoke that fits very well into the overall picture. This gives it a slightly maritime character. After a few minutes, the aroma changes significantly and I find caramel, crème brûlée, light roasted aromas of roasted almonds and a hint of marzipan in the background. After the first try, the nose becomes significantly sweeter, which brings a great interplay with the fruits and the bourbon notes.
    • Taste
Significantly sweeter than in the nose with honey and molasses. Plums and citrus fruits are immediately present. Along with a slightly tart mouthfeel, I am reminded of grapefruit. I also find malt and dark chocolate. The alcohol leaves a slight tingle on the tongue and the smoke stays in the background.
    • Finish
The transition to the finish is very fluid. The tart notes eventually turn into a distinct bitterness. The sweetness fades parallel to this and disappears completely towards the end. The oak brings (Christmas) spices and remains in the long finish with notes of liquorice and some menthol.

The second release consists of half smoky and half nonsmoking spirit, which matured in both bourbon (65%) and sherry barrels (35%).
    • Nose

Nutmeg, caramel apples, oranges, cardamom, honey. In the background some salt water and oak.
    • Taste
      85 85
Warming pepper and campfire smoke. Grapefruit, orange peel, pears and peaches.
    • Finish

    • Nose
      87 87
On the nose, honey, oranges, pineapples, a bit of brin, toffee mixed with spices with a hint of vanilla. It feels like being in an orchard by the sea.
    • Taste
      86 86
The palate is very nice. The arrival is dry, sour, from oranges and lemons then it develops into a lot of fruits, apples, peaches, tropical fruits, it is like the after taste of a fruity smoked crème brulée mixed with a bit of crunchy flower of salt.
    • Finish
      86 86
The finish is medium, salty, a little like at the ending of a “Bacalhau” (salted cod fish) triology....

      Blind sample:

      Colour:
      Rich gold

      Nose:
      Uiihhh ... it smells fruity.
The first thing that comes to mind is pear puree sprinkled with nutmeg. In addition, some sugared raisins and a sweetened grain note. In the background a bit of musty wood and a dried berry aroma.
With a little time in the glass, the wood becomes clearer. The fruity recedes and something like moss and a slight note of pils pushes forward. A bit of elderberries and a slightly metallic undertone. The colleague smells bad somehow. The alcohol is very restrained and only subtly noticeable.
    • Taste
Powerful start. This is where the alcohol comes through right away. Go towards the barrel strength. Nougat and mocha. I think the taste is a bit unbalanced and sometimes young. Bitter almonds and more mineral. The metallic is also much more tangible. I also have memories of the forest in my taste. The fruit is difficult to grasp. Rather bitter and immature. There is also a slightly maritime note. And a nice portion of ginger heat.
    • Finish
Rather long. Very young and impetuous. Towards the very end, a dull, engaging taste forms in the entire mouth.

This Whisky is different from others and very very interesting. If I had to describe it with three words, they would be 'floral, incense and heather'. This is what remains in memory if I had to describe this bottle. Now I would just love to know what the first bottling is like.
