Lagavulin 16 is the classic Islay whisky. If the human race was destroyed and I was left alone, this is one I would be drinking?

It offers nearly everything you want in an Islay whisky, peat, complexity, decent age and a unique profile.
    • Nose
      88 88
Sweet tropical fruit, ginger spice, brine, smoke, hot ash, medicine herbs, green vegetables. Full flavour and very well rounded in profile.
    • Taste
      87 87
Liqiurish, soft peat, pine needles, rock salt and TCP oil and charred wood.
    • Finish
      90 90
A big punch of warm peat develops at the back of the mouth, with a long finish more gentle peat.

In the beginning this was a favourite of mine, the current price increase has put me off but still a great malt, very well integrated
malt, smoke, peat, sherry what's not to like, gets better with time
    in the glass.
    • Nose
      88 88
Smoke, carbolic soap, vegetal peat, sherry.
    • Taste
      89 89
Oily, peat, smoke, mint, balanced oak spice, carbolic soap,
      a good warm glow.
    • Finish
      87 87
Med finish, a good warm peat and sherry experience, a good spicy finish.

  4. KB201 did not rate this whisky Connoisseur

The Lagavulin classic is kilned with a high proportion of smoke in the malt. The stills at the distillery are pear-shaped, allowing all of the flavors to be transferred to the condensers during distillation. The single malt then matures to perfection in bourbon and sherry casks.

My favourite, for now (IV. 2021), takes you on a journey!
    • Nose
Smoke, smoke and smoke again, but not overwhelming, you can feel dried fruits, seaweed and a little drop of maritime and delicate citric fruits
    • Taste
Smoke again, powerful, warms you up and goes slowly down the throat, very enjoyable, then lets you taste a bit of mead, oily in character
    • Finish
Very long, smoky, feeling like someone would melt a toffee sweet in the alcohol and covered your gingives in it, a bit fruity and burnt wood stays with you for a long time
