The smoke gives the sweet Rumeinfluss good contra. Pretty sweet in the mouth, but not over it yet.
    • Nose
      84 84
slightly ashy smoke, vanilla, molasses, sweet and sticky, sour, Raffaello, so more creamy and also the slightly roasted of the waffle shell, the sticks a really everything in the nose, after the first sip I have smoldering coal with sweet , almost like a sweet fruit infusion in the sauna
    • Taste
      87 87
oily, full-bodied, very sweet, fruity, light acid again, then the smoke comes as a bitter counterpart, roasted notes, sticky-sweet, grapefruit on the palate, tingling, I like quite well
    • Finish
      85 85
the smoke has largely disappeared, still sweet, yellow overripe fruits, galia melon, some wood on the palate

Not so bad to be frank. Peaty, ashy, sweet, fruity, toffee, thin. Nothing to search in it, however pretty pleasant

In general, not bad. I like the 17 year old much better .....
    • Nose
      Smoky and fruit possibly banana
    • Taste
      Smoke, fruit note and vanilla
    • Finish
      Smoke, sweet, not very long

I was expecting more - mainly rum, so disappointment for me, though, of course, there is no breakthrough ...
    • Nose
Fine peat combined with dried fruit and probably the advertised banana could be found there, heavy floral tones
    • Taste
In taste slightly peat-rounded in combination with soft pepper spice, vanilla, again dried fruit - dates, figs, toasted toast, caramel
    • Finish
In the reverberation of peat, woody, caramel and a little spice on the tip of the tongue - it is quite long but not very intense, rather rounded and cultivated

A whisky, nice and full on the nose, which is being 'killed by the taste.
    • Nose
Very sweet on the nose, like its not even a whisky - very intense rum, pralines, rum essence. A decent aroma.
    • Taste
The taste is not as sweet as nose, rather woody, drier - sweetness is present only with very low intensity. This is a step aside compared to nose and what I expected. Little disappointing.
    • Finish
In line with taste, medium intensity and longevity.

Nose : Oodles and oodles of peat, big peat, very nice stuff from our Speyside friends at BenRiach. Peat is first act here, then comes the Rum artefact, with some sweetness, heather and Demerara sugar. Would i guess this one to be made outside Islay (Blindfolded) – the answer is NO. love the nose here. love it.

Palate : Peat, spices and some eucalyptus on top of it. not Uber Complex, but nice in it’s little way.

Finish : Smokey, bitter coffee, and the spices remain , then mostly vanilla and the eucalyptus shine until the end…. Long end…

Bottom line:A very nice dram, i think i like it almost as much as i liked the Heredetus (Peated and Sherry finished) a few months ago. Kudus to BenRiach for producing all those lovely heavily peated whiskies, and doing it just right! Islay, look out , BenRiach is behind.

Very good stuff, and highly recommended for any Peat-head.

Very simple knitted whisky that did not quite convince me. Almost boring.
    • Nose
A very sweet and smoky aroma with some malt and iodine. A few dark fruits from the rum pot also emerge.
    • Taste
Quite strong smoke and a few bitter notes. Vanilla, eucalyptus and spices are also to be found. Very soft in the taste.
    • Finish
      Long and smoky with eucalyptus.

The BenRiach is quite bright with a greenish sting. In the nose, the smoke is initially there, discreet and unobtrusive, but present. Then a lot of fruit, sweet flavors, pineapple. The taste shows a lot of fruit and the rum comes with it. Above it lies the smoke like a veil. The finish is pleasantly soft and leaves a mixture of fruit sweetness and smoke.
This is a Speyside whisky. You have to say that again and again, because he could well come from Islay. A very nice combination of sweet fruits and smoke.

  18. zinaf scored this whisky 84 points Expert Senior

I am not impressed. It was very interesting experience to try a non Islay peater, but honestly something did not work too well here - could it be the rum cask? Good whisky but nothing to write home about.
    • Nose
Initially starts on tarry smoke, which settles into more light smoke. Some wood. Not much really on the nose. Malted barley.
    • Taste
Nice and smooth mouth-feel. Peat and smoke are predominant. Some odd flavours come through (perhaps from the rum casks).
    • Finish
      Long on peat.

Smell : Mild malt aromas, light peat

Taste : Sweet, peaty and smoky aftertaste

    Colour : Very pale yellow

A beautiful Benriach, simple but tasty. Intense aromas and flavors that capture the essence of classic peat know tackle and complemented by subtle hints and underlying tones.
    • Nose
Intense aromas of peat followed by rum, sweet heather and sugar.
    • Taste
Peat, spices and a hint of eucalyptus. A simple but delicious combination.
    • Finish
A very long finish with smoke, bitter coffee and spice followed by vanilla and eucalyptus

    Arumaticus Fumosus Hunterus Chutnosus.
    • Nose
So here is not a gentle scrutiny of doubt, a lot of sweet peat instantly attacks your olfactory cells, in the second wave a lot of citrus, rum I do not feel there. On the bottom of the glass there is still some iodine. Whoever knows my preferences probably guessed that this could be a good thing.
    • Taste
It tastes a bit luscious, it comes in a rather sparse, I prefer a fuller style, but through this small scratch you feel the smoky veil in the sweet smell, (rum again anywhere and I do not want to take it away). The speech and the touch are unexpectedly strong and distinctive.
    • Finish
Termination of pepper and spicy, without the slightest trace of bitterness. The flavor is as long as the peat pieces are customary.

John Hansell said " It’s missing the more defined fruit notes that the other two have. I’d like to see this at 15 years to give it more depth.

N: Very sweet and peaty, rum, bacon smoke, cane sugar, fresh
T: Rumy sweetness, spicy, fruity, lime, cinnamon, coffee, full, peat, smoke
F: Very long, peat, fruity, rum

  24. CrilleVBG scored this whisky 78 points Expert Senior

This whisky is drinkable, but there is something wrong. Is it the attached smokiness? I don’t know…
    • Nose
A bit musty, earthy and peaty smell. A smoky BenRiach? You cant compare to Islay smoke..
    • Taste
Starts with a decent attack on the taste buds, and then will the peat comes. It taste kind of weird..
    • Finish
Medium long finish, and you feel a little rum flavors..

  25. nijholtm scored this whisky 79 points Expert Senior

In a blind tasting I thought it was an young Ardbeg, a great complement for BenRiach. But not the whisky your wanna buy if you are looking for a fruity Speyside malt.
    • Nose
Grass, with some heather notes. Some peat, not really dominant. Very fruity; lemon, melon, grapes. A lovely nice color.
    • Taste
First some peat followed by floral tones of heather and grass. Also lot's of vanilla and sweet-sour apples.
    • Finish
A little dry and bitter, like an wine with rough terroir. Not overarching and relatively short.

The rum barrels seem to have added nice complexity and diversity to this OB. Still, there remains a good balance between nose and palate. I liked the plastic and cheesy notes, but this is arbitrary. A good dram that offers variation to peat and rum lovers. This would go very well with Gorgonzola.
    • Nose
Undiluted with strong impressions of peat, feints and fruits (in order of dominance). With a few drops of H2O (scotch spring water of course!) some nice cheesy notes come out, together with woody influences (rice pudding, roasted barrel) and again peat (moose) together with cooked fruits (must be the rum). Some feint spiciness, that looks mostly like cloves. Good.
    • Taste
Beside the smoky peat, now some new sweetness (rum cocktails) and an interesting grainy touch (bamboo?). To my liking quite some plastic (yes, burned plastic). Still balance between nose and palate.
    • Finish
The finish is short to medium with a smoky sweetness that one would normally attribute to wine casks. Could be something for Bowmore-style fans.
