The intense sherry aroma dominates from the start, and over time a variety of new and interesting aromas are added. Tobacco, earth, leather, a variety of red, dark grapes and berries, especially juicy sour cherries. Complex, multi-layered, intense and incredibly tasty!

    23/23/22/23 (91P)
    • Nose
Reddish amber shines in the Premium Snifter while juicy sour cherries and dark sweet fruits are noticeable immediately after pouring. Hints of wet tobacco leaves, crumbs of dark chocolate and a handful of sweet raisins plus a hint of sour blackberries and shortbread cookies. I give the malt the opportunity to breathe for a few minutes, in the meantime a multitude of thick and oily "legs" pull their endless paths back into the glass. Sweet tobacco with a minimal smoky note, a touch of earth and malty grain, dark sour cherries and sweet dried fruits, the nose noticeably gains aromas and intensity.
    • Taste
Dark sherry flavors make their way over the tongue with bitter wood tones, a peppery spiciness tickles the tip of the tongue while dark chocolate mixes with creamy hazelnuts. Brine dissolves from spicy wooden elements, sour cherries and currants merge with blackberries and abrasions from dried grapefruit peel, again dark earth tones with a "dirty" touch appear. Wet leaves float creamy and oily under the tongue, fresh herbs and spices appear. The alcohol is wonderfully harmoniously integrated, tobacco and hints of wet leather gradually come to the fore.
    • Finish
Dark, dried fruits stick to the palate with sometimes bitter wood tones, voluminous warmth floods the palate, the mouthfeel becomes noticeably more oily and greasy. In the background there is again this dirty and earthy note ... The interesting and intense aftertaste lingers on the palate for a long time and leaves a smeary film on the tongue.

Nice fat sherry style, but also with noticeable sulphur.
    • Nose
      89 89
Lots of sherry, lots of oak, and the fat Nevis spirit - a trio that can even hold its own against a relatively heavily sulphurized cask. Extremely "dark", oily, greasy and dense. As much as sulfur can often bother me, sometimes it still fits, and this is the case here. It's just fun on the nose.
    • Taste
      80 80
Here the sulfur has a more unpleasant effect and actually covers everything. With water, without water - it hardly makes a difference.
    • Finish
      88 88
Attention, the finish only really comes into its own when undiluted. Then "retronasal" (or whatever the anatomically correct name might be) is followed by a good load of peach.

  5. Islaysmoke scored this whisky 89 points Expert Senior

I can't stand sulfur in whisky and this one comes very close to sulfur so I can enjoy it anyway.
    • Nose
      88 88
The very first smell is almost sulphur, at least matches. Once you get used to it, there is dry fruit and chocolate sweetness with honey spiced with a bit of chili.
    • Taste
      89 89
I've almost got that sulphurousness of matches again. And I find it difficult to taste the other aromas. I also have fruit and chocolate in my mouth. But the whisky doesn't seem out of round.
    • Finish
      89 89
A rather long aftertaste. Some of the sharpness, sweetness and dried fruit are retained.

  6. Lorion scored this whisky 74 points Connoisseur

The whisky leaves me perplexed. I can hardly enjoy it without water, but definitely with water. I would always add water. I only wish I had done it blindly... 74 points total because I can't ignore the undiluted impression.
    • Nose
"An oak-heavy nose with dark fruits. A rotten cherry, a few dried berries. A hint (just a hint) of juniper. A bitter and intense walnut oil is added. I find the whisky to be a bit cooling on the nose, I have to smell carefully.

Water: The nose transforms. The disturbing juniper note disappears, chocolate is added. The oak becomes more pleasant. Aromatic pipe tobacco. The cooling impression is also gone. I like the whisky a lot better that way!"
    • Taste
"Powerful and spicy at the start. Grape skins, the slightly spoiled cherry is back. After a few moments, an unpleasant bitterness forms in the mouth, some juniper here too, as if you had bitten into such a berry. Dark chocolate in the aftertaste.

Water: Unfortunately I miss the transformation that the whisky has gone through on the palate. The intense bitterness is no longer so disturbing, it is more reminiscent of a sour-fruity espresso. Not unpleasant, but the warm chocolaty that has formed in the nose stays away. Nevertheless, water is also worthwhile here."
    • Finish
Medium length, the bitterness of the bitten juniper berry lingers. With water, the finish is pleasantly fruity, chocolaty and warm.

Cherry, toffee, then more cherry skin. Purple grapes plus some citrus peel. Tannin.

    nose
Soft, almost velvety, dark fruits, unobtrusive, very well integrated alcohol. Plum compote, but also very tart and spicy. More tart than sweet. Maple syrup and extremely spicy forest honey, somehow sweet, but very subdued, dark, boiled down and always tart and spicy. Sour cherry! Leather, some cinnamon, cigar smell / tobacco but without smoke (if you smell it without igniting). Wet rotten wood? Dates are slowly added, blackberries and burnt brown sugar.

    taste
Significantly stronger, but still with very well integrated alcohol. Immediately mouth-filling, an explosion of dark sherry flavors. Preserved plums, leather, tobacco, but also red and dark berries, cinnamon and still a nice game between now a little more sweetness and tart-spicy aromas. Spice market, dried fruits and raisins. For me it is still more tart with oak and slightly bitter - the sweetness hides a number behind it. Then again a lot of leather and tobacco, and some wet wood. Blackberries here too.

    Exit
Medium-long and bitter-bitter, now clear sherry flavors and still cinnamon, leather and tobacco. However, it still warms the palate with very well integrated alcohol. The woody-bitter note in the aftertaste is delicious and shows a successful, old sherry barrel maturation.

    Conclusion
A delicious sherry bomb that shows typical Ben Nevis fruitiness for me, but has taken a lot from the barrel. Easy to drink, tasty, complex, appropriate to the age. An enjoyment!

HEAVY rum raisins with cocktail cherries, cocoa powder and pipe tobacco, darkest forest fruits, sweet rotten wood, ash, forest honey, marshmallows and dark chocolate.
    • Taste
      91 91
Sparkling start, the whisky gradually becomes sweeter, again dark fruits and cherries, nuts, woody and tart notes, orange jam, freshly ground spices, minimally sour influences - an entertaining interplay on the tongue.
    • Finish
      89 89
Dark chocolate and oak settle on the tongue, espresso in the aftertaste, long-lasting.

The second Nevis from yesterday's set.
This Nevis, for me, is autumn-winter. In summer you will not drink it)
The first nose is tobacco and leather. Gradually add nuts, cream and autumn fallen leaves.
Taste: aromatic notes became flavored and spices (white pepper and paprika) were added. Tongue pinched well)
The finish is well warming. If you drink dram in volume as a generous Cherkasy, the evening was a success) In addition, you need to drink it near the fireplace and under a blanket in a rocking chair) So you can stick for 2-3 hours)
    22.5 + 22.5 + 22.5 + 22.5 = 90

Immediately dark fruits caress the nose, delicious berries and light acidity, which go in the direction of currants before they are replaced by sour cherries. Then the fruit notes recede and something becomes drier, tobacco and something earthy, moist comes out. Then creamy sweetness (raisins).
    • Taste
      89 89
Somewhat concealed by the nose, the Ben Nevis profile comes through in taste and finish. First a little dry and then a little sweet tobacco and raisins. Followed by gooseberries and currants with a pleasant acidity, which then changes to sour cherries.
    • Finish
      89 89
The finish also starts with sour cherries, then a little dry tobacco, as if the tobacco pipe is about to run out. The dry, slightly fruity mouthfeel lasts for a while. The alcohol is always well integrated and not disturbing, the Ben Nevis does not need any water.

  30. Kegelbogen scored this whisky 90 points Expert Senior

It is very important that the sherry does not overpower the base of the malt. In the case of this Nevis, everything is fine, if this whisky is poured to you blindly, you will recognize in your glass of Nevis. To the opponents of sulfur, I must say that it is here, but after 20 minutes you don't notice it.
    • Nose
The first nose is sulfurous and something swampy. Patience 20 minutes and - dried pear, prunes with raisins, dark chocolate. Further peach blossom, a drop of honey and a pinch of pepper.
    • Taste
The taste is the same chocolate with peach pieces. All the dry fruits that were in the aroma fade into the background and this is really harmonious.
    • Finish
Medium to long. The aftertaste has chocolate, peaches and a sufficient amount of pepper, which warms even more.
