Whisky Reviews for Speyside Region 1973 TWA

21 users have left a review for this whisky and scored it an average of 91.56 points

This Speysider is differentiated compared to the other Speysiders, much more spice and less the fruit bomb both in the nose and on the palate. Perhaps this time a completely different distille? But very complex and long-lasting and cozy warmth! Great!

Nice and fruity on the nose, very old school, but a different profile than the previous Speyside Region 1973 from 2017/2018. Soft, cool, sweet, fruity in the mouth with spicy notes. Mild and the alcohol is very well integrated. The finish is fruity sweet, medium-long, but it sticks to the palate long and fruity, complex and very well balanced.

For me, the profile "Undisclosed Speyside 1973" is strongly influenced by the previous bottlings: fat tropical fruits, juicy, dense body. Especially because of the TWA bottlings. Whoever expects this will unfortunately be disappointed.

This bottling is different but therefore not bad. On the whole, however, too little for the expectation of age, bottler and price.
Compared to other 1973s, however, this one simply cannot keep up.
Compared to a TWA1973 / 2016 Good Vibes. At a price of around € 590, the bottling has to compete with the best.
    2. Comparison against a 1975/2016 Acla.
    • Nose
Somewhat closed at first. Then fruity aromas come through, some orange, lemon, juicy apple, some pineapple.
A slight alcohol note comes through. Already some wood in the nose.
    • Taste
Spicy start, continues to the same aromas as on the nose. Body present, but the fruit only shimmers through. Wood is also noticeable here.
    • Finish
Nice ripe finish, also briefly fruity. If you stay there for a while, then as we get drier we feel a slight bitterness at the very back.

Very citrusy, peppery, slightly floral. It's balanced, slightly harsher on the palate and tasty but it's definitely not the best Speyside 1973 I've tasted.
    • Nose
      91 91
Asian pear, quickly followed lemon zest. Mandarin orange, pineapples, sugar apples, sweet plum. Honey. Followed by strong liquorice and vanilla. Rich blackcurrant buds, ginger lily. Cinnamon, walnut, chestnut, half wet hay, peppery, some ginger. Creamy nuts. Toffee. Damn, Tieguanyin tea leaves from the emptied glass! Such a fruity nosing.
    • Taste
      90 90
Rich fresh orange, honey, richer in 2s, pepper was weak initially, crispy pear, sugar apple, floral. Then started getting waxy, rambutan, longan, green tea w/o sugar.
    • Finish
      90 90
Orange flesh and peel, papaya peel, pear near the seed, fruit stem, vanilla, herbs, tea leaves, mint, slightly peppery. Soft, flavourful and long.

Very spicy licorice, Ricola herbal sweets, no bitterness due to the long barrel storage, the alcohol hardly noticeable (could actually use 1-2% more :-)). If you take a slightly larger sip, almost fruity notes (oranges?) Appear.

Indeed the oldest but also different Speysider 73 so far - not yet a tropical fruit bomb but rather like a fruit liquor, not too sweet, mainly pear and apple and less oomph due to its age, I would probably compare it with the Speysider 1975 Good Vibes from TWA but again less powerful - anyhow, great stuff!
    • Nose
      93 93
Intense william pear, apple, orchard fruits, apple pie, also little green fruits, honeydew, some fresh fruits, hints of vanilla, cookie dough, green banana - very good!
    • Taste
      93 93
Oily, fruity, subtle sweetness, more william pear and orchard fruits, green apple, banana, spices, hints of oak wood, some more green fruits, lime zest, star fruit - great!
    • Finish
      92 92
      Medium long, warm, fruity, spicy

Very nice Speyside 1973 for me.
A sublime fruit, an almost perfect balance and a big dose of chocolate.
You shouldn't look for complexity too much, but the pleasure is immediate.
    • Nose
      93 93
A very intense and fruity nose.
Orange and its zest, passion fruit, banana, sour green apple, apricot, peach, light grapefruit.
Light Turkish delight. All-flower honey, light speculos, salted butter caramel, milk chocolate.
    • Taste
      93 93
On the palate, it is oily and one remains in the continuity of the nose.
The fruit is always splendid, with everything that can cross our imagination.
Mango, papaya, passion fruit, apple, pear, apricot, peach, orange, lemon, bergamot ... a beautiful cocktail.
Milk chocolate, cocoa powder (nesquik), cinnamon, caramel, cookie.
    • Finish
      92 92
Long finish, on milk chocolate, chocolate powder, apple and pear.
Less tropical than the rest of the dram, a little spicy and oaky, but the fruit still remains well on the palate, as does a slight floral touch.

Very fruity, maybe not as tropical as other expressions but really good

  10. Sablescotch scored this whisky 95 points Expert Junior

Just incredible, a dram in absolute balance... on the nose fruity but well-balanced and refined. The palate showcases flavours on so many depths.. a fruit salad, malty, shiitake mushroom stock, clean minerality. The finish goes on for days with only a hint of the wood that it has spent 47 years slumbering in. An absolute treat.

Almost perfect and very tasty whisky to drink, it would still have an aftertaste to match the taste and the price would not have been, and the rating would have been 90+ ...

A copy from the famous secret Speyside 1973. A very similar profile with the maltbarn's spaceside, albeit with an older age (you can't give such an age blindly). But the main difference is in the light perfumery, the perfume based on the flowers comes in the scent. Less in taste, but also present.
