A really great double malt! The marriage of the four barrels clearly shows an effect and makes the ballechin a lot more complex.

fruity on the nose, more spiciness on the palate
Unfortunately, it doesn't suit my taste... the nose is good with surprises and twists, but the taste lacks a lot from the nose; relatively weak finish.
    [81 - 78 = 'ok' whisky -> but do I need a whole bottle?]
    • Nose
      86 86
red fruits of strawberry, currant (this also brings a subtle acidity). Slightly floral touch. Bright fruits are added: apricot, pear, apple, orange.
Fruit sweetness, a little honey sweetness. Light peat smoke in the background, reminds me of charred plastic and some charcoal.
Herbs and spices are hidden at the very back. With time, earthy components also appear; they go into stable manure... kind of strange.
    • Taste
      79 79
quite soft, spicy, fruity. The charred plastic touch comes through again. He tickles something on his tongue, a sign of youth for me.
Tannins stick to the tongue; becoming drier, earthy.
Second sip: thinner than the first sip, more herbs and again spicy; the fruits are pushed somewhat into the background, although the red fruits are there (especially "dry" strawberries).
The herbs dominate more and more; the spices and flavors take over the tongue; again dry, earthy.
    • Finish
      77 77
Overall medium-long to long-lasting, dry, earthy, tannins on the tongue, charred oak (the plastic is a bit delayed, but fortunately it weakens again). Nutty aroma.

    A real "peatbomb"
    • Nose
      85 85
A lot of peat and smoke
    • Taste
      86 86
Very smoky, with also fruit, herbs, with a somewhat bitter tang, and a touch of saltiness
    • Finish
      84 84
Quite long finish, that feels a bit "charred"

How the flavors alternate playfully is great! A little complexity is missing, but this marriage of two different malts is successful.
    • Nose
      87 87
      first smoke, smoke, smoke!
followed by a slight hint of orange, a pleasant sweetness (strawberries).
After the first sip, the smoke moves into the background, the fruity-sweet notes dominate.
    • Taste
      86 86
What a surprise - at first the sherry influence dominates! dry and red fruits, supple and gentle. Followed by a pleasant bitter note and smoke. Even fruitier with a little water.
Pleasantly spicy oak towards the end.
    • Finish
      86 86
medium length, first fruity, then spicy

Good whisky, but probably the weakest Ballechin I’ve had. I say Ballechin because that’s far and away the dominant component here. This is on the medicinal side, even for Ballechin, which I’m not always a huge fan of. That chocolate cake note in there is really nice, and there are some interesting savoury notes in there, but overall it’s a bit too earthy-medicinal-bitter to be a real winner for me.
    • Nose
Peaty and medicinal, but mostly sweet. Fresh-squeezed orange juice and tart gooseberry. Rich barley sugar and chocolate lava cakes. Earthy and band-aid-y peat smoke.
    • Taste
Oily texture. Immediately earthy and peat. Bandaids, woodsmoke, forest cabin. Tomacco! Kalamata olives. Goat cheese covered in dried herbs? Sweeter notes underneath: sticky caramel, plums, and malt.
    • Finish
Medium, bitter and earthy at first but turning sweet. Chocolate orange. Caramel. Peppery herb smoke. A little bit of the sherry cask coming through here.

    Ralfy review 877: (87/100).

"It is an eccentric whisky. Let me state that categorically. And it is not for the fainthearted. And it is fundamental oddity. And in my opinion, all the better for it."

    • Nose
      84 84
Hardly any smoke, strawberry jam with vanilla, after the first sip almost no smoke at all, leather
    • Taste
      82 82
Starts off soft and sweet, dark chocolate. Later there is a salty heat and some smoke
    • Finish
      80 80
      Long. Little smoke, persistently sharp
