  1. detachedblue scored this whisky 91 points Expert Senior

Well balanced and elegant, another classic from SA.
    • Nose
A very "Springbank" like nose, citrus fruits, mineral, light smoke, sweet barley.
    • Taste
Intense, very sweet and perfumy, some elegant oak, ripe apple with blueberries.
    • Finish
Long, sweet and floral, oak spices.

The palate is better than the nose, this is different to modern whisky, lots going on, you need to give this one time

This seems really powerful on the nose , its all on old varnish mixed with grapefruit and a little sugared lemon cake. You then get whiffs of cough candy and a little barley sugar. The thing that detracts a little is a paint note that gives it an industrial sort of angle, a manufactured smell if you like, as if you are in an engineering workshop.

There is some nice fruit and a peat and a lovely sweet sherry note that is full of brown sugar so first impressions are good.
Everything is enveloped in this sweetness, it is a candy sweetness with hints of milk chocolate and a little faint hint of lime , possibly anyway,
      Good balance on show here.

The finish just right, with a nice sweetness and lingering creaminess.

An astingent but complex Glen Elgin from the legendary Italian bottler Silvano Samaroli. Sample courtesy of Mauro.
    • Nose
Starts flowery with heather-honey. Followed with sweetness of pear and yellow apples. Also old books in a library later on. Touch of dusty cedar wood.
    • Taste
Gentle and soft with lots of grapefruit bitterness. Some leafiness. Lemon balm and maltiness as well. Roasted chestnuts. Burnt toast and liquorice.
    • Finish
Medium long. Black pepper. A little ginger. Salty at the end. Well balanced.

    Tasting note by Serge Valentin

Glen Elgin 1971/1985 (50%, Samaroli, White Label w. Distillery drawing, 75cl) Let’s see if this one is a great as the famous 1971 ‘Fragments’ that was to be bottled three years later (91). Colour: white wine. Nose: this smells exactly like when you’re entering a genuine Chinese restaurant – no kidding. A most unusual mix of soft spices and herbs (coriander, green pepper, lovage) and sweet and sour tones (plum sauce, red sauce for dim sum – can’t remember the name, and dried longans). Even roasted duck! Goes on with ham, slightly stale orange juice, blackberries, gingerbread. Slight soapiness. Extremely unusual whisky. Mouth: we’re a little closer to the 1976 now, but with a bigger body. Dried fruits, sweet spices, a little ginger, lemon, a little mint… A little prickly, alas (lemon peel). Hints of coconut liqueur. Finish: long, candied. Crystallised quinces, cinnamon. Comments: bigger than the 1976 but also a little less complex and entertaining in fact. SGP:551 – 86 points.
