Strathisla 2008 GM, bottled in 2020 with 46% from the Distillers Label series. I'm usually not that big of a fan of young whiskys, but I really wanted to try this Strathisla. If only because the "old" ones from earlier times have become so exorbitantly expensive. For just under 70 euros, you can get a rock-solid, 12-year-old Speysider that can convince with its taste profile. Of course, you shouldn't expect a miracle of complexity here. The sweet notes dominate here, the wood and the spice only play second fiddle and only come into their own in the finish. Nevertheless, the 2008 Strathisla is definitely a nice whisky if you want to get to know the legendary distillery for the first time. Of course it is no comparison to the old sherry monsters from the 1960s and 1970s, but for this price you can confidently put this bottle on your shelf. I like it very much and this time I give a fair 89 points and will probably get myself a second bottle. Slaintè!
    • Nose
The color is dark gold and the 2008 Strathisla GM lies powerfully in the nonsing glass. For its 46%, the young Strathisla is surprisingly present in the nose. Powerful vanilla notes appear immediately, accompanied by honey, oranges and lemongrass. Over time, notes of light chocolate and toffee are added. Light grain notes as well as a small hint of ginger heat and herbs form a light aromatic counterbalance to the sweetness.
    • Taste
The nosing continues skillfully on the tongue. The sweet aromas are very present at the beginning, a light fruit basket initially has the upper hand, which is now also complemented by subtle pineapple notes. The wood aromas are now a little more noticeable than on the nose. The ginger is now a little stronger and together with the fine herbal notes it forms a good counterbalance to the sweetness. The 46% drinking strength suits the 2008 Strathisla very well. These carry the aroma load very well.
    • Finish
The finish is warming and medium-long. Here again the sweetness dominates, the mouth becomes a little drier and then wood notes get the upper hand. Now you have the well-known "cigar box" as an association.

In any case, based on the price of 65 €, there is a clear price recommendation!

Citrus, papaya and a hint of ginger fill your nose right at the beginning. Green apple and some paper mache are added quickly.

The nose is light-fruity. Typical Oloroso or PX sherry notes are not recognizable to me. Since it is supposed to be a refillsherry barrel, I am most likely thinking of fino-sherry.

The flavor journey is elegant but not particularly long or complex. The young age is noticeable here. Nevertheless, the nose is very homogeneous and coherent.

The taste is very voluminous and surprisingly fruity right from the start. The overall character is even a bit darker fruity compared to the nose.

In addition to the papaya I already know from the nose, I also have strawberries and remove bananas and fermented pineapples. The impression is rather sweet with light nutty notes (cashew).

The (clearly refill-heavy) sherry expresses the fruit notes nicely. The alcohol is well integrated and is neither stinging nor underrepresented.
    • Finish

The finish is rather short. The fruits disappear quite quickly, mainly the sherry notes remain. Slight bitterness towards the end.
