A rollercoaster of emotions, sometimes very dry and lots of tannins, but I like it! Why? Because the many fruits provide a point of contrast, that makes it interesting for me. I especially liked the celery aromas in this very nice nose and mouth, I don't think I had that in the whiskey yet. This Balcones is a masculine whiskey, like a tart-sweet men's perfume.

I actually did smell rum undiluted for a moment, it's sweet, I can clearly smell cherries, wood, leather, and also something sour. There is also leather, tobacco, oranges and celery!

It's very strong, you can't do it without water. With water I have tobacco, cherries again, tannins, oak, wood and celery again. The mouthfeel is dry.

There's a lot going on here: wood, cherries, sweet apricots, leather and tobacco. Then the tannic dryness turns into an oily feeling. At the end it gets sharper, a chilli sharpness sets in.

A bit woody, a bit sweet, and an overall lovely dram with plenty of typical Balcones character. The wife and I tried this blind the first time and I immediately recognized the distillery when those bright cola notes came through on the nose and on the back end of the palate. While this picked up a load of tannic astringency and structure from the Texas heat, it was not unpleasantly dry and the ex-rum barrels imparted a load of lovely exotic sugars.
    • Nose
Sweet and woody with notes of cinnamon candies, black licorice, cola, and melting Otter Pops. Charred cherry wood, lumber supply store, and resin emerge before sweeter notes of maple syrup and rum raisin cake come into focus.
    • Taste
Medium-bodied and dry with a palpable woody astringency. Sweet black sugar, grassy pandan, dry powdered baking spices, and a hint of sarsaparilla. Sawdust and fizzy cherry cola come to mind as pine resin, wood glue, and sun-bleached lumber come into focus. Ginger and cola come through on the end with a sweet finish.
    • Finish
Lingering dry spices with subtle caramel char.

Fits well into the range of balcones; offers great chocolate flavors. Only I didn't really notice much of the rum cask finish.

This drink is not malt whiskey, more like pure rum. :-(

Fortunately, in the USA they are now also experimenting with different barrels. Whiskey and rum often deliver disappointing results. We cannot say that about these Balcones. Well done!

As a lover of rum, I immediately recognize the sweet scent of sugars, banana, peach, cola, cola sweets. Yes, this is rum, but where's the whiskey?
    • Taste

Full solid dram. Alcohol is very present, perhaps too present. Furthermore, tropical fruit, brown sugar, spicy, ginger and wood. Actually quite a nice taste.
    • Finish
      85 85
Medium dry spicy finish, brown sugar, oak. The rum comes back nicely in the finish.
